“Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee: rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee” (Proverbs 9:8).

We live in a world where it is increasingly difficult to point out to people that they are wrong. It is sad that most of the time, even if people realize that they are incorrect or at fault, they will defend themselves. This was brought out in an article I read recently, in which the author asked, “When was the last time someone thanked you for showing them that they were wrong?” Yet according to this scripture, only a scorner would get angry under these circumstances. If a wise man has made a mistake, he wants to be corrected, and will be thankful for it. Then, if others have been involved, he will be willing to apologize.

During my lifetime, many godly people have had an influence on me, but those whom I admired and respected the most were those who readily admitted a mistake, and were willing to apologize for it. This did not diminish my respect for them; rather, it made me respect them all the more.
