Temptation
PRO 4:23
Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.
Prov. 4:23
God gave us the gift of our minds, and our bodies, as well as the ability to love, to marry. Scripture never promises that avoiding temptation is easy, only worthwhile. Keeping our hearts and lives pure may be a struggle, but with God’s help it is possible. Few decisions are as important to your future happiness as this one regarding purity. Don’t give up!
Faithfulness
1SA 3:1
And the child Samuel ministered unto the LORD . . . . And the word of the LORD was precious in those days; there was no open vision.
1 Sam. 3:1
Samuel lived in a day of small things . . . not much of the Lord’s word and not many visions. Yet Samuel was faithful. If our faithfulness is based on the conditions around us, rather than on our relationship with the Lord, it will be just like the conditions around us (SMALL).
Discouragement
NUM 20:2-3
And there was no water for the congregation.... And the people chode [contended] with Moses.
Num. 20:2,3
Are you finding the meeting and fellowship where you are dry and unsatisfying? How’s your relationship with the Lord? Maybe you’re not speaking to Him enough and not enjoying His fellowship. Get close to the ROCK. We are sometimes the cause of the dryness.
Mind Control
2CO 10:5
Bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.
2 Cor. 10:5
Here’s something that I find very difficult. Stopping our wandering thoughts to steer them in scriptural directions requires diligence. How our minds race away with unprofitable thoughts. Today let’s try stopping our thoughts when they go off at an angle and get them to circle back to the “theme of our song” - JESUS.
Fruit Bearing
GAL 5:22-23
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
Gal. 5:22, 23
How wonderful when these nine fruits are seen daily in us! Sometimes you might think there was a law against these wonderful attributes for they can be scarce commodities. The Lord demonstrated all these - all the time - consistently. They have to be in us first before they can be seen by others.
Worship
GEN 17:1-3
I am the Almighty God.... And Abram fell on his face and God talked with him.
Gen. 17:1, 3
A statement like “I am the Almighty God!” would make us fall on our faces too - probably in fear. But as a child of God I fall in worship at the feet of the One who not only made me, but gave His Son, punished Him for my sins, and then saved me from a lost eternity. Does this touch your heart? Do you feel like falling on your face before Him in worship? You should.
Service
MAT 6:24
No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon [money].
Matt. 6:24
Once a story was told, the truth of which cannot be verified, about a man who lived right on the border of the North and South during the Civil War. Not wanting to take sides he wore a Union shirt and a Confederate pair of pants. He didn't fare very well! Humor aside, you may feel you can have the best of both worlds - serving Christ and getting rich. But it will lead to a cold heart. Having money is not the problem, wanting it is. Be careful.
Purity
1JO 3:3
Every man that hath this hope in Him purifieth himself, even as He is pure.
1 John 3:3
One of the greatest deterrents to impurity is the expectation of the sudden return of the Lord Jesus. “What were you doing when the Lord came?” is a question that may well be asked on the streets of heaven. If He comes today, what will your reply be to those who ask?
Kindness
DEU 22:1
Thou shalt not see thy brother's ox or his sheep go astray, and hide thyself from them.
Deut. 22:1
We live in a society that is so busy that they find it difficult to take time or exert the energy to help one another. This should be a real challenge to each of us. Am I too busy to care about someone else who may need help? Let’s try today to do a kindness for someone. It’s a motto for boy scouts. It should be a way of life for a Christian.
Fellowship
REV 3:20
Behold, I stand at the door, and knock.
Rev. 3:20
Open up! You’ve been busy this week with school, and sports, and homework, and . . . and the Lord had to take second place. He longs for your company. Nothing pleases Him more than fellowship with His own. Enjoy a time with Him today. Open up to His knocking!
Genuineness
1SA 16:7
The LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.
1 Sam. 16:7
The story is told about the “Queen Mary”, a ship now docked in Long Beach, Ca. During renovation, the giant smokestacks were taken down for refinishing. To the surprise of the workers, most of the metal had rusted away, leaving smokestacks mostly made of thick layers of paint! Don’t fall into the trap of just looking good on the outside. The “inside” matters most.
Reaping
DEU 22:9
Thou shalt not sow thy vineyard with divers seeds: lest the fruit of thy seed which thou hast sown, and the fruit of thy vineyard, be defiled.
Deut. 22:9
I’m sure we all want to reap the best that we can. There’s only one way to get this and that is to sow the best that we can. And this involves dedicated service to the Lord alone. Look back to last Monday’s comments. “No man can serve two masters.” Neither can you sow to your lusts and to the Lord and expect a good harvest. Remember - you reap what you sow.
Praise
PSA 40:3
And He hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God.
Psa. 40:3
In Exodus 15 Moses and the children of Israel sang this song unto the Lord: “I will sing unto the Lord, for He hath triumphed gloriously: the horse and his rider hath He thrown into the sea. The Lord is my strength and song, and He has become my salvation.” When we’re saved we have something to sing about. Let’s sing then!
Service
LUK 9:13-17
We have no more but five loaves and two fishes . . . . Then He took the five loaves and two fishes . . . . And they did eat, and were filled.
Luke 9:13, 17
All too often we excuse ourselves from service thinking that we have no ability or have no gift. This is a great cop-out. Are we trying to tell the Lord that He is limited by our inability? Whatever He asks you to do, do it. Five loaves and two fishes can fill a multitude in His hands.
Salvation
2CO 8:9
Our Lord Jesus Christ . . . became poor, that ye through His poverty might be rich.
2 Cor. 8:9
What immense love! He gave up everything. He chose to take a low place, even one of poverty. For what purpose? That we might be rich. Eternally rich, that is. Have you received and are you enjoying those riches that can never fade away?
Confession
1JO 2:1
If any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.
1 John 2:1
If you belong to Jesus but don't have peace in your soul, it may be because (1) you haven't confessed some sin to Him, or (2) you have confessed, but deep down you feel you haven't been forgiven or that God must be upset with you. 1 John 2:1 is one of many verses that should assure us of God's forgiveness and love. Remember, we have One who is our “advocate”, One who speaks to the Father in our defense, Jesus Christ the righteous.
Wisdom
PRO 4:7
Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.
Prov. 4:7
Daniel had understanding of the times, but we need wisdom to know what to do. Today the experts understand the problems and can tell you in great detail why there is poverty, disease, overcrowding, pollution, etc. Unfortunately very few have good solutions. Only the Lord can show us what to do - we get our wisdom from Him by asking for it. Have you asked today?
Discouragement
NUM 21:4
And the soul of the people was much discouraged because of the way.
Num. 21:4
We have not been promised that the Christian path will be without trouble. We need to remember that. Discouragement will come. Trials will seem impossible to bear. But will the LOVE that took Jesus to the cross ever forget or forsake us in the way? He has promised to be with us always - even unto the end of the age.
Praise
PSA 92:1
It is a good thing to give thanks unto the LORD, and to sing praises unto Thy name, O most High.
Psa. 92:1
Nothing pleases God better than our thanks and praise. He expects it and looks for it. We should be willing to give it. He has done everything for our good. He gave His Son for us. He gave the faith needed to believe the gospel. He cares for us each day. Certainly then it is a good thing for us to give thanks unto the Lord. Have you thanked Him today?
Worship
LUK 24:50-52
He led them out as far as to Bethany.... He blessed them... and they worshipped Him and returned... with great joy.
Luke 24:50-52
God Himself walked the dusty road of this world. His hands touched the leper and healed him. He raised the dead. And He lifted up His hands and blessed His followers as He was parted from them. No wonder they worshipped Him - their Lord! See Him today with His hands lifted up in blessing towards you - and you will worship too.
Service
JOH 15:5
He that abideth in Me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit; for without Me ye can do nothing.
John 15:5
Last spring some tomato seeds were planted in my garden. Soon they sprouted and grew into healthy plants but there were no tomatoes on the plants. All around the garden are large shade trees. When the trees started to lose their leaves the tomatoes started to develop. They were needing sunshine. We too need the personal touch of the Lord Jesus in order to be fruitful. Are you like my tomatoes?
Excuses
PRO 22:13
The slothful man saith, There is a lion without, I shall be slain in the streets.
Prov. 22:13
How often there seem to be genuine obstacles in the way of what we would like to accomplish. Those who give up immediately never know what it is to see the Lord remove the problem. He wants us to trust Him only. We cannot slay the lion in the street except with the Lord’s help. Sometimes there appear to be some pretty good excuses - but is the Lord testing our faith?
Giving
2CO 9:7
Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give.
2 Cor. 9:7
The poor widow in the gospels had a decision to make. She had only two coins left. She could either keep both, keep one and give one, or give both. She gave both. She had nothing left. How about you?
Prayer
MAR 1:35
Rising up a great while before day, He [Jesus] went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed.
Mark 1:35
Have you ever struggled with getting up early to read your Bible or to pray? This can be difficult, especially for those of us who are not exactly “morning persons.” Consistency in prayer is even more important than what time it is when you pray.
Reading
PSA 119:9
Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed thereto according to Thy word.
Psa. 119:9
Do you sometimes read a chapter from the Bible and feel like you’re not getting anything out of it? Don’t get discouraged! Keep reading! The Word of God has a cleansing effect on your life. If you take a dirty funnel and pour water through it, the funnel won’t hold much water, but the water will clean the funnel. Keep “pouring in” the Word of God!
Encouragement
HEB 12:12-13
Lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees; and make straight paths for your feet.
Heb. 12:12,13
The best way to encourage others to go on for the Lord is to go on for the Lord yourself. If your hands are strengthened in service for the Lord, your knees bent in fervent prayer, and your walk pleasing to the Lord, you will be able to help other Christians who are weak and struggling. You will stir them up to follow the Lord too!
Worship
1CO 11:24
And when He had given thanks, He brake it, and said, Take, eat; this is My body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of Me.
1 Cor. 11:24
Have you ever wondered what appreciation a person must feel towards another when the other person has just saved his life? Sometimes a rescuer gives his life in saving the other person. How’s your gratitude to the Lord for saving your soul? Let’s take time today to thank Him for what He has done. And don’t forget His request to remember Him in His death.
