Charity, (love to our neighbor). Mark 12:3333And to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbor as himself, is more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices. Christ, Date of the Birth of; It is very perplexing to many to find that Jesus was actually born four years before the time from which we count His birth. The simple reason is that no one calculated dates from the birth of Christ till centuries after He was born, and then Dionysius Exiguus, the monk who published the calculations in 526 A.D., made a mistake of four years. He placed the birth of Christ in the year of Rome (A.U.C.) 754. But Herod the Great, who slew the innocents of Bethlehem, died in April of the year of Rome 750, so that Christ must have been born several months before, or not later than the last of 749. The following table will help to make the matter clear:

Jesus was probably born at the very close of 5 B.C., which would be only four years before our era, for in a week after December 25, 5 B.C., it was January, 4 B.C.
Since it is impossible to rectify the dates in all books and records over the world, we simply apply the true dates to the life of Christ. He was five years old at the close of 1 A.D.

Christs, false, and prophets, warnings against. Matt. 7:15; 24:4-5,11,2415Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. (Matthew 7:15)
4And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you. 5For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many. (Matthew 24:4‑5)
11And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many. (Matthew 24:11)
24For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall show great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. (Matthew 24:24)
; Mark 13:2222For false Christs and false prophets shall rise, and shall show signs and wonders, to seduce, if it were possible, even the elect. Chronicles; The First and Second Chronicles form one work in the Hebrew, and are entitled, The Acts or Annals of Use Days, from which our title, “Chronicles” arises. They give a history parallel to that of The Kings, but from a different standpoint.

The Chronology of the Old Testament, as given in the Hebrew text, is represented with much accuracy by the marginal dates inserted in many editions of the Authorized English Version. These dates, reduced to system by Archbishop Ussher (Annales Veteris Testamenti, 1650), were first added to the English Bible by Bishop Lloyd, in the great edition of 1701.
The dates of Archbishop Ussher for this period are convenient for keeping the succession of events, but are not authoritative, as is agreed by the most conservative scholars. They are only one of several possible arrangements. Opinions of chronologers as to the “era of Creation” vary indeed by many centuries.
Ussher: 4004 B.C.
Hales (Sept.): 5411 B.C.
Jewish reckoning: 3760 B.C.
Alexandrian: 5503 B.C.
The question is, in fact, insoluble.

“The sojourning of the children of Israel, which they sojourned in Egypt, was 430 years.” The Sept. says “in Egypt and in the land of Canaan.” That is, the 430 years covers the whole period from Abraham’s entrance into Canaan to the Exodus, with which agrees Paul’s statement in Gal. 3:1717And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect. (Galatians 3:17), that from the covenant with (or call of) Abraham to the giving of the law (less than a year after the Exodus) was 430 years. In Gen. 15:13-1413And he said unto Abram, Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years; 14And also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge: and afterward shall they come out with great substance. (Genesis 15:13‑14), it is said that they should be strangers in a strange land and be afflicted 400 years, nearly the same as Ex. 12:4040Now the sojourning of the children of Israel, who dwelt in Egypt, was four hundred and thirty years. (Exodus 12:40). But, in very truth, the children of Israel were strangers in a strange land from the time that Abraham left his home for the promised land, and during that whole period of 430 years to the Exodus, they were nowhere rulers in the land.
Another reason in favor of this view is the difficulty of arranging any other system of chronology that will agree with the Biblical statements. In 1 Kings 6:1, it is stated that there were 480 years from the Exodus to the building of the Temple.
Starting with 1012 B.C. as the date of the Temple, which cannot be more than a few years out of the way (not more than 37 years according to the Eponym Canon), we obtain the following dates:

Abraham's
call
Jacob comes
into Egypt
Exodus

Temple

←−− 215 years −−→
←−− 215 years −−→
←−−−−−− 480 years −−−−−−→

1921
1706
1491

1012

←−−−−−− 430 years −−−−−−→

If the 430 years were wholly spent in Egypt, the dating would be somewhat in this manner:

Abraham's
call
Jacob's descent
into Egypt
The bondage
Exodus

Temple

←−−−−−− 430 years −−−−−−→
←−−−− 264 years −−−−→

1921
1706

1276

1012

It does not seem probable that the Israelites could have been so long in Egypt.
The present tendency of modern scholarship is to accept the late date of about 1300 B.C. for the Exodus, Rameses II as the Pharaoh of the oppression, and his son Menephtah (Merenptah) as the Pharaoh of the Exodus. Prof. Edward L. Curtis, in Hastings’ Bible Dictionary, says that “the Exodus can in no case be placed earlier than after the reign of Rameses II,” but adds in a note that since that statement was in type (1898), the new inscription of King Merenptah may require the assignment of the Exodus to an earlier period. And Prof. James Orr, in The Expositor for March 1897, argues stoutly for Thothmes and against Rameses.
It is impossible as yet to obtain certainty as to these early dates. Prof. Karl Marti, in Prof. Cheyne’s Encyclopedia Biblica, states that the earliest date certain beyond doubt in the Chronology of the Old Testament is the year 854 B.C., the date of the battle of Karkar, when Ahab was defeated by Shalmaneser II.

