“Labor not to be rich: cease from thine own wisdom” (Proverbs 23:4).

“But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts” (1 Timothy 6:9).

I have heard more than one young person in my lifetime, even Christian young people, say, “I would like to have a lot of money!” Some of them have managed to get it, but it has not made them happy. Most people that have riches have spent quite a bit of time and effort to get that money, and then they have to spend even more time keeping it, managing it, and making sure that nothing happens to it. Also, when we begin to have more money, we seem to need more and more to continue to be satisfied. Our human hearts are never satisfied! Solomon (who wrote the book of Proverbs) was a very rich man, perhaps the richest man who ever lived. Yet he tells us not to work to get rich. Tomorrow we will see what he told his hearers to do instead.