Service
ROM 12:1
Present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
Rom. 12:1
When we are young we are fed and clothed by our parents and in turn we help out in the household chores. Now, because the Lord has gone all the way to Calvary’s cross to save us, we have a responsibility to help Him out by service - willing to do anything He asks us to.
Obedience
GEN 12:1-4
Get thee out . . . . So Abram departed.
Gen. 12:1,4
Unquestioning obedience. Abraham always responded positively when the Lord spoke to Him. He had complete trust in God’s word and willingly obeyed His instructions, even though he may not have understood the reasons for God’s requests. How is your response when the Lord speaks?
Debt
PRO 22:7
The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.
Prov. 22:7
It is very tempting to borrow money to buy the things you want today. But remember that it has to be paid back and sometimes at high interest rates. When you owe money that you cannot pay, it becomes tempting to borrow more. Be careful not to become a slave. Ask the Lord for guidance and help.
Time
COL 4:5
Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time.
Col. 4:5
“Redeeming” gives the sense of “making the most of.” Supposedly in our lifetime we spend 2 months listening to telephone busy signals, 6 months waiting at red lights, and 8 months reading “junk mail”. Of course, we need rest. We'd soon burn out without some relaxation. Many legitimate commitments use up time. Let's add one more commitment - to budget as much of our time as we can to Jesus. Doesn't He deserve it?
Sin
PSA 119:11
Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against Thee.
Psa. 119:11
Are you struggling with sin in your life? Are there bad habits and temptations you can’t seem to conquer? How much time do you spend reading your Bible? A daily diet of God’s Word brings blessing to the Christian. Neglecting it spells disaster. Martin Luther once said, “This Book will keep me from sin, or sin will keep me from this Book.”
Prayer
DAN 6:10
Daniel . . . kneeled upon his knees . . .  and prayed, and gave thanks before his God.
Dan. 6:10
Reverence is shown here. He kneeled. He showed dependence - he prayed. He showed a thankful heart - he gave thanks. Daniel is a great example for us to follow.
Worship
PSA 8:1
O LORD our Lord, how excellent is Thy name in all the earth! who hast set Thy glory above the heavens.
Psa. 8:1
Have you ever tried to imagine just how wonderful and magnificent God is? The vastness of the heavens is nothing compared to the kindness and love He has shown. Then just think that through His Son Jesus Christ God even desires a personal relationship with you. Let’s give Him our attention today more than ever before, with sincere praise and worship.
Service
2KI 5:1-9
Now Naaman... was a leper.... Would God my lord were with the prophet... for he would recover him of his leprosy.
2 Kings 5:1-9
What is service anyway? Does it mean that I must be in a prominent place? No! In our verses today we read of a little maid. She spoke a little word by faith, and great blessing resulted. Right where you are, whoever you are with, be available to God.
Overcoming
1JO 5:4
This is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.
1 John 5:4
Faith is more than what is needed to believe the gospel. It’s needed in our daily battles against the world. Are the attractions of the world, the glamour, and the fame in the world pulling you away from the Lord? Let your faith take hold. It has a magnetic attraction to Christ. Let it pull you towards Him and so overcome the world.
Your Heart
PRO 23:26
My son, give me thine heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways.
Prov. 23:26
How often we want to give our heart to having fun, or getting better at sports, or improving our education. The Lord wants our heart more than anything. Where will you permit your affection to rest? On the One who loved you and gave Himself for you, or on the things that last only for a short time?
Walk
PRO 4:14-15
Enter not into the path of the wicked . . . avoid it, pass not by it, turn from it, and pass away.
Prov. 4:14, 15
Recently, while visiting friends, we had a friendly game of touch football. The father of the other family was running full speed with the ball when he realized (too late) that his youngest daughter was in his path. He tried to avoid her by leaping over her. He missed and both ended up on the ground, his daughter with a headache. Often direction of travel is hard to change. That's why we are warned to avoid the wrong direction in the first place.
Compromise
DAN 1:8
Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat.
Dan. 1:8
Daniel and his three friends were never told to give up their belief in God, only to compromise it. The same pressure is on the Christian today. Satan knows he can’t take away your salvation, but he wants you to compromise your Christianity. The world and Satan say, “CONFORM!” God says, “BE TRANSFORMED!” Don’t compromise! Stand up and be counted for Christ today!
Envy
1CO 13:4
Charity envieth not.
1 Cor. 13:4
Perhaps you know someone that is never satisfied. They are always being eaten up with the desire for what someone else has. (Maybe this is you!) And when they can’t get what they want they become bitter and jealous toward the other person. Envy will consume you. True Christian love will rejoice with and for others. It will never envy them.
Worship
JOH 19:16
Then delivered he Him therefore unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led Him away.
John 19:16
Often we hear accounts of close family members offering their lives in love to save a child or other relative. Love supersedes any consideration of danger in some cases. Because of love, Jesus died for those who hated him. Could we love someone even as they were attempting to kill us? Remember His love for you. “Himself He could not save/ Love's stream too deeply flowed/ In love Himself He gave/ To pay the debt we owed.”
Service
ACT 8:26
And the angel of the Lord spake unto Philip, saying, Arise, and go toward the south, unto the way . . .  which is desert.
Acts 8:26
What a situation. Philip is in the middle of a great revival in Samaria. There's rejoicing throughout the city, and many are being saved. Then God says to go to the desert. Why? Because God is interested in individuals. And an Ethiopian was ready to receive the gospel. Yes, in a desert place. Maybe you feel that you are in a desert place where there is nothing for you to do. God does have something for you to do. Lift up your eyes. The fields are white unto harvest.
Prayer
2KI 20:5
I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears.
2 Kings 20:5
The Lord hears a prayer. He wants us to come to Him in prayer and lay our hearts bare before Him. He takes note of our tears. A contrite (repentant) spirit He will not despise. Talk to Him today. He’s listening.
Tears
PSA 56:8
Put thou my tears into thy bottle.
Psa. 56:8
Has someone hurt you - caused you tears? The Lord sees and sympathizes with you. Have you shed tears in thinking or talking about the Lord’s mistreatment at the cross? He sees those tears too. He keeps track of them. Never be ashamed of shedding tears over the Savior. That’s your love for Him showing out.
Generosity
PRO 22:9
He that hath a bountiful eye shall be blessed; for he giveth of his bread to the poor.
Prov. 22:9
A miser does not possess gold - he is possessed by it! The Lord Jesus has freely given us all things. What a challenge to do the same to others! If we are mean with others when we should be generous it will shrivel our soul. Money is made round to go round. Remember that he who gives to the poor lends to the Lord.
Gospel
EPH 2:12
That at that time ye were without Christ... having no hope, and with-out God in the world.
Eph. 2:12
Did you know that every 90 minutes a young person commits suicide, and every day more than 1,000 attempt it? We are living in a world where many young people are filled with hopelessness and despair. We were once without Christ, but now we have the answer! You can show someone the way of salvation and the joy that comes from trusting Him. Think of someone whom you can pray for and reach out to today!
Encouragement
LUK 24:15
Jesus Himself drew near, and went with them.
Luke 24:15
When the two were on the way to Emmaus, Jesus Himself drew near and talked with them. What He said had such an effect that they turned around and went back to Jerusalem. They said, “Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us by the way.” When you feel discouraged do you let Jesus Himself draw near? He will warm your heart and you will be encouraged to go on.
Worship
GEN 22:5
Abraham said . . . I and the lad will go yonder and worship.
Gen. 22:5
Abraham had been told of God to go to a certain place and offer Isaac for an offering - the ultimate sacrifice that a father could make. Abraham arrives at the place where he will leave his servants and “go yonder and worship.” What a tremendous attitude to have - one of rendering honor to God because of what He meant to him. What does the Lord mean to you? Are you ready to worship Him today?
Evangelism
MAR 6:34
And Jesus . . . saw much people, and was moved with compassion toward them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd: and He began to teach them.
Mark 6:34
A writer once said that evangelism involves letting someone open the pages of your life and read the fine print. We often sing, “No one ever cared for me like Jesus.” It's obvious that those who were around Jesus when He was here must have realized that He cared. The fine print of His perfect life had “I love you” on every page. When you and I rub shoulders with the lost souls of this world, what message do we give them to read?
Truth
PRO 12:22
Lying lips are abomination to the Lord: but they that deal truly are His delight.
Prov. 12:22
The Lord hates lies. Yet lying is becoming a way of life. If you tell enough lies eventually no one will believe anything you say - ever! Make a special effort to be truthful in everything you say, particularly with your friends. When you tell others about your relationship with the Lord they will believe you.
Sympathy
PRO 24:17
Rejoice not when thine enemy falleth, and let not thine heart be glad when he stumbleth.
Prov. 24:17
Most people laugh when they see the misfortunes of others. Slapstick humor is based on this premise. The world thinks nothing of laughing when things go wrong for others. God allows calamities for a purpose. When your friends have problems, pray for them and for an opportunity to help them. If you do this you will have opportunities to tell out the gospel and people will listen.
Overcoming
REV 2:17
To him that overcometh...
Rev. 2:17
In each of the seven churches that are written to in Revelation there was an overcomer. It is easy for us to be “overcome” by the problems we have in our personal lives, our homes, our jobs, and our assemblies. But why be “overcome” when with the Lord’s help we can be overcomers! Even today God has a special reward for those who go on for Him in a time of trouble. Be an overcomer!
Rest
MAT 11:28
Come unto Me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Matt. 11:28
Listen to these words of Jesus spoken in love and compassion. This day may bring trials and temptations that are beyond you, and burdens that are very heavy to bear. In Jesus you have a source of relief and strength that the world cannot provide. Only in Him can you find real rest.
Humility
1PE 5:5
Be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.
