“That’s a little too close!” said Mrs. Bailey to her husband, as they heard the terrible screech of metal scraping metal. Mr. and Mrs. Bailey were an older couple and today they were on their way home after doing some shopping. While driving towards home, kindly Mr. Bailey noticed a car parked by the side of the road.
Turning to his wife he said, “I wonder if that car and driver are having a difficulty of some kind and could use some help? Please roll down your window and we’ll pull up close and ask.” Sadly, he pulled a little too close to the car and scraped it all the way down. Not only that, he ended up taking off the bumper! There was no one in the car (it was simply a parked car by the side of the road) and they were horrified to hear the scraping all the way down the length of the car, as well as the bumper pulled off, so, in their panic, they just hurried home, pulling the bumper attached
by a wire.
As they entered their driveway, they pushed a button in their car that would put up the garage door. Fearing that surely someone was after them, they put the garage door down as quickly as they could. This, however, left the bumper, still attached to their car by a wire, sitting on the other side of the garage door in their driveway, in plain sight for all to see. Then they entered their home through the garage and just sat in the living room in fear, expecting the police to come and give them a ticket, and perhaps even put them in jail.
Children, I don’t know what the end of the story was for the Baileys. But this story made me think of how there might be one of you who feels really bad about something you did, but you have never told anyone. It bothers you, and you just wish it would go away! Did you know that God knows all about it? Yes, in Psalm 139:22Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off. (Psalm 139:2) it says He even knows our thoughts before we think them! So, do you think we can hide anything from God? If we can’t hide our thoughts, then we know we also cannot hide our actions, can we? Genesis 16:1313And she called the name of the Lord that spake unto her, Thou God seest me: for she said, Have I also here looked after him that seeth me? (Genesis 16:13) says, “Thou God seest me.” Certainly, the God who made you and me sees everything we do and knows every thought we have, just like the Baileys’ big mistake was in plain sight for all who came by to see.
But we have good news! God who sees and knows everything is the very same God who loved you so much, even with all of your sins, that He sent His own Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, into this world to die on the cross for your sins. He died to pay the penalty for our sins, wrong thoughts and anything else that would keep us out of heaven. Why don’t you confess to Him right now that you are a sinner and need Him to save you? He loves you very much and is waiting for you to come to Him. “As many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name” (John 1:1212But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: (John 1:12)).
