"The" is needless before spirit, and its omission is more exact; the idiom "a spirit" admits of close adherence to the Greek.

The last clause illustrates that in Greek the article may be with "faith" if not with "works," where the Revisers properly do not have it in English. Indeed with "works" the witnesses very generally insert it, save a few MSS.
