“I have glorified Thee on the earth: I have finished the work which Thou gavest Me to do” (John 17:4).

Here we have the most precious and intimate prayer in the whole Bible, for it is the Lord Jesus praying to His Father just before He went to the cross. Many of the things mentioned in this prayer have to be felt rather than explained, but here in our verse today the Lord Jesus confidently tells His Father that He had finished the work that the Father had given Him to do.

As to time, the cross was still ahead of the Lord Jesus, but as a divine Person, He could look upon something in the future as if it were already completed. Only God could do that. Also, He was the only One who could say that He had finished the work that was given Him to do. We too have the privilege of serving the Lord, but none of us can say, at the end of our time in this world, that we have finished the work God has given us. As a perfect man, the Lord Jesus did this. What a wonderful example God has given us in His beloved Son!