1 Pet. 5:5
Sometimes we have a distorted view of what humility really is. The Lord displayed the attitude of a servant, but He never “downed” Himself. Humility is certainly “lack of pride” but it also involves giving God the credit for any talents that we may have. You wouldn't like it if your dentist said that he was the worst there is, or your airline pilot indicated that he wasn't very good. If you have an ability in a certain area, simply thank God for it and use the gift with all your might.
Worship
JOH 12:3
Then Mary took a pound of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped His feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odor of the ointment.
John 12:3
Don’t you get the impression from this verse that Jesus meant a great deal to Mary? Appreciation for Him filled her heart just as the sweet odor filled the house. If you know the Lord as your personal Savior then you know that He has given you very much. Worship is adoration and love you can give back to Him. Mary’s gift was expensive. Doesn’t the Lord deserve your best?
Service
PHI 2:5-7
Jesus . . . made Himself of no reputation, and took on Him the form of a servant.
Phil. 2:5, 7
What kind of reputation does a servant have? At best he is known by how well he pleases his master. Does my life bear any resemblance to that of a servant? Mark 10:44 tells us that, “Whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all.” The perfect Servant came not to be served, but to serve. Let us learn how to serve and be like Jesus today.
Rules
GEN 2:17
Of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.
Gen. 2:17
Specific instructions must always be obeyed. We have no choice. “Be home by six o’clock,” observe the rules of baseball, etc. There is always punishment for breaking rules. Where we have a choice and there are no rules, regulations or specific instructions, then we must use Scriptural principles to guide us, with the Lord’s help. It’s not easy!
Forgiveness
LUK 15:20
But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.
Luke 15:20
The story of the prodigal son is one of the most touching examples of love and forgiveness found in the Bible. What if God's love toward us depended on our worthiness? Or what if He only forgave those who are “lovable”? You may know someone whom you can't forgive, maybe for what seems a good reason. Think it over and consider this: forgiving pleases God, and is crucial to enjoying happy, close fellowship with the Lord.
Walk
PSA 27:11
Teach me Thy way, O Lord, and lead me in a plain path, because of mine enemies.
Psa. 27:11
A Christian brother, as a result of age, has been losing his eyesight. It's not easy for him now, especially getting used to the idea of having someone else lead him around. He realizes, however, that being helped in this way spares him many problems. Jesus has extended His hand, and would like for you to trust Him as your guide. “Each step I take, my Savior goes before me And with His loving hand He leads the way.”
Idolatry
1CO 10:14
Flee from idolatry.
1 Cor. 10:14
Idolatry? Of course you’re surprised! But anything that comes between you and the Lord can become an idol. Be careful of what you allow to dominate your life. Even people in your circle of fellowship can become an idol. We can, by our attitude, become idol worshippers. Let’s make a real effort to make the Lord the center of our life.
Faithfulness
COL 4:9
Onesimus, a faithful and beloved brother.
Col. 4:9
Can you put your name in the place of Onesimus? It’s a real thrill to see younger brothers and sisters who are really trying to live for the Lord. Let’s try today to be faithful and the kind of person that others can call “beloved.”
Worship
GEN 22:5
Abraham said  .  .  .  I and the lad will go yonder and worship.
Gen. 22:5
The worship of God has been described as the honor and adoration rendered to God because of what He is in Himself, and what He is to those that render it. Today is a very special day in a Christian’s life - because of Calvary. God’s love is shown out there as no place else. Let’s worship Him in sincerity today.
Service
1KI 8:18
Whereas it was in thine heart to build a house unto My name, thou didst well that it was in thine heart.
1 Kings 8:18
David is commended by the Lord for even having the desire of heart to do a service for God even though he wasn’t chosen to do it. This should be a real encouragement for you - to have the heart’s desire means something to the Lord. He may use you in that service. Again, He may not. But be assured - the thought pleases Him.
Drinking
PRO 20:1
Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.
Prov. 20:1
Alcoholism among young people has increased 800 percent in the last 10 years and by the end of high school one in ten students will suffer from a serious drinking problem. The Bible has many warnings for us about drinking alcohol. So don’t let anyone or anything fool you. God warns us because He has our good at heart.
Peace
PRO 1:33
But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil.
Prov. 1:33
Have you ever worried about the future or at least what kind of world your future would be in? The great hurricane and earthquake of 1989 reminded us all that life presents no guarantees for safety. But many Christians endured these or similar catastrophes and spoke about the deep serenity and peace that they felt during the “storm”. If you know Christ as your Savior you have every reason to trust and enjoy His peace.
Helping
DEU 22:3
Thou shalt not see thy brother’s ass or his ox fall down by the way, and hide thyself from them: thou shalt surely help him to lift them up again.
Deut. 22:3
Would you like to be more like the Lord Jesus? I’m sure you answered, “Yes!” Remember that when He was here He always helped those in need, and showed kindness wherever He went. You can do the same. Simply by helping others you can be like Christ.
Fornication
1CO 6:18Flee fornication.
1 Cor. 6:18
Why is fornication so warned against in the Scriptures? First, because it is a sin against your own body. Second, because in spiritual type it represents idolatry which is most hated by the Lord. Fornication will destroy the perfect union in a marriage. Idolatry destroys the perfect union between the Lord and His bride. At all costs keep yourself from fornication.
Trust
PRO 3:5
Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
Prov. 3:5
A few days ago in an Ohio town a woman found herself trapped with her baby on the second floor of a burning house. Looking out the window to the pavement below she was paralyzed with fear. An 11-year-old boy ran to the house and urged her to drop the baby to him. With the heat closing in behind her she let the baby go - safely into his arms. The Lord wants you to trust Him too - in everything.
Worship
1JO 1:
But thou shalt remember that thou wast a bondman in Egypt, and the Lord thy God redeemed thee thence.
Deut. 24:18
Today is a day to remember. We can remember what we were before the Lord saved us and thank Him for what He has brought us into. But along with our remembering we must consider what it cost the Lord to bring us into the blessings that we have. It cost Him everything. That should make us bow in worship to think that He could love us that much. Remember Him in His death today.
Service
ECC 9:10
Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work  .  .  .  in the grave.
Eccl. 9:10
You have only this life to serve the Lord. When you stand before Him at your life review time, will you be able to look back and say, “Yes, I served with all my might”? It’ll be too late then to change anything, and you will lose that special reward given for hearty service, if you didn’t do it that way.
M. Y. O. B
PRO 26:17
He that passeth by, and meddleth with strife belonging not to him, is like one that taketh a dog by the ears.
Prov. 26:17
You want to get into trouble? Stick your nose into other people’s business. Let’s learn now not to meddle in other people’s affairs. The New Testament says in 1 Thessalonians 4, verse 11, “to do your own business.” A nosy person can be a real pain. Help when you’re asked but don’t interfere.
Time
PSA 90:12
So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.
Psalm 90:12
What does the number 25,500 mean to you? One time a gospel preacher posted that number on the wall behind him while he spoke. Neither child nor adult could figure out what the significance of 25,500 was. The answer? 70 years may seem like a very long time until you break it down into 25,500 days.
Trials
NUM 21:6
And the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people  .  .  .  and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died.
Num. 21:6
Israel had once again angered the Lord, and so He punished them with fatal snake bites. But at the same time He sent a remedy to completely heal them. So for us God may allow a deep trial in our lives, but He’ll be right there with help - just when we need it.
Kindness
COL 3:12
Put on, therefore, as the elect of God  .  .  .  kindness.
Col. 3:12
God is very kind. He reached down and touched us when we were untouchable. His ways are the ways of gentleness. How is it with you? Are you kind to others? ALWAYS? Or is there sometimes a sarcastic spirit, a sharp response, a hateful look? Let’s be like the good Samaritan who took pity on the wounded man. Let’s show kindness to others today  .  .  .  and every day.
Safety
18:10
The name of the Lord is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.
Prov. 18:10
The story is told of a man who moved from California to Ohio because he had a tremendous fear of earthquakes. Unfortunately, several years later his house was destroyed by a tornado! No one has to tell you that there is no place of safety on earth. Or is there? If you belong to Jesus, John 10:28 says that no one can take you out of His hand. There’s no safer place than that.
Worship
JOH 4:23
The true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship Him.
John 4:23
True worship! I wonder how many times our worship is only superficial - our heart is not really in it. Let’s examine our motive today, before we worship Him who is worthy of our worship, and make sure it’s right before God. Our worship should be in and of the Spirit and with the right heart - one that’s full of thanks for what God’s Son has done.
Service
GEN 5:13
By love serve one another.
Gal. 5:13
Service for the Lord can be service to others. But there will only be reward if it’s done in love. Are we willing to be a servant - to try to help others in need? Look around. There’s lots that needs to be done, right where you are.
Patience
1CO 13:4
Charity suffereth long.
1 Cor. 13:4
This really means that love is patient. It will put up with the faults of others and their shortcomings, and never give up on them. The Lord showed this characteristic when He was here, and even now in heaven He is tremendously patient with each of us. Let’s try to be more like Him.
My Pathway
DEU 33:24
Let Asher  .  .  .  dip his foot in oil.
Deut. 33:24
The oil would speak of the Holy Spirit. The foot would speak to us of our pathway. Dipping our foot in oil would speak to us of a pathway that is guided by the Spirit and therefore pleasing to God. That will result in joy.
Courtship
GEN 24:58
Wilt thou go with this man?  .  .  .  I will go.
Gen. 24:58
Why could Rebecca be so certain? Because the Lord had been the driving force behind the whole “romance”. Is He the center of yours (or will He be if and when love comes your way)? In all things He must have the preeminence. If both sides of a relationship want to please the Lord, then you’re off to a good start.
Liberty
GEN 5:1
Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ has made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.
Gal. 5:1
It seems that in large cities the police spend a great deal of their time at night trying to quiet down the loud music and parties. Often one man’s “freedom” becomes another’s headache. Liberty (freedom from imprisonment) often clashes with license (the undisciplined abuse of liberty). In our spiritual lives we are governed by the “law of liberty”, which means we can do what we want, because what we want is to please the Lord.
Trouble
JOH 14:1
Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in Me.
