Jesus was only 12 years old when He said this. His mother Mary scolded Him for staying behind to ask questions in the temple while she and Joseph, His earthly father, had gone on towards home without Him. They hadn’t known He was missing and it frightened them! But they should have known where to look for Him, for He was the Son of God as well as the Son of Mary. He had always been a perfect child, so they should have known He wasn’t doing anything wrong. And He wasn’t! He was doing His Father God’s business, like the perfect child He had always been.
He is our example. If God is our Father, we are glad to do His work, aren’t we? But what does He have for us to do today? You can’t do some of your father’s business for him. How can you do God’s?
If your mom or dad sends you to tell someone something, you are doing your mom’s or dad’s business. God has things He would like you to do for Him today! Ask Him to bring to your mind what they are. Perhaps it is to run somewhere to get something for your mother. Perhaps it is to be kind to your sisters and brothers when they are not in a good mood. Perhaps it is to please others instead of yourself. Do these seem like very small things to do? Then they won’t be hard to do. Try to please God today, and then you will be able to say, “I am trying to be about my Father’s business.” Ask God to help you, because you cannot be good by yourself!
