Abraham's Seed

This has two meanings (1) PERSONAL, literally Isaac, Gen. 17:1919And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him. (Genesis 17:19), and figuratively Christ, Gal. 3:1616Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ. (Galatians 3:16); (2) GENERAL, meaning “descendants,” it is compared to stars and sand, Gen. 22:1717That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies; (Genesis 22:17). The former refers to Christ’s heavenly people, Christians, Gal. 3:2929And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise. (Galatians 3:29), the latter, to Christ’s earthly people, the Jews, Jer. 33:2323Moreover the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah, saying, (Jeremiah 33:23). Observe it is only the descendants through Isaac that are blessed as Abraham’s seed (Gen. 21:1212And God said unto Abraham, Let it not be grievous in thy sight because of the lad, and because of thy bondwoman; in all that Sarah hath said unto thee, hearken unto her voice; for in Isaac shall thy seed be called. (Genesis 21:12)), so it is only those related to the true Isaac that will receive the blessing, whether they be the stars—the heavenly race, or the sand—the earthly people.