John 14:1
Do you have trouble in your life - you don’t know where to turn or what to do? It seems as if there are many in the world in that situation. Do you believe in God? Believe in Jesus too. Trust Him. He’s the only One who can be a true help in trouble.
Worship
HEB 11:21
By faith Jacob  .  .  .  worshipped, leaning upon the top of his staff.
Heb. 11:21
Jacob worshipped! What a terrific end of one who had failed so many times and worked his own schemes so much of his life. We can identify with Jacob’s failures. Can we also identify with his worshipping heart? Can you really worship the Lord today? By faith? And what about leaning on his staff? What does this suggest to you?
Service
MAR 14:6
She hath wrought a good work on Me.
Mark 14:6
What a commendation! This woman, who poured an alabaster box of ointment on the Lord, was commended by the Lord for what she had done. Can He say the same of your service for Him? Have you done a good work for the Lord? It may not be counted as much in man’s eyes (or even in yours), but anything done for the Lord will bring a reward from Him.
Love
EPH 3:17
That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend  .  .  .
Eph. 3:17
You’ll have to get your Bible out and read verses 17, 18 and 19 to get the full message. One important point. Being rooted and grounded in what? LOVE! This is the key to being able to get along with others. Enjoy the love of Christ and let it be part of you.
Abiding
JOH 15:4
Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in Me.
John 15:4
Perhaps you’ve noticed a situation where a Christian may be living a seemingly normal life. Suddenly a couple of things go wrong and he falls apart. Someone else may go through a great trial and yet he goes through it with real peace and even praise for God. The difference? The second Christian is consciously abiding and trusting in the Lord.
Testimony
COL 3:1-2
If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above .  .  .  . Set your affections on things above, not on things on the earth.
Col. 3:1, 2
Regarding our testimony, Larry Burkett, a well-known Christian financial counselor, has stated that moderation in the use of money by a Christian is one of the things that impresses the unbeliever the most (when such moderation exists). No one says that we should live in tents or not eat ice cream, but here’s a good reason to control our life-style and our spending.
Alone
1KI 19:14
1KI 19:18
I, even I only, am left.
1 Kings 19:14
I have left  .  .  .  seven thousand.
1 Kings 19:18
Elijah thought he was the only one left who was faithful to God. He didn’t know that the Lord had seven thousand others who had not worshipped Baal either. It may seem that you are alone in your faithfulness to the Lord. But you don’t know how He is working in the hearts of others. Don’t get discouraged. You are NOT alone.
Just for Today
DEU 33:25
As thy days, so shall thy strength be.
Deut. 33:25
You may not see a solution to the problem you face today. But remember this verse.
Our God is a God that gives strength for today.
So never mind what tomorrow may bring.
Just for today new strength I’ll find.
He’ll give me strength and peace of mind.
Tomorrow may bring a trial my way,
But I can trust Him - just for today.
Worship
EXO 12:14
This day shall be unto you for a memorial.
Ex. 12:14
Why is today a special day? So that we won’t forget what it cost the Lord to pay our way to heaven. It cost Him His life - at Calvary. And we are so occupied with a zillion other things that we would forget all about Him if we didn’t set aside a special time to remember. Let’s remember Him today in this very special memorial service - the breaking of bread.
Service
COL 1:10
That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work.
Col. 1:10
There’s so much to do. God needs workers in His harvest field. And He has a job for you to do. Most of all though, He wants you to live and act like a Christian. Opportunities will open up and you can work for Him in a world that desperately needs Him. Be fruitful!
Temptation
1CO 10:13
God is faithful.
1 Cor. 10:13
“There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but GOD IS FAITHFUL, who will not suffer [let] you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way of escape, that ye may be able to bear it.” That’s the whole verse. Memorize it today. It’s for you. God will help you through ANY testing (temptation). Trust Him!
Liberty
ISA 61:1
He hath sent me to bind up the broken-hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound.
Isa. 61:1
The freedom of knowing your sins are gone surpasses any other “prison release.” We are still responsible, though, to the Lord and to other Christians. Have you ever felt that someone is trying to lay some “rules” on you that go too far? Maybe they are too harsh, but be careful not to go too far the other way, in rebellion. The Lord has set you free - to live for Him.
Nervous?
PSA 81:10
I am the LORD thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt: open thy mouth wide, and I will fill it.
Psalm 81:10
Have you ever had to speak in public and been so scared that the ground shook around you? This verse, although in context refers to the Lord providing for the children of Israel, has been a great help to many who are nervous about preaching the gospel. The next time you have an opportunity to share your faith with a lost friend but feel hesitant, remember this verse and prayerfully ask the Lord to give you the right words.
Peace
JOB 22:21
Acquaint now thyself with Him, and be at peace.
Job 22:21
Peace is found in walking close to Jesus;
Acquaint yourself with Him today, my friend;
Trust Him with your life and all your doings;
He will give true peace until the end.
The world knows nothing of the peace of heaven;
The world is full of turmoil, care, and strife.
So let the Savior shed His peace upon you;
And let the peace of God rule in your life.
Confidence
DEU 33:27
The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms.
Deut. 33:27
I watched as a mother was in a pool with her young child. She held her arms underneath the child to support him and help him stay above the water. The child was completely secure and confident in the strength and ability of his mom. That’s really the way it is with God and His children. He keeps His arms underneath us in the waters of this life and helps us stay afloat. Remember as you go about today that God’s arms are underneath you.
Worship
EXO 12:14
And this day shall be unto you for a memorial.
Ex. 12:14
Today is a special day. It’s the day that Jesus rose from the dead - the first day of the week. And it’s the day we set aside to remember Him in His death. The Israelites had a special day for remembering their release from Egyptian slavery. Let us remember, today, that our release from Satan’s slavery is because Jesus died and rose again. Remember Him today.
God’s Will
ACT 22:14
The God of our fathers hath chosen thee, that thou shouldest know His will.
Acts 22:14
Paul was specially chosen and knew exactly what God’s will was for him. So in spite of immense persecution, which would probably make most of us quit, Paul continued with his work knowing that he was doing God’s will. You too are specially chosen for a unique work for God that only you can do. Getting to know God’s will for you is exciting. Doing His will is even better.
Testimony
DEU 24:21
When thou gatherest the grapes of thy vineyard, thou shalt not glean it afterward: it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow.
Deut. 24:21
What do others see when they observe your life? Do they see one who is kind and compassionate? Or do they see someone who does everything for themselves? This is a real challenge. May the Lord help you today to be like Him and have a real care for the stranger, the fatherless, and the widows.
Kindness
1CO 13:14
Charity  .  .  .  is kind.
1 Cor. 13:4
Here’s another challenge for each heart. Love is kind. If you know the Lord as Savior you have God’s love in you. And God shows immense kindness. We should too. In our dealings today let’s try to let God’s kindness show through us. We have the power to do it.
Boasting
1CO 13:4
Charity  .  .  .  vaunteth not itself.
1 Cor. 13:4
The word vaunt means to boast. So true love will not boast of itself. No, all our boasting is in the Lord Jesus. He has won salvation for us. We are nothing in ourselves. We have nothing to boast of or in. Love does not boast.
Pride
1CO 13:4
Charity  .  .  .  is not puffed up.
1 Cor. 13:4
There is no room for pride if our hearts are filled with the love of God. And we tend so often to be proud. In Proverbs it tells us that even a proud look is an abomination to the Lord and is hated by Him. Let us be very careful to control any proud thoughts or looks or words in our life.
Witness
1CO 13:4-5
Charity  .  .  .  doth not behave itself unseemly.
1 Cor. 13:4, 5
If you “behave unseemly” you run the risk of bringing yourself into danger or disgrace, for love doesn’t act disgracefully. Our actions should never bring looks or thoughts of reproach from others. Everything we do should be above reproach. That’s a pretty high standard but God has set it for us. And with the high standard He’s also given us the power to attain it. It’s not that love should not behave disgracefully, but that it doesn’t; because God’s love can’t.
Worship
PSA 95:6
O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the LORD our maker.
Psalm 95:6
When we think about the awesomeness of God our maker, our reaction should be to worship and bow down. He made us; He provided salvation for us at no charge to us; He’s got a home prepared in heaven for us at no charge. And yet, if He so chose He could annihilate us all and start over. But His love is too great and His gift too costly. Remember that as you worship today.
Devotion
PRO 23:26
My son, give me thine heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways.
Prov. 23:26
Devotion is defined as “a deep, steady affection; an earnest loyalty.” A respected, godly brother was asked what he felt was lacking among Christians today. His answer was simply, “Devotedness to Christ.” Our appreciation of the Lord and our heart-felt love for Him simply do not run deep enough. Instead of being concerned with questions about why we can’t do this or what’s wrong with that, rather ask the Lord to deepen your love and devotedness. Doesn’t He deserve better from us?
Impossible
MAT 19:26
Jesus  .  .  .  said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.
Matt. 19:26
There are many things that to us appear to be impossible to solve. And with men they are impossible. But don’t forget that the One who made the earth and everything that lives on it finds nothing impossible. Are you in an “impossible” situation? Turn to the Lord Jesus and let Him take care of it for you. It may require dedication in prayer for a certain length of time before you will see any results, but be assured that God knows what to do and how to do it.
Loneliness
PSA 102:6-7
I am like a pelican of the wilderness: I am like an owl of the desert. I watch, and am as a sparrow alone upon the housetop.
Psalm 102:6, 7
Now that’s loneliness! And it was felt by the Son of God - our Lord Jesus. Don’t you see that He knows how you feel when you’re alone? Did your friends leave you out of some plan? Has a close friend given you up for someone or something else? The Lord knows how you feel and is right there beside you to comfort you in your loneliness. Reach out your hand and take His. He cares!
Forgiveness
PSA 103:10
He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities.
