“That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises” (Hebrews 6:12).
Have you ever heard of an animal called a sloth? They live in the tropical rain forests of Central and South America, and are very interesting animals. They sleep a good deal of the time, hanging upside down in trees, and their metabolism is so slow that if they swallow a leaf, they can take a whole month to digest it! When they were first discovered they were thought to be very lazy, and thus were called sloths. However, they are strong animals for their size, and can hang on to a branch for hours. They can easily survive a fall of 100 feet (about 30 meters) from a tree.
The Lord does not want us to be like a sloth. It is easy to become a lazy Christian, and not use our time and energy for the Lord. If we really appreciate what the Lord Jesus has done for us, we will want to spend our time for Him in this world, and use our energy to walk in what He has given us in His Word. We are not left in this world merely to lead good, morally upright lives, and then to go to heaven at the end. Yes, we should be doing all that, but we are also to be living witnesses of the grace that brought us to Christ.