The exact chronology is very uncertain during this whole period. There is a wide difference of opinion among scholars, and the latest Bible dictionaries are unwilling to furnish even conjectural dates for most of the events. It seems, therefore, more helpful to the practical study of this period to give the dates in the margins of our Bibles, with the understanding that they are not authoritative, but give the general order and arrangement of events, and are as good as any that can be obtained.

The Period: 332 years (1427-1095)
The period of the judges: According to 1 Kings 6:1, there were 480 years between the Exodus and the commencement of the Temple in the fourth year of Solomon’s reign. Deducting from this the 40 years in the wilderness, 25 years of Joshua in Canaan, and 20 or 40 for Saul’s reign, 40 for David’s reign, and 3 years of Solomon’s reign, the period of the Judges would be 480 – 148 = 332 years (or 480 – 128 = 352 years) including the judgeships of Eli and Samuel up to the beginning of the reign of Saul. Of this about 280 years belong to the book of Judges. But if we add together the numbers given in Judges, they amount fo 410 years. For this and other reasons, it is entirely probable that “the oppressions and deliverances were not successive, but, in part, synchronous. They were, in fact, without exception, local struggles, and it is not only conceivable, but highly probable, that while one part of the land was enjoying security under its judge, other tribes were groaning under the foreign yoke” (Professor Moore). While several of the events were thus occurring at the same time in different parts of the land, in other cases the judges ruled practically over the whole. “The judges formed temporary heads in particular centers, or over particular groups of tribes—Barak in the north of Israel, Gideon in the center, Jephthah on the east of Jordan, Samson in the extreme southwest” (Professor Driver).

Period: 389 or 351 years (975 or 937 -- 586)
Note 1. The data for this period are the explicit chronological statements of Scripture, chiefly in the books of Kings and Chronicles. These assign to each reign its duration, and, after the division of the kingdom, give cross references to the times of the contemporary kings. The difficulty is that the lists of Israel and Judah do not agree. From the accession of Rehoboam to the sixth year of Hezekiah, the year of the destruction of Samaria, 255 years appear to be enumerated in the line of Judah, 241 in that of Israel. Some unknown fact would very possibly place the lists in harmony, and it is probable either (1) that there were in the Israelite line intervals of interregnum, so lengthening the period, or (2) that in the line of David there were times of associated sovereignty—father with son—the years in the annals being counted to both, so shortening the period. The former explanation is generally adopted in the older chronologies, but the latter appears the more satisfactory. There can be little doubt that Jotham, for instance, reigned for several years conjointly with his father Uzziah, who himself had previously been associated with Amaziah. It must be remembered that the Hebrews counted the unfinished years of a reign as complete. Thus a reign beginning a little before the end of one year and ending a little after the close of the next would be reckoned as three years, although hardly more than one. It follows that the same year will be often reckoned twice, as belonging to two different reigns.
Note 2. The dates given in the first column are those arranged by Archbishop Ussher and placed in the margins of our Bibles. They vary but from one to 40 years from the revised chronology, and whichever one we accept as correct, it is necessary to record the Ussher chronology for the sake of comparison. The dates in the revised chronology are those of Hastings’ Bible Dictionary, closely compared with those of Prof. George Adam Smith in his Book of the Twelve Prophets and Prof. Cheyne’s Encyclopedia Biblica.
Note 3. The most important extra-Biblical source of the chronology of this period is found in the Assyrian inscriptions. In 1862 Sir Henry Rawlinson discovered among the records of the stone libraries of Nineveh, on certain slabs, important historical documents, called the Assyrian Eponym Canon, by which we have the Assyrian record of chronology during a large part of the history of the kingdom of Israel.
The Eponyms were annually elected Assyrian officers, like the Roman consuls, and, like them, events were commonly dated by reference to their term of office. An accurate register was kept, with notes of important events and the succession of kings. These constitute the Canon. Its dates harmonize with the Bible in their order and general accuracy, and are exact as to 722 B.C. for the fall of Samaria and 586 B.C. for the destruction of Jerusalem, and are thus a marvelous confirmation of the Bible. But in details the Assyrian dates vary from those Ussher has derived from the Bible numbers, from seven to 40 years. The records are complete from 897 to 666 B.C., as well as for shorter periods before and after. There are several copies, all of which closely agree. They contain notices of the succession of kings and the most important events in their respective years. From the mention of the total eclipse in 763 is determined the date of all the remaining years. The persons and events in next to the last column of the preceding table are mentioned in the Eponym Canon.
Note 4. The dates in the last column of the above table are from the remarkable astronomical calculations of the astronomer Mahler, based on the Biblical notices of such possible events, taken from the Encyclopedia Biblica.

Jesus with Nicodemus, John 3.
with the woman of Samaria, John 4:7-277There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink. 8(For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.) 9Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans. 10Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water. 11The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water? 12Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle? 13Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: 14But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life. 15The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw. 16Jesus saith unto her, Go, call thy husband, and come hither. 17The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said, I have no husband: 18For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly. 19The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet. 20Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship. 21Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father. 22Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews. 23But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. 24God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. 25The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things. 26Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he. 27And upon this came his disciples, and marvelled that he talked with the woman: yet no man said, What seekest thou? or, Why talkest thou with her?