Psalm 103:10
Have you ever known of a person who felt they were wronged and reacted by not speaking to the other party? Sadly, this happens among Christians and the silence may go on for years. If we had even a small apprehension of how huge a debt the Lord has forgiven those who trust in Him, we wouldn’t DARE go on with an unforgiving spirit. Asking the Lord to keep you from this sin and praying for those that irritate you, can only bring blessing in your life and theirs.
Compassion
PSA 69:20
I looked for some to take pity, but there was none; and for comforters, but I found none.
Psalm 69:20
Here’s another situation that the Lord found Himself in as a man: looking for sympathy and finding none. Have you ever needed some shoulder to cry on, someone who is willing to listen to your troubles? You may be hard pressed to find one perhaps. Even close friends sometimes may be too busy to care for us. But the Lord fully understands what you are going through and He wants to help. He’s there with a heart full of compassion. Then you can go and show the same to someone else in trouble. Let’s all be compassionate listeners.
Distress
PSA 4:1
Thou hast enlarged me when I was in distress.
Psalm 4:1
It has been the experience of many Christians that the best times can be in some of the deepest trials and afflictions. Why? Because they have experienced the comfort of the Lord. How would it be with you? How is it with you, if you are going through trials right now? Are you taking it from the Lord? Is He real to you today and do you know that He will bring blessing from this trial?
Worship
PSA 96:8
Give unto the LORD the glory due unto His name: bring an offering, and come into His courts.
Psalm 96:8
What a tremendous privilege - to come into the presence of the Lord and bring an offering. Bring the best offering you can to Him today - that’s your heart - a heart that is full of love and praise for what Jesus did for you at Calvary.
Service
2CO 6:1
As workers together with Him.
2 Cor. 6:1
What a team! The apostle Paul and God working together. Do you know that the team can be you and God? You working with Him and for Him. And He is great to work for. Experience the joy of working with the Lord today. There’s nothing quite like it.
Rest
MAT 11:28
Come unto Me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Matt. 11:28
Often we are so busy with our hands that we neglect the need of our heart. Are you carrying a burden that you can’t seem to shake? Turn to the Lord Jesus. He alone can take it away and replace it with something that’s easy and light. Does this mean that all your troubles will go away? No. But the Lord is always there to help you bear them and bring you through. Come to Jesus. Let Him help you.
Peace
PRO 19:23
The fear of the LORD tendeth to life: and he that hath it shall abide satisfied; he shall not be visited with evil.
Prov. 19:23
Here’s the secret of real peace. When trouble strikes you can be at peace because the Lord is with you. Do you have your confidence in the Lord Jesus Christ? Put Him as your main object today. You’ll have real peace.
Wisdom
PRO 8:11
For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it. Prov. 8:11
Memorize this verse. And then apply it. Wisdom - that is godly wisdom given from above - is better than anything else you can get or own. A person will gain more respect by their wise council than by whatever wealth they may have. Pray for wisdom; the Lord will give it. And then use it.
Courtship
PRO 18:22
Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing, and obtaineth favor of the LORD.
Prov. 18:22
Wives don’t grow on trees! Nor do they arrive in a surprise package in the mail! You have to find (look for) one. BUT - use wisdom (see yesterday’s article), guidance and dependence on the Lord, prayer, and make sure her object is the same as yours. That is, that she puts Christ first. If she doesn’t, you’ll be headed for difficulty.
Laborers
1TH 5:12-13
Know them which labor among you, and are over you in the Lord .  .  .  . And to esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake.
1 Thess. 5:12, 13
This is a hard exhortation because there are those we naturally like and those we don’t. But the exhortation is without partiality: to esteem laborers very highly in love for their work’s sake. Nothing here about personality. Try to see their works and love them for that. Each has a gift in a particular area. Appreciate them for that.
Worship
GEN 40:14
But think on me when it shall be well with thee.
Gen. 40:14
Often we turn to the Lord when the going gets tough but it is another thing to think about Him when everything’s going well. Joseph, in our verse today, asked the butler to remember him when he was back in his old job and doing well. But the butler forgot. Just a little lesson to us that we’d forget all about the Lord too unless we had something to remember Him by. The loaf and the cup remind us of Him in His death. Think on Him today.
Servants
AMO 3:7
The Lord GOD  .  .  .  revealeth His secret unto His servants.
Amos 3:7
Neat, eh? God sharing His secret with His servants. What is the secret? His plan for your salvation, what He has prepared for you for eternity. This was all hidden from the Old Testament saints but is shown to us today through the Spirit. But you have to be one of His children to enjoy His secret. Are you in His family?
Peacemakers
MAT 5:9
Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
Matt. 5:9
If there’s something needed in families and assemblies today more than ever it’s peacemakers. There are many problems and plenty of folks who love to “fight.” Let’s be known as a peacemaker. Not at the expense of the truth, but in truth keep the peace. This means not fighting back. And we should try to reconcile those who are at odds.
Language
EPH 4:29
Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth.
Eph. 4:29
It’s easy to get caught up in the cussing and filthy talk at school or college. Be very careful that your language is that which is suitable for a Christian. They said of Peter at the Lord’s arrest that his speech betrayed him. Your speech too tells whether or not you are the Lord’s. Watch your mouth.
Misunderstood
MAT 12:23-24
And all the people  .  .  .  said, Is not this the Son of David? But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub.
Matt. 12:23, 24
We have a Savior who knows what it is to be wrongly and maliciously accused. He was misunderstood by His peers for the good that He did. You too may experience being falsely accused. You may be misunderstood. Have confidence in the Lord that He knows how you feel and He supports you even though others have turned against you. The Lord never fought back. We shouldn’t either.
Boasting
PRO 27:2
JAM 1:17
Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth.
Prov. 27:2
Remember that the Lord expects dedication from the heart as unto Him, whether in school or at work. Lip service in order to get ahead is nauseous. Praise others, yes. But don’t brag about yourself. Your quiet, dedicated service will show through. Your mouth will just get in the way and turn others off.
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above.
James 1:17
There are no exceptions! Every good and perfect gift is from God. God is love and His gifts to His own are given in love from a heart of love. The best gift that He gave was His only Son. The Apostle Paul’s response when he thought on this was, “Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift.” What is our response?
Worship
2CO 5:21
For He hath made Him to be sin for us, who knew no sin.
2 Cor. 5:21
We cannot really understand the Lord’s hatred of sin. Yet God heaped all our sins on His Son and punished Him for them just as if He had committed them all Himself. He who was (and is) perfect was made sin for us. Why? So that we might, through faith, be made righteous. This should make us bow our hearts in worship and adoration today as we remember the Lord’s death in the breaking of bread.
Service
RUT 2:12
The LORD recompense thy work, and a full reward be given thee.
Ruth 2:12
There’s a reward for service that’s done from the heart for the Lord and for the benefit of others. Ruth had been very kind to her mother-in-law. And she was rewarded for it. Service for the Lord is giving what you have for others as unto the Lord. Let’s serve Him today in humbleness and simplicity.
Faith
HEB 2:9
We see Jesus  .  .  .  crowned with glory and honor.
Heb. 2:9
Faith sees what people can’t. By faith we see the Lord honored and glorified for His faithfulness unto death. The Lord was hated, mistreated, rejected, and crucified on earth. Now in heaven He is loved, worshipped, and honored. Can you see Him this way today - by faith?
Comfort
LUK 24:15
Jesus Himself drew near, and went with them.
Luke 24:15
Just when the two in our verse were leaving God’s center to go to their home, and when they were sad because their Messiah was “dead”, then Jesus comes to comfort them and encourage them back to the “center.” Are you down? Feel the Lord by your side today as He walks with you when you’re sad. He wants you to be happy.
Turning Back
ACT 7:39
In their hearts [they] turned back again into Egypt.
Acts 7:39
This is a sad (and unhappy) state to be in. A Christian who turns back again into the world will suffer a great loss. No, you won’t lose your salvation but you will lose peace with God, a good conscience, and a happy life. Don’t turn back again into “Egypt.” Stand firm in the faith and wait for the Lord’s coming.
Prayer
1SA 1:17
EPH 5:20
God  .  .  .  grant thee thy petition that thou hast asked of Him.
1 Sam. 1:17
Giving thanks always for all things unto God.
Eph. 5:20
Have you been jotting down things to pray for? (There’s not much space so you can’t be asking for too much!!) Check back and see if they have been answered. Don’t forget to give thanks for those requests that have been answered and continue to pray for those that haven’t. God answers prayer!
Grace
JOH 8:7
He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.
John 8:7
Read John 8:1-11. It’s a wonderful story on how to act in grace. Not that we should overlook sin. No! But don’t take the attitude towards those that do that you are perfect and would never do such a thing. Show grace and love in helping to restore someone who has done wrong. Remember - you could fall into the same trap.
Worship
1CO 5:7-8
Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us: therefore let us keep the feast.
1 Cor. 5:7, 8
What does this mean? Just that the sacrificial lamb that was killed in order to save the Israelites from the destroying angel is a picture to us of the death of the Lord Jesus to save us from destruction. Therefore, let us remember Him today as we take the loaf and the cup. This could be the last time.
Service
ROM 6:13
Yield yourselves unto God  .  .  .  and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.
Rom. 6:13
A YIELD sign on the highway means that we must let those on the main road go first. Are we as Christians willing to let God have first place in our lives? We are often like Peter - act first, think later. Let’s think first, let God have first place, and then give Him all of ourselves in service.
Love of Money
MAR 10:22
And he  .  .  .  went away grieved: for he had great possessions.
Mark 10:22
Beware of the dangers of money. It can turn your heart away from the Lord and cause you to set your affections on worldly possessions rather than heavenly blessings. We never read of the rich young man in our verse today ever coming to Jesus again. We do know that he went away sad.
Love the Lord
JOS 23:11
Take good heed therefore unto yourselves, that ye love the LORD your God.
Josh. 23:11
It would almost seem unnecessary to admonish someone this way. Or is it necessary? In a day when our hearts and affections are being pulled in every direction it is good to be reminded to love the Lord. How easy it is, in the rush of life, to forget Him. Read your Bible, pray every day, and don’t forget to love Him.
