“It is an honor for a man to cease from strife; but every fool rusheth into it” (Proverbs 20:3 JND).
Perhaps 150-200 years ago, it was common for men to fight duels. If one man insulted another, the one who was insulted might challenge the insulter to a duel. Should the insulter refuse to fight, he was regarded as a coward. These duels were serious, for since they fought with pistols, it was not unusual for one man to be killed.
However, it sometimes happened that the one who was insulted would say, “It is not worth fighting about. I can simply let it go.” He might be regarded as a man who would not stand up for himself, but our verse today says that it is an honor to cease from strife. Is it worth another man’s life just to avenge an insult? No, it is not, and the Word of God calls him a fool who rushes into strife just to have revenge.
