Shechaniah.
Elam.
We have trespassed.Shechaniah here speaks in the name of the people, not acknowledging himself culpable; for he is not in the following list.Compare.
yet now there is hope.
Ex. 34:6‑7• 6And the Lord passed by before him, and proclaimed, The Lord, The Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth,
7Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children's children, unto the third and to the fourth generation.

Isa. 55:6‑7• 6Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near:
7Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.
(Isa. 55:6‑7)
;
Jer. 3:12‑13• 12Go and proclaim these words toward the north, and say, Return, thou backsliding Israel, saith the Lord; and I will not cause mine anger to fall upon you: for I am merciful, saith the Lord, and I will not keep anger for ever.
13Only acknowledge thine iniquity, that thou hast transgressed against the Lord thy God, and hast scattered thy ways to the strangers under every green tree, and ye have not obeyed my voice, saith the Lord.
(Jer. 3:12‑13)
;
1 John 1:7‑9• 7But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
8If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
9If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
(1 John 1:7‑9)
 Though Shechaniah says, “we have trespassed against our God, and have taken strange wives” (Ezra 10:2), he spoke on behalf of the people; his name does not appear with those who had to put away their wives. His father, Jehiel, however, could well have been amongst the number (see Ezra 10:26 ). It must have taken great spiritual courage for Shechaniah to take such a stand. (Hope in Israel - Ezra 10:1-4 by N. Simon)
 The Lord uses the faithful zeal of one to arouse others to the sense of their condition. Before the advent of Ezra, the consciences of all seem to have been deadened. (The Book of Ezra: Restoration From Babylon: Ezra 10 by E. Dennett)