Stubbornness
PRO 29:1
He, that being often reproved hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.
Prov. 29:1
Wow! Hey, listen! Do you refuse to change your ways in spite of repeated warnings? Look out! The Lord may have to speak very strongly. Are you unsaved? Then accept Jesus right now! Is your walk displeasing to Him? Turn around - before He, in His righteousness, cuts you off. When He does, there’s no remedy.
Restraint
1KI 1:6
And his father had not displeased him at any time in saying, Why hast thou done so?
1 Kings 1:6
Never once had David questioned his son -Adonijah about his behavior. Young person, I know you don’t like your parents always asking you where you’ve been and what you’ve done. But if they do ask, it’s because they care about your well-being and don’t want to see you get hurt or get into the wrong crowd. Thank God for parents who care enough to want to know what you’ve been doing. Restraint is a good trainer.
Thanks
1CO 23:27-30
From twenty years old and above  .  .  .  their office was  .  .  .  to stand every morning to thank and praise the LORD, and likewise at even.
1 Chron. 23:27-30
Hey, that’s pretty neat! Why shouldn’t it be good for you too? Can you thank the Lord for something? Can you think of a good reason to praise Him? I’m sure you can say “yes” to both questions. For Israel’s youth this was “their office.” For you and me, it’s a natural response from a saved heart to thank and praise the One who saved us. And you don’t have to wait until you’re twenty to start!
Praise
ACT 3:8
He  .  .  .  entered  .  .  .  into the temple, walking, and leaping, and praising God.
Acts 3:8
And no wonder. This man had been lame from birth and had spent his life being supported by donations from sympathetic passers-by. Now through the power of God working in Peter and John he had been healed. You too were spiritually lame at birth. Only through the power of God working through the gospel have you been “healed.” This should cause you to walk, leap, and praise.
Service
MAT 25:18
He that had received one [talent] went and digged in the earth, and hid his lord’s money.
Matt. 25:18
Are you burying your Lord’s money in the earth (work, studies, sports, pleasure)? If you say you are a Christian but you don’t use your ability for the Lord then possibly you aren’t REAL and are destined to be cast into “outer darkness.” If you are truly the Lord’s then use what you have for Him. It pleases the Lord when we use our abilities in His service. Don’t forget that everything that you have has been lent to you by the Lord. Use it for His glory.
Falling
2PE 3:17
Beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own steadfastness.
2 Pet. 3:17
Did you get tripped up and fall? Did Satan get an advantage over you? Sometimes that happens because we get careless about sin - we don’t watch every step. Sin is like a cancer, sometimes spreading very slowly. That’s when it’s very dangerous because we accept it without realizing it. BEWARE, young Christian, beware.
Walk
GEN 5:22GEN 6:9MIC 6:8
Enoch walked with God.
Noah walked with God.
Walk humbly with thy God.
Gen. 5:22; Gen. 6:9; Micah 6:8
We have two men here who walked with God and were blessed by Him. One was “raptured” and the other was preserved through the judgment of the flood. The challenge for us is to do the same thing - to walk with God. Notice the word “humbly.” We are not making it to heaven through our own greatness but because of the finished work at Calvary. Walk with God!
Leaving
JOH 6:67-68
Will ye also go away?  .  .  .  Lord, to whom shall we go?
John 6:67, 68
The Lord was concerned that His disciples would follow the crowd who had just left Him because His teachings were too hard for them to understand and accept. But the disciples knew that being with Jesus was the only place to hear the words of truth. Are you thinking of “going away”? Reconsider. You won’t find any resting place away from the Lord.
Giving
DEU 15:7-8
If there be among you a poor man  .  .  .  thou shalt open thine hand wide unto him.
Deut. 15:7, 8
The Lord has many lessons in Scripture about the poor. And one is about being very generous to anyone who is poor. Never despise the poor but give them what they need of the necessities of life. The end of verse 8 says thou “shalt surely lend him sufficient for his need, in that which he wanteth.” Be careful that you’re not “taken in” by free-loaders. But if the person is truly poor, be kind.
Comfort
1PE 2:25
For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.
1 Pet. 2:25
Here we have double security. Each of us as individuals has the Lord as our personal guardian and guide (Shepherd), and as provider for our spiritual well-being (Bishop). We often think of ourselves as part of a large group. But never forget that the Lord Jesus watches over us and cares for us as individuals too.
Worship
MAT 28:17
And when they saw Him, they worshipped Him.
Matt. 28:17
Have you seen Jesus? What’s your response? It should be worship. As we meet around Him today at the breaking of bread, our hearts should bow in humble adoration and worship to think that God’s Son would die so that we wouldn’t have to. Let’s worship Him today in spirit and in truth.
Service
MAR 5:19
Go home to thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee.
Mark 5:19
Here we have true service in the gospel. The lunatic who was healed wanted to be with the Lord - a natural response. But the Lord needed him in the gospel fields among a people who asked the Lord “to depart out of their coasts.” Legion’s work was a big one - but one full of blessing because the next time Jesus came to the area they received Him gladly. Perhaps the Lord wants your service to be in the gospel too.
Forgetting
DEU 6:11
When thou shalt have eaten and be full; then beware lest thou forget the LORD.
Deut. 6:11, 12
One of the major problems of our wealthy society is that we become so occupied with material goods that we forget the Lord. What a sad condition to be in. It’s like the butler in Genesis who, when everything was going well for him, forgot all about Joseph still stuck in prison. Don’t forget the Lord today. Give some time for thoughts of Him.
Reality
2TI 1:5
I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee.
2 Tim. 1:5
Many of us pretend to be someone or in a state that we really aren’t. The Apostle Paul was “filled with joy” when he saw Timothy’s reality in faith. Is your faith real? Are you showing on the outside what’s really on the inside? If not, ask the Lord today to help you to be real, to be truthful about your feelings and what you really are.
Support
PSA 56:9
God is for me.
Psa. 56:9
Wow! You mean God, the Creator, is for me? Yes, He sure is. He wants the best for you not only in eternity but now, too. Why not let Him take full control of your life - sit back and let Him do the driving.
GOD is for me.
God IS for me.
God is FOR me.
God is for ME.
Forgiving
2TI 4:16
I pray God that it may not be laid to their charge.
2 Tim. 4:16
The Apostle gives us a high standard to follow. So does Stephen. He said, as he was dying from stoning, “Lord, lay not this sin to their charge.” The Lord Jesus from the cross said, “Father, forgive them.” Can you forgive others like this?
Protection
GEN 28:15
I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest.
Gen. 28:15
What a tremendous promise! This was made to Jacob but we can take it for ourselves too. The Lord will NEVER leave us. We CAN’T lose our salvation. He just won’t let us go! So in this verse we have the Lord’s presence and His protection. He has a tremendous love for us and will not leave us.
Worship
GEN 4:4
And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock.  .  .  .  And the Lord had respect unto Abel.
Gen. 4:4
Does the Lord have respect unto you? Is your “offering” acceptable? It will be if you bring a full heart of genuine thanksgiving and praise for what Jesus did at Calvary. What a wonderful privilege to know that God accepts our worship when it is in sincerity and truth. Be genuine today as you worship the Lord.
Service
JON 1:2-3
Arise, go to Nineveh.  .  .  .  But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish.
Jonah 1:2, 3
Jonah was a servant of the Lord who didn’t like the service the Lord wanted him to do. He tried to run away, but God wouldn’t let him. The work had to be done - by Jonah. Are we willing to do what God wants us to do, even though, naturally, we don’t want to? He’ll give us the strength to do it. Ask Him - then serve Him with gladness.
Pretenders
MAT 7:22-23
Many will say to Me in that day, Lord, Lord.  .  .  .  And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from Me.
Matt. 7:22, 23
What a terrible end! To get to the door of heaven - even saying “Lord” and doing miracles, and casting out demons. And then to hear those awful words from the Lord himself, “Depart from me.” Don’t be a pretender. Accept Jesus as Lord, repenting and confessing your sin. Make sure that when Jesus comes, He’ll take you with Him too.
Living
For to me to live is _______________.
Phil. ___ : ___
I left it blank on purpose. I want you to fill in what you really want to live for. Then find out what the Apostle Paul chose and see if you match his response. It’s a real challenge!
Communion
1KI 10:2
She communed with him of all that was in her heart.
1 Kings 10:2
The Queen of Sheba told Solomon everything. Nothing was held back. Her doubts, her questions, her anxieties. And Solomon answered them all. Our Solomon is the Lord of glory. He can answer all our questions too. Have you spent time with Him telling Him everything in your heart? You’ll feel better when you do.
Evil Speaking
JAM 4:11
Speak not evil one of another.
James 4:11
There are many verses in the New Testament against evil speaking - saying hurtful things about someone; spreading malicious gossip about others. We are also told in 1 Cor. 13:5 to think no evil. Evil thoughts lead to evil speaking, which leads to hurt feelings and ruined friendships.
Salvation
HEB 2:3
How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation.
Heb. 2:3
To neglect is really to put off. It’s not that you don’t want to get saved. No, you intend to do that. But you’re too busy to think about it right now and you’re going to wait until after  .  .  .  DON’T! Decide right now to accept the “great salvation.” After Jesus comes again it’ll be too late.
Worship
GEN 24:52
When Abraham’s servant heard their words, he worshipped the LORD, bowing himself to the earth.
Gen. 24:52
You’ll notice that worship brings respect and a humble spirit. Abraham’s servant bowed himself to the earth. We can show a humble spirit in our attitude of heart. Do we bow our hearts in humble adoration when we worship the Lord? Let’s leave all the self-boasting and pride behind as we gather today to worship the Lord.
Service
EPH 6:6
Doing the will of God from the heart; with good will doing service.
Eph. 6:6
Do you work for someone else? Then you can be doing service for the Lord while you work simply by being honest and conscientious. Never cheat on your employer in time, money, or manners. Remember - you belong to the Lord and should be acting just like Him.
