1. Son of Enos and father of Mahalaleel (Gen. 5:9-149And Enos lived ninety years, and begat Cainan: 10And Enos lived after he begat Cainan eight hundred and fifteen years, and begat sons and daughters: 11And all the days of Enos were nine hundred and five years: and he died. 12And Cainan lived seventy years, and begat Mahalaleel: 13And Cainan lived after he begat Mahalaleel eight hundred and forty years, and begat sons and daughters: 14And all the days of Cainan were nine hundred and ten years: and he died. (Genesis 5:9‑14); Luke 3:3737Which was the son of Mathusala, which was the son of Enoch, which was the son of Jared, which was the son of Maleleel, which was the son of Cainan, (Luke 3:37)). Called KENAN in 1 Chronicles 1:22Kenan, Mahalaleel, Jered, (1 Chronicles 1:2).
2. Son of Arphaxad and father of Sala (Luke 3:3636Which was the son of Cainan, which was the son of Arphaxad, which was the son of Sem, which was the son of Noe, which was the son of Lamech, (Luke 3:36)). This is commonly called the “second” Cainan (because of the earlier one mentioned in Luke 3:3737Which was the son of Mathusala, which was the son of Enoch, which was the son of Jared, which was the son of Maleleel, which was the son of Cainan, (Luke 3:37)) and is remarkable in that it does not occur in the Hebrew, Samaritan Pentateuch, Vulgate, Syriac, nor Arabic texts in Genesis 10:2424And Arphaxad begat Salah; and Salah begat Eber. (Genesis 10:24); Genesis 11:1212And Arphaxad lived five and thirty years, and begat Salah: (Genesis 11:12) and 1 Chronicles 1:1818And Arphaxad begat Shelah, and Shelah begat Eber. (1 Chronicles 1:18); but it is in the LXX, from which it may have found its way into the gospel of Luke, unless, as some suppose, it was added in the later copies of the LXX because of being found in Luke. In the genealogy of Matthew some names are omitted to make up the three times “fourteen”—equaling 6 times 7; so in Luke this name of Cainan may have been added from some list not recorded in the Old Testament, to make 77 names, 11 Times 7.
