Whirlwinds of great violence and frequency were well-known desert visitations and gave rise to many Scripture metaphors

(Job 37:9⁹Out of the south cometh the whirlwind: and cold out of the north. (Job 37:9); Isa. 17:13¹³The nations shall rush like the rushing of many waters: but God shall rebuke them, and they shall flee far off, and shall be chased as the chaff of the mountains before the wind, and like a rolling thing before the whirlwind. This is often referred to in the Old Testament as one of the means wielded by God in His judgments on the earth. It is twice connected with the south (Job 37:9⁹Out of the south cometh the whirlwind: and cold out of the north. (Job 37:9); Isa. 21:1¹The burden of the desert of the sea. As whirlwinds in the south pass through; so it cometh from the desert, from a terrible land.