Witness
JOS 2:18-21
Bind this line of scarlet thread  .  .  . and she bound the scarlet line in the window.
Josh. 2:18, 21
Rahab acted on her belief and witnessed to it in binding the scarlet line in her house window. Is your home a public witness to your belief? Do others know that you belong to Jesus? Some people have an easier time in public witness than others. If you are “scared” ask the Lord to help you. Start binding the scarlet line in your window.
Nothing
PSA 39:5
Verily every man at his best state is altogether vanity. Selah.
Psa. 39:5
“Vanity” means a puff of wind. This verse makes you feel kind of insignificant doesn’t it? At our best state we’re nothing. Nothing to boast of or in. And often we are not even at our best state. No, we can’t boast of anything in God’s presence. Our acceptance into heaven is ONLY because of God’s goodness. Nothing in ourselves is good enough. But now because of Calvary we are VERY special in God’s sight. We are as precious jewels. He loves us very much.
Friendship
2CO 6:14
Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers.
2 Cor. 6:14
A close friendship, especially between a boy and a girl, cannot be happy or lasting if one partner is a Christian and the other isn’t. If you are “going” with an unbeliever (and you are a Christian) the Lord would not want your friendship to continue. It’s an unequal yoke and can only bring trouble into your life.
Conscience
ISA 30:10
Prophesy not unto us right things, speak unto us smooth things, prophesy deceits.
Isa. 30:10
If a speaker says something that speaks to your conscience - so be it. That’s good. God’s earthly people, in our verse, had gone so far from Him that they told the speakers what to say so that their conscience wouldn’t be bothered. Let the Lord tell the speakers what to speak and let us respond accordingly.
Covetousness
PRO 28:16
He that hateth covetousness shall prolong his days.
Pro. 28:16
Covetousness is idolatry. (See Col. 3:5.) Idolatry is the worst offence against God. This world exists on covetousness. So we have a major problem. Let’s make it a special matter of prayer that the Lord will help us not to be covetous.
Worship
EXO 4:31
And the people believed.  .  .  .  Then they bowed their heads and worshipped.
Ex. 4:31
Relief for the Israelites was on its way. God was going to rescue His earthly people from their bondage. Our relief from Satan’s bondage was won at Calvary by the death of the Lord Jesus on the cross. This should make us bow our hearts in worship as we remember Him in His death today.
Service
2TI 1:3
God, whom I serve.
2 Tim. 1:3
Paul wrote this towards the end of his life. And he wasn’t out serving in the foreign mission fields at the time. No, he was in prison. And still serving? Yes. In witness, in correspondence, and in prayers. How’s your service doing?
Rapture
TIT 2:13
Looking for that blessed hope.
Titus 2:13
Now that’s something worth looking for! That blessed hope! What is it? The coming of the Lord for His own. Are you looking? Many Christians today are not expecting the Lord to come soon. “Oh, maybe in the distant future but not today.” For the true believer His coming is soon! Watch for Him!
Repentance
JOE 2:12-13
Turn ye even to Me with all your heart  .  .  .  and rend your heart, and not your garments.
Joel 2:12, 13
The Lord desires absolute honesty. He knows when you’re pretending. Although this verse is primarily written to God’s earthly people the principle is true for us. Be genuine and when you repent (or are sorry for sin in your life), repent from the heart. Don’t just make it an outward show. God wants reality.
Restraint
1SA 3:13
His sons made themselves vile, and he restrained them not.
1 Sam. 3:13
Eli did not discipline his sons who were very corrupt and immoral. So God stepped in and disciplined them severely - by death. Don’t despise parental restraint. They are doing God’s work and being more gentle than the Lord may be if He must step in in judgment. A certain amount of restraint is good training. Don’t turn against it.
Trials
PSA 66:12
We went through fire and through water: but Thou broughtest us out into a wealthy place.
Psa. 66:12
Does it seem as if you are alone in your trial? Rest in the Lord. He will bring you out. And not only will He bring you out but He will bring you into a wealthy place, or a moist place. Or, if you like, one of refreshment and blessing. God only seeks your good. We sometimes get into trouble because of our own willfulness. Let the Lord take over and bring you out.
Living
PSA 50:23
To him that ordereth his conversation [manner of life] aright will I show the salvation of God.
Psa. 50:23
How’s your life? In order? Do you try to please the Lord and live for Him? That’s the way it should be. Does this verse mean that a Christian who’s not walking right won’t see God’s salvation? NO, it doesn’t. But for a Christian to want to walk to please God there is a special closeness and joy in God that others won’t experience. Let’s make a special effort today to please our Lord.
Worship
EXO 12:27
It is the sacrifice of the Lord’s Passover.  .  .  .  And the people bowed the head and worshipped.
Ex. 12:27
A remembrance feast. A reminder of the cost of their release from Egypt. It was just a lamb - but it had the characteristics of the Lord Jesus - God’s Lamb - in that it was “without spot.” As we remember our sacrifice today let us also bow the head and worship. Another remembrance feast. Another reminder of the cost of our release from “Egypt.”
Service
ACT 8:26
Arise, and go.
Acts 8:26
This short message, given to Philip when he was busy in gospel work, caused him to drop everything and go  .  .  .  to a desert, to one man who needed to know how to get saved. God is interested in individuals. And He may want you to speak to one person today. Arise, and go!!
Salvation
GEN 45:5
GAL 4:4-5
God did send me before you to preserve life.
Gen. 45:5
God sent forth His Son  .  .  .  to redeem.
Gal. 4:4, 5
Joseph, in our first verse, is picturing for us what actually happened in the second verse when Jesus came to die for mankind. He has died for all. But it’s only those who believe it who will receive a full and free salvation. Are you saved? If not then take Jesus as your Savior today.
Worldliness
RUT 2:8
Go not to glean in another field.
Ruth 2:8
There’s a message here for each of us who belong to the Lord. He doesn’t want us to go after the world. He wants us to stay close to His people as Boaz said to Ruth, “Abide here fast by my maidens.” The Lord knows the emptiness and sorrow that are found in the world. Let’s try to glean in the Lord’s field and not Satan’s.
Patience
JAM 5:7-89
Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman  .  .  .  hath long patience.  .  .  .  Be ye also patient.
James 5:7, 8
Three times in two verses we have the word patience or patient. Twice to us and once about the Lord (or the husbandman). The Lord has long patience. He wants all people to be saved and is waiting as long as He can before He comes back to fetch us. Let us wait patiently for Him because we know why He is waiting.
Forgiveness
ACT 7:60
Lord, lay not this sin to their charge.
Acts 7:60
The ultimate sacrifice that a Christian can make is to die for Christ. The ultimate act of grace is to bear no malice and be able to forgive “those that persecute you.” What an example of both we have in Stephen - the first martyr. If our turn comes, may we do the same.
Witness
ACT 6:15
And all that sat in the council  .  .  .  saw his face as it had been the face of an angel.
Acts 6:15
What a tremendous witness. All those in the room could tell by his face whom Stephen was enjoying. How is it with us? Can others see a happy, open face that reflects the love and enjoyment of the Lord Jesus Christ?
Worship
EXO 33:10
All the people rose up and worshipped, every man in his tent door.
Ex. 33:10
Worship can take place anywhere, any time. But it is especially wonderful to meet collectively to remember together what the Lord Jesus did at Calvary - how He suffered for sin, how He died, how He rose again - that we might go free. Hallelujah, what a Savior!
Service
LUK 2:37
She was a widow  .  .  .  but served God with fastings and prayers night and day.
Luke 2:37
Here’s an 84-year-old widow who served God by fasting and praying. Most of you reading this are probably teenagers. Maybe some of you are unable to get out and serve the Lord because you are disabled. Hey, guess what? You can serve Him from your wheelchair or sick-bed - by praying. Pray for God’s servants, for their protection from Satan’s attacks. She was 84 but she was still serving.
Purity
JAM 3:17
But the wisdom that is from above is first pure.
James 3:17
Purity is so necessary in an impure world. God’s wisdom, given to all His own who ask Him for it, has purity as its first and primary characteristic. In dealing with others, whether in your Christian circle or in school or at work, use wisdom and keep purity at the top of the list.
Peace
JAM 3:17
But the wisdom that is from above is  .  .  .  peaceable.
James 3:17
God loves a peacemaker. And God’s wisdom is peaceable. Remember to keep the peace in your dealings and reactions with others, especially with the Christians that you have fellowship with. Wisdom would never deliberately cause trouble.
Gentleness
JAM 3:17
But the wisdom that is from above is  .  .  .  gentle.
James 3:17
How a gentle person stands out in a crowd! And we aren’t talking about muscle here. We’re talking about gentle of tongue, gentle in personality, gentle in reaction to others. Ask the Lord to help you to show gentleness - to have a spirit that will not give offense.
Obedience
JAM 3:17
But the wisdom that is from above is  .  .  .  easy to be entreated.
James 3:17
The meaning of “easy to be entreated” is “ready to obey.” Godly wisdom is ready to obey. How do you react to instruction? Are you ready to obey? This would be God’s desire for you. Ask Him to help you be an obedient Christian.
Mercy
JAM 3:17
But the wisdom that is from above is  .  .  .  full of mercy.
James 3:17
The Lord’s heart is full of mercy and He showed it when He was here. When He was reviled (or abused) He didn’t return the abuse. He did not seek revenge like we try to do sometimes. What a lesson to learn, to not seek revenge. That’s what it means to be full of mercy. No revenge, just kindness in return for unkindness. May we be like the Lord Jesus.
Worship
EXO 34:6-8
And the Lord passed by before him.  .  .  .  And Moses made haste, and bowed his head toward the earth, and worshipped.
Ex. 34:6, 8
It didn’t take Moses long to feel the need to worship when he got into the Lord’s presence. How long does it take us to feel the need to worship when we gather around the Lord on Sunday morning at the breaking of bread? A long time, maybe? Perhaps we’re not in the right frame of mind when we go to the breaking of bread. Perhaps we’re just slow to recognize that the Lord is there. Let’s worship Him properly today - remember that He is there, that He died to save us, and that He wants us to remember His death for us.
