Psalm 108
The words of this psalm are identical with the latter parts of psalm 57 and 60 except for an occasional word. In those psalms they gave faith’s confidence concerning the outcome expressed in prayers for deliverance from the enemy, at the time oppressing God’s earthly people. The prayers will have been answered, and the redeemed ones are arming for battle against those enemies within the boundaries of the promised land, who were not put to death with the Beast and the False Prophet and their armies, at the appearing of the Lord Jesus (Revelation 19:19-2119And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army. 20And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone. 21And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh. (Revelation 19:19‑21)).
Many passages of Scripture indicate that the establishment of universal peace will be preceded by conflict with certain enemies in and near Palestine: Moab, Edom, Philistia and northeastern nations spoken of as the Assyrian or the King of the north. (Read Psalm 83; Isaiah 10:12; 11:14; 25:10-12,12Wherefore it shall come to pass, that when the Lord hath performed his whole work upon mount Zion and on Jerusalem, I will punish the fruit of the stout heart of the king of Assyria, and the glory of his high looks. (Isaiah 10:12)
14But they shall fly upon the shoulders of the Philistines toward the west; they shall spoil them of the east together: they shall lay their hand upon Edom and Moab; and the children of Ammon shall obey them. (Isaiah 11:14)
10For in this mountain shall the hand of the Lord rest, and Moab shall be trodden down under him, even as straw is trodden down for the dunghill. 11And he shall spread forth his hands in the midst of them, as he that swimmeth spreadeth forth his hands to swim: and he shall bring down their pride together with the spoils of their hands. 12And the fortress of the high fort of thy walls shall he bring down, lay low, and bring to the ground, even to the dust. (Isaiah 25:10‑12) and chapter 34; Ezekiel 25:12-1712Thus saith the Lord God; Because that Edom hath dealt against the house of Judah by taking vengeance, and hath greatly offended, and revenged himself upon them; 13Therefore thus saith the Lord God; I will also stretch out mine hand upon Edom, and will cut off man and beast from it; and I will make it desolate from Teman; and they of Dedan shall fall by the sword. 14And I will lay my vengeance upon Edom by the hand of my people Israel: and they shall do in Edom according to mine anger and according to my fury; and they shall know my vengeance, saith the Lord God. 15Thus saith the Lord God; Because the Philistines have dealt by revenge, and have taken vengeance with a despiteful heart, to destroy it for the old hatred; 16Therefore thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I will stretch out mine hand upon the Philistines, and I will cut off the Cherethims, and destroy the remnant of the sea coast. 17And I will execute great vengeance upon them with furious rebukes; and they shall know that I am the Lord, when I shall lay my vengeance upon them. (Ezekiel 25:12‑17); chapters 35, 38 and 39). Also the prophesy of Obadiah and Micah and other Scriptures, as well as the closing verse of our psalm, from which it is clear that there will be warfare, and that it will be waged by the re-born Israelites, after the Lord’s appearing, and before the reign of peace begins.
He will be first the antitype of David, the man of war; and afterward antitype of Solomon in a reign of peace and displayed glory.
It may be said that the nations of Moab, Edom and the Philistines have disappeared from the lands they occupied in Israel’s day, and are unknown today. It is evident that they will reappear, as will the lost ten tribes of Israel, to be actors in the last days, for God’s Word must stand, and “He requireth that which is past.”
