Three in My Locker

The Rev. F. A. S―. relates of a soldier in the Exeter Hospital who said, when offered a Testament: “Yes, sir, I will take one, but I have already three in my locker,” “Shame on you,” I say; “Why have you not given two of them to two others who do not possess one?” Soldier, believe me, God says: “Love your neighbor as yourself,” and if you love God with all your heart, you will be sure to think of others, and try to benefit them by every means in your power. Do not be ashamed of having a Testament, which is the precious Word of God; do not be ashamed of being seen to read your Testament; don’t hide. it in a locker, but boldly take it out and read it in your bed. God wants you to love Him. It, is almost too wonderful to think of, but it is true. He, the mighty God, wants you to love Him. Mr. Sewell, who used to live in Exeter, tells a true and lovely incident—about a little girl in Sunday school. The teacher asked: “Why did God make man?”— looking, round the class. A little girl replied: “I can tell you, sir. God made the-rocks and those sort of ‘things, but they could not love Him. Then God made the animals, but they could not love Him. Then God made, man, because man could love Him.” “We love Him because He first loved us” (1 John 4:1919We love him, because he first loved us. (1 John 4:19)). And, loving God, we love our neighbor, and seek to save him, body and soul. And, dear soldier friend, ever remember that if you have sought and found the Lord, He promises that you shall want no good thing. God will pardon your sins, justify your person, strengthen your soul, supply all your need, comfort your heart, conquer your foes, sanctify your trials, and give you victory over death., Rest assured, God will withhold no good thing from them that love Him.
