The Lion

Listen from:
I look on the lion with wonder and fear,
And tremble in awe when his roaring I hear,
And think, if he could but escape from the cage,
He’d tear me in pieces in fierceness and rage.
That great man of valor, called David the king,—
Goliath he slew with a stone and a sling;—
Once fought with and killed both a lion and bear,
To save the poor sheep which were placed in his care.
The battle he won in the strength of the Lord,
A much surer weapon than arrow or sword;
He faithfully fought for the poor little flock,
And stood in the conflict as firm as a rock.
A mightier than David—God’s own blessed Son—
A vict’ry far greater than David’s has won;
He Satan has vanquished, and sin put away,
Delivering sinners, of Satan the prey.
He now lives, the Saviour, in heaven above,
And safe is each soul in the arms of His love;
No lamb of the flock will He ever let go,
But guard it and keep it secure from the foe.
How blessed with Jesus in heaven to be,
From Satan and sorrow and sin ever free,
With none to disturb, to mislead or destroy,
And nothing to check the o’erflowing of joy.
