 He purposely speaks of himself, not as a member of the body of Christ, but as their brother and companion in tribulation (perhaps because, after the church is taken away, there will still be saints on earth and our brethren, John puts himself along with them. The Holy Ghost loves us, whatever specialities of privilege may come in, as much as possible to take our place along with the saints of God at all times. The words "who also am," are an addition contrary to the best authorities. It is a manifest clog to the sense.

The evidence is conflicting as to what follows. "Of Jesus Christ" as in the common text cannot stand; but "in Jesus," though highly supported, is unexampled as to usage, which would seem rather to require "in Christ," or "in Christ Jesus," with excellent authority, and in the latter case very large

"Jesus" is the reading of some of the best MSS., others add "Christ." The vulgar reading "Christ Jesus" cannot resist the weight of the older MSS.
