the city.
Rev. 21:2,10‑27• 2And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of the heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
10And he carried me away in the Spirit, and set me on a great and high mountain, and shewed me the holy city, Jerusalem, coming down out of the heaven from God,
11having the glory of God. Her shining was like a most precious stone, as a crystal-like jasper stone;
12having a great and high wall; having twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and names inscribed, which are those of the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel.
13On the east three gates; and on the north three gates; and on the south three gates; and on the west three gates.
14And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.
15And he that spoke with me had a golden reed as a measure, that he might measure the city, and its gates, and its wall.
16And the city lies four-square, and its length is as much as the breadth. And he measured the city with the reed--twelve thousand stadia: the length and the breadth and height of it are equal.
17And he measured its wall, a hundred and forty-four cubits, a man's measure, that is, the angel's.
18And the building of its wall was jasper; and the city pure gold, like pure glass:
19the foundations of the wall of the city were adorned with every precious stone: the first foundation, jasper; the second, sapphire; the third, chalcedony; the fourth, emerald;
20the fifth, sardonyx; the sixth, sardius; the seventh, chrysolite; the eighth, beryl; the ninth, topaz; the tenth, chrysoprasus; the eleventh, jacinth; the twelfth, amethyst.
21And the twelve gates, twelve pearls; each one of the gates, respectively, was of one pearl; and the street of the city pure gold, as transparent glass.
22And I saw no temple in it; for the Lord God Almighty is its temple, and the Lamb.
23And the city has no need of the sun nor of the moon, that they should shine for it; for the glory of God has enlightened it, and the lamp thereof is the Lamb.
24And the nations shall walk by its light; and the kings of the earth bring their glory to it.
25And its gates shall not be shut at all by day, for night shall not be there.
26And they shall bring the glory and the honour of the nations to it.
27And nothing common, nor that maketh an abomination and a lie, shall at all enter into it; but those only who are written in the book of life of the Lamb.

• We are indeed weak now, but the Lord says, "If you are content to be weak now, I will make you a pillar in the temple of my God." A pillar is the emblem of strength (that which supported the temple) contrasted with weakness. It is a hard thing to be content to be weak. To flesh it is comfortable to feel the world's strength under one. But if willing to appear what we are now, the Lord tells us what He will do for us then: (“Lectures on Revelation 3:7-22: Philadelphia” by W. Kelly)
• So the Philadelphians seem specially those who entered into worship [the temple not the throne is mentioned], because they appreciated the person and character of the Lord Jesus. It is this that draws out the heart. (“Lectures on Revelation 3:7-22: Philadelphia” by W. Kelly)
• He holds fast with a tight and tightening grip Christ’s Word, Name, Patience, and Coming. Life itself may be surrendered, but not the things which constitute the crown of his testimony. The weakness of earth is to be exchanged for the stability of Heaven. “Him will I make a pillar in the temple of My God.” (“Revelation 3: Rewards to the Overcomer” by W. Scott)
• “The temple of My God” refers to the sanctuary above. (“Revelation 3: Rewards to the Overcomer” by W. Scott)
• (1 Kings 7:21). The names of these pillars were Jachin, establish, and Boaz, strength. The allusion in our text is to these pillars. The weak and tried Philadelphian believer, cast out it may be of the orthodox and popular assembly on earth, shall be established and made strong in the eternal blessedness of Heaven. This high position is a fixed and eternal one: “He shall go no more at all out.” (“Revelation 3: Rewards to the Overcomer” by W. Scott)
• “I will write upon him the Name of My God.” The blessedness of knowing God, too, shall be the conqueror’s happy portion. But the tale of grace is not yet finished. The city of My God, the new Jerusalem which has her proper home in Heaven (Rev. 21:9, 10), pours out her wealth of blessedness to crown the overcomer. (“Revelation 3: Rewards to the Overcomer” by W. Scott)
• His new Name indicates His special relationship with the whole scene and sum of heavenly blessedness. (“Revelation 3: Rewards to the Overcomer” by W. Scott)
• How Christ loves to connect us with Himself in the enumeration of these rewards! My God, My Name, etc., occurring five times. (“Revelation 3: Rewards to the Overcomer” by W. Scott)
• A pillar speaks of support, and on pillars inscriptions were made. The overcomer who had but little strength here, and was outside the synagogue of those who said they were Jews, is to be a pillar of strength in the temple of God and go no more out. He is to be descriptive of God, of the city of God, and of Christ Himself. (“Revelation 3” by F.B. Hole)
• Not until we get to chapter 21 shall we find the city of God described, but it is evidently a symbol of the Church as the center of heavenly administration. (“Revelation 3” by F.B. Hole)
• The fourfold repetition of “My God,” in this verse is very striking. God is known to us as “the God of our Lord Jesus Christ,” (1 Peter 1:3) and He is “the Father of glory” (Eph. 1:17). In our verse that glory is in view, and we are associated with Christ, and through Him with God. (“Revelation 3” by F.B. Hole)
• Period—beginning after Philadelphia, but especially the closing scene. (“The Seven Churches of Asia” by A. Miller)
• New Name: Mark of supreme authority. (“Revelation 3 Symbols” by A.H. Burton)
