The article here reproduced is by a brother long since departed. It is presented to our readers with the desire of giving help on this subject. Whether one believes that the immersion of believers is the only form of baptism taught in the Scriptures, or whether he believes that heads of houses have the privilege of bringing their households with them on to Christian ground, we believe that both will be edified by a careful and prayerful perusal of this article.
All has not been said on either side that might be said, and if any of our readers wish to write us on this subject in a gracious spirit, with a view to promote unity of mind and heart, we will be glad to hear from them.
“Be perfect, “Be of good comfort, “Be of one mind, “Live in peace;
The following article was published serially in "The Steward" in 1940 and 1941. Since that time we have had a number of requests for it, and so send it forth once again in booklet form. It should be said that this reprint is taken from "The Steward", and there appear to have been several misprints, that have been corrected to the best of our ability, as we had not the original paper.
Perhaps I should add that my Father, John L. Willis, the original editor of The Steward, left me the manuscript for this pamphlet, including the Introduction on the previous page, shortly before he went to be with the Lord. He told me that he had been holding it for some time, and had hesitated to publish it, on account of the controversy there has been on the subject: but he said that as he believed it contained only the Truth of God, we should not shun to declare it, and hoped it might appear in The Steward. I hesitated several years before publishing it: but finally felt my Father was right: and so it was sent forth some seventeen years ago, and is again sent forth in this form, with the earnest prayer that it may not stir up bitterness or controversy: but that the simple, straight-forward exposition of this subject (that is so little understood by many Christians) may be a blessing to the Church of God.
