He speaks, I apprehend, historically; it was necessary for him to do this by the alleged reason, not his present judgment of divine necessity or purpose. "Has behoved" would speak more of continuance. It behoved him when he became a man. It is what he became as man, not what he took on him.

Some Revisers prefer "become" to "be" a merciful etc. Those who adhere to "be" as in the KJV, do not differ in sense, believing that our Lord only entered on His proper priestly functions when He ascended on high. If He were on earth, He would not even be a priest, there being those who offered the gifts according to the law. His is a heavenly priesthood.

The English versions are various, and none of them exact, yet there is no uncertainty as to the sense; "propitiation" very properly replaces "reconciliation."
