Idolatry; The idolatry into which the Israelites fell, and against which the prophets protested, was of two forms. (1) The worship of heathen idols, with all the immoralities connected with it. (2) The worship of Jehovah by means of images. The causes of the people’s lapse into idolatry were twofold. (1) The seductive fascinations of the free immorality of much of the heathen worship; and (2) the great difficulty of realizing an unseen, spiritual God.
Idolatry. Ex. 20:2; 22:20; 23:132I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. (Exodus 20:2)

; Lev. 26:11Ye shall make you no idols nor graven image, neither rear you up a standing image, neither shall ye set up any image of stone in your land, to bow down unto it: for I am the Lord your God. 7Thou shalt have none other gods before me. (Deuteronomy 5:7)
16Take heed to yourselves, that your heart be not deceived, and ye turn aside, and serve other gods, and worship them; (Deuteronomy 11:16)

15Cursed be the man that maketh any graven or molten image, an abomination unto the Lord, the work of the hands of the craftsman, and putteth it in a secret place. And all the people shall answer and say, Amen. (Deuteronomy 27:15)

Injustice. Ex. 22:21; 23:621Thou shalt neither vex a stranger, nor oppress him: for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt. (Exodus 22:21)
6Thou shalt not wrest the judgment of thy poor in his cause. (Exodus 23:6)
; Lev. 19:1515Ye shall do no unrighteousness in judgment: thou shalt not respect the person of the poor, nor honor the person of the mighty: but in righteousness shalt thou judge thy neighbor. (Leviticus 19:15); Deut. 16:19; 24:1719Thou shalt not wrest judgment; thou shalt not respect persons, neither take a gift: for a gift doth blind the eyes of the wise, and pervert the words of the righteous. (Deuteronomy 16:19)
17Thou shalt not pervert the judgment of the stranger, nor of the fatherless; nor take a widow's raiment to pledge: (Deuteronomy 24:17)
; Job 31:1313If I did despise the cause of my manservant or of my maidservant, when they contended with me; (Job 31:13); Psa. 82:22How long will ye judge unjustly, and accept the persons of the wicked? Selah. (Psalm 82:2); Prov. 22:16; 29:716He that oppresseth the poor to increase his riches, and he that giveth to the rich, shall surely come to want. (Proverbs 22:16)
7The righteous considereth the cause of the poor: but the wicked regardeth not to know it. (Proverbs 29:7)
; Jer. 22:33Thus saith the Lord; Execute ye judgment and righteousness, and deliver the spoiled out of the hand of the oppressor: and do no wrong, do no violence to the stranger, the fatherless, nor the widow, neither shed innocent blood in this place. (Jeremiah 22:3); Luke 16:1010He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much. (Luke 16:10).
Inn; was originally only a plot of ground, near a spring or well, and sometimes secured by a wall or fence, allotted as a camping-ground for the use of travellers. This was the “Inn” of the O.T. (Gen. 42:27; 43:2127And as one of them opened his sack to give his ass provender in the inn, he espied his money; for, behold, it was in his sack's mouth. (Genesis 42:27)
21And it came to pass, when we came to the inn, that we opened our sacks, and, behold, every man's money was in the mouth of his sack, our money in full weight: and we have brought it again in our hand. (Genesis 43:21)
, etc., R.V. lodging place). In later times, some wealthy benefactor would raise the wall, build a few arches, unite them to the wall by a roof, close them with doors, and separate them by partitions, thus providing a separate room for each party; while the cattle were littered in the central open space, or in sheds abutting on the outside wall, or in natural caves around it. This is the modern Khan or caravansary, and such, it is thought, was “the inn” at Bethlehem (Luke 2:77And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. (Luke 2:7)); though the word translated “inn” may simply mean “guestchamber” and is so rendered in Mark 14:1414And wheresoever he shall go in, say ye to the goodman of the house, The Master saith, Where is the guestchamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples? (Mark 14:14); Luke 22:1111And ye shall say unto the goodman of the house, The Master saith unto thee, Where is the guestchamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples? (Luke 22:11).

Integrity. Gen. 20:55Said he not unto me, She is my sister? and she, even she herself said, He is my brother: in the integrity of my heart and innocency of my hands have I done this. (Genesis 20:5); 1 Sam. 12:33Behold, here I am: witness against me before the Lord, and before his anointed: whose ox have I taken? or whose ass have I taken? or whom have I defrauded? whom have I oppressed? or of whose hand have I received any bribe to blind mine eyes therewith? and I will restore it you. (1 Samuel 12:3); 2 Kings 12:15; 22:715Moreover they reckoned not with the men, into whose hand they delivered the money to be bestowed on workmen: for they dealt faithfully. (2 Kings 12:15)
7Howbeit there was no reckoning made with them of the money that was delivered into their hand, because they dealt faithfully. (2 Kings 22:7)
; Job 2:33And the Lord said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? and still he holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause. (Job 2:3); Psa. 7:8; 26:1; 41:12; 78:728The Lord shall judge the people: judge me, O Lord, according to my righteousness, and according to mine integrity that is in me. (Psalm 7:8)

; Prov. 11:3; 19:1; 20:73The integrity of the upright shall guide them: but the perverseness of transgressors shall destroy them. (Proverbs 11:3)

7The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him. (Proverbs 20:7)

Iron; Steel. Gen. 4:2222And Zillah, she also bare Tubal-cain, an instructor of every artificer in brass and iron: and the sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah. (Genesis 4:22); Deut. 8:99A land wherein thou shalt eat bread without scarceness, thou shalt not lack any thing in it; a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills thou mayest dig brass. (Deuteronomy 8:9). Heb. Barzel; Gk. σίδηρος. Iron seems to have come into use after copper, tin and bronze, but in very early times. Steel is iron with a certain amount (0.6 to 2.0 percent) of carbon. “Steel” in A.V. of Jer. 16:1212And ye have done worse than your fathers; for, behold, ye walk every one after the imagination of his evil heart, that they may not hearken unto me: (Jeremiah 16:12), is an erroneous rendering for “brass”; but steel is supposed to be meant by “northern iron” in the same verse; the most famous makers in old times being the Chalybes, near the Black Sea. In Nah. 2:33The shield of his mighty men is made red, the valiant men are in scarlet: the chariots shall be with flaming torches in the day of his preparation, and the fir trees shall be terribly shaken. (Nahum 2:3), “torches,” the translation of pelâdoth (rendered as “steel” both in Arabic and Syriac, and also in R.V.), is conjectured to be an error for “scythes” on the wheels of war-chariots. 2 Sam. 23:77But the man that shall touch them must be fenced with iron and the staff of a spear; and they shall be utterly burned with fire in the same place. (2 Samuel 23:7); Job 28:22Iron is taken out of the earth, and brass is molten out of the stone. (Job 28:2); Prov. 27:1717Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend. (Proverbs 27:17); Isa. 45:22I will go before thee, and make the crooked places straight: I will break in pieces the gates of brass, and cut in sunder the bars of iron: (Isaiah 45:2); Ezek. 27:1212Tarshish was thy merchant by reason of the multitude of all kind of riches; with silver, iron, tin, and lead, they traded in thy fairs. (Ezekiel 27:12); Dan. 2:33,4033His legs of iron, his feet part of iron and part of clay. (Daniel 2:33)
40And the fourth kingdom shall be strong as iron: forasmuch as iron breaketh in pieces and subdueth all things: and as iron that breaketh all these, shall it break in pieces and bruise. (Daniel 2:40)

12And again, Esaias saith, There shall be a root of Jesse, and he that shall rise to reign over the Gentiles; in him shall the Gentiles trust. (Romans 15:12)