Service
JAM 3:17
But the wisdom that is from above is  .  .  .  full of  .  .  .  good fruits.
James 3:17
What are good fruits? They should be the on-going display of a saved life. Because they are saved, Christians should want to work for the Lord. Your life should reflect the life of Christ too. But the evidence of salvation will show by what you do for others. Instead of wanting to do everything for yourself, now you want to help others. That’s one way to serve the Lord. God wants us to bear much fruit.
Reactions
JAM 5:13
Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms.
James 5:13
Here are two reactions that we should all have. Are you sick? What’s your reaction to it? Do you grumble and make everybody else miserable? Try praying instead. Are you happy? Why? Because you’re saved and on your way to heaven? Then sing praise to the Lord. Good reactions, whether in sickness or in joy, are an honor to the Lord.
Deceit
ACT 5:1-2
A certain man  .  .  .  sold a possession, and kept back part of the price  .  .  .
Acts 5:1, 2
The problem wasn’t in keeping some of the sale money for himself but that he pretended that his gift (for he gave the balance to the apostles) was the whole price. Ananias tried to deceive the apostles. Peter saw through it, challenged him, and he died instantly - a solemn warning to any who would try to deceive others in spiritual things. You can’t “lie to the Holy Ghost” and expect blessing from it. Let’s be completely honest in all our affairs.
Persecution
1PE 2:20
But if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God.
1 Pet. 2:20
This verse should be a real encouragement to each of us. We try to live for the Lord. We do our best at school or at work. And then we don’t get rewarded - because we’re a Christian, or not liked, or whatever. Here we need grace to take it patiently and accept the rejection. Never forget that our reward is coming and will be given by the Lord. Don’t look for fairness here.
M. Y. O. B.
1PE 4:15
Let none of you suffer  .  .  .  as a busybody in other men’s matters.
1 Pet. 4:15
How easy it is to gossip; to stick our nose into someone else’s affairs. We are responsible to the Lord for the things we allow in our own life, not what we try to find out and pass on about others. Rather, let others know you as someone that can be trusted to keep their confidence, to provide a sympathetic listening ear. The only business we should have our nose into is our own business that the Lord has given us to do.
Watch Out
1PE 5:8
Be vigilant; because your adversary  .  .  .  walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.
1 Pet. 5:8
Yes, Satan is on the prowl. Watch out! He wants you! He wants to make you fall. He wants to make you lose the joy of your salvation. He wants you to focus your attention on the world and lose interest in the Lord. So be vigilant - always on the lookout for the enemy. Keep clear of danger zones and keep close to the Lord.
Worship
JOH 12:3
Then took Mary a pound of  .  .  . spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped His feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odor.
John 12:3
Don’t you get the impression that Jesus meant a great deal to Mary? Appreciation for Him filled her heart just as the sweet odor filled the house. Hopefully you know the Lord personally and have been forgiven of your sins. If this is true, then you know that He has given you very much. Worship is adoration and love you can give back to Him. Mary’s gift was expensive - but He was worth it to her. Is He worthy of your time, energy, and thoughts?
Service
MAT 25:40
Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these My brethren, ye have done it unto Me.
Matt. 25:40
Many of us perhaps go through an identity crisis - a questioning of self worth and usefulness in life. Jesus promises a place of fulfillment for each who will be in His service. Even doing something small for another Christian will not lose its reward. The Lord rewards the private service as well as the public. You are useful to Him. Keep serving.
Testimony
JUD 23
Hating even the garment spotted by the flesh.
Jude 23
Why does it mention “the garment” and not “the person”? Because the Christian’s new nature cannot be spoiled, but our outward testimony can. We should hate anything of the world, or sin, or Satan that spoils a Christian testimony. Let’s be very careful not to have our witness “spotted by the flesh.” Let’s radiate the characteristics of the Lord whose testimony was always a perfect representation of His Father.
Faithfulness
REV 2:10
Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.
Rev. 2:10
Are you willing to die for your faith? That’s quite a challenge, isn’t it? And yet there have been thousands who have been martyred rather than give up their belief in the Lord Jesus Christ. We may have to face this one day. Then those who are true will not give up. Those who have been pretenders will. Be real.
Listening
1SA 9:27
Stand thou still a while, that I may show thee the word of God.
1 Sam. 9:27
Hey! Would you stand still a minute? You’re always on the move - baseball, basketball, volleyball, ice cream shop with the young people. But you never stop long enough to listen to what God has to tell you. Do you read your Bible every day? That’s good! Do you think about it to see what it means? That will help you to grow. It is absolutely essential to spend some time each day with the Lord - listening to Him. None of these other activities are that necessary.
Salvation
SAM 4:3
Let us fetch the ark of the covenant  .  .  .  it may save us.
1 Sam. 4:3
The people of Israel had just lost 4,000 men in battle so they decided that by bringing the ark to the battlefield they would have victory. Wrong move! They lost another 30,000 men! Young person, religion cannot save you. You must have a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. Trusting in your own works, the “safety” of numbers, or “going to church” will not save you. Only the blood of Jesus, shed at Calvary, can make you fit for His presence.
Dedication
EZR 7:10
Ezra had prepared his heart to seek the law of the Lord, and to do it, and to teach  .  .  .
Ezra 7:10
We get three things here: (1) A commitment to learn the word of the Lord, (2) a commitment to walk in the way the Lord has marked out, and (3) a commitment to teach others. Before you can teach you must live Christ. Before you can live Him, you have to know Him. So here’s our challenge for today - be an Ezra.
Worship
ISA 26:8
The desire of our soul is to Thy name, and to the remembrance of Thee.
Isa. 26:8
What a desire! Away from self and towards the One who died to save us. Is this your desire today? To be with Jesus for an hour, to think about Him, and to remember Calvary and the awful cost of our salvation? Let’s concentrate on Him while we worship today.
Service
ACT 16:7
After they were come to Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithynia: but the Spirit suffered them not [wouldn’t let them].
Acts 16:7
A second door had just been shut. Paul may have prayed, “Now what do we do, Lord?” Perhaps he thought, “I was sent to preach and now all the doors have been shut. I might as well just quit.” But no, he just goes on to another place, Troas, taking each step by faith and there God shows him what he is to do. Do you give up because one door has been closed? The Lord has something else for you. Press on.
Communion
PSA 77:13
Thy way, O God, is in the sanctuary.
Psa. 77:13
In order to learn who God is, His power, love, and majesty, in order to know Him, we have to spend time with Him - in the sanctuary. The sanctuary is the place where God is - where His glory can be seen. Are you spending time there?
Gospel
MAT 25:10
They that were ready went in.
Matt. 25:10
Are you ready? To go to heaven, I mean. Have you trusted in Jesus as your Savior? Then you’re ready. If you haven’t - you can’t get in. That’s a very solemn thought - that someone reading this will not be able to get into heaven because they weren’t ready in time. Trust the Savior NOW - and be ready.
Trust
2KI 11:14
The pillars  .  .  .  that I may lean upon them. Judges 16:26
The king stood by a pillar.
2 Kings 11:14
Samson, after his fall, was now beginning to trust the Lord again. Recovery had been slow, as it often is after sin. Josiah, in our second verse, was young and he felt his need to trust in the Lord for guidance and protection. They both stood by a pillar - a place of security. How about you? Do you face each day in your own strength or do you, too, stand by the Pillar - the Lord Jesus Christ?
Turning Away
GEN 4:16
Cain went out from the presence of the Lord.
Gen. 4:16
How sad! Cain deliberately turned his back on God. He built a city - in other words he occupied himself with the world and everything in it. We never read of Cain talking with the Lord again. Young person, be careful of the world. It will stop you having fellowship with Christ. If you deliberately turn away there will be great sorrow in your life.
Identity
JON 1:8
Of what people art thou?
Jonah 1:8
Christian or no? Do you belong to the heavenly company? If you believe on the Lord Jesus don’t be afraid to identify with the people of God. We have been chosen to belong to the Lord. Can we pledge allegiance to Him and His people? Can you say, “I’m a Christian”? Identify yourself!
Worship
1SA 1:19
And they rose up in the morning early, and worshipped before the Lord.
1 Sam. 1:19
Have a hard time getting going this morning? Up too late last night? Let’s remember today, as we spend time in worship, that the Lord deserves and wants first place in our hearts. We have boundless energy with sports and other pleasures, but we don’t often show the same enthusiasm to meet the Lord. Maybe if we really appreciated what our sins cost the Lord to put away, we might be more willing to rise early in the morning ready to worship.
Service
1SA 1:27
The Lord hath given me my petition  .  .  .  therefore also I have lent him to the Lord.
1 Sam. 1:27, 28
Hannah was so thankful for the gift that the Lord had given her (a son) that she gave him back to the Lord, to serve Him. What an example for us. Whatever we have has been given to us by the Lord. Are we willing to give it back in service to Him? How about our life? This would be the best gift to give. “Love that transcends our highest powers, demands our life, our soul, our all.” Give yourself in service to the Lord today.
Obedience
GEN 6:22
Thus did Noah; according to all that God commanded him, so did he.
Gen. 6:22
Unquestioning, unfailing obedience characterized Noah. If he had ignored God’s instructions in just one point things would not have turned out as they did. If he had not tarred the inside “because the outside is sufficient” the ark would probably have sunk. It is so important to obey God in everything, even if we don’t understand what He is doing.
Rapture
SOS 2:10
Rise up, my love, my fair one, and come away.
Song of Sol. 2:10
What a wonderful invitation! How do our hearts respond? “Even so, come, Lord Jesus” should be our answer. The day the Lord comes is going to be a wonderful day. We will see Jesus for the first time. We will be made perfect and incorruptible. Keep looking up. He’s coming.
God First
GEN 41:16
It is not in me: God shall give  .  .  .  an answer of peace.
Gen. 41:16
Joseph was under test here. But he acted just as he normally did. He gave God the credit for his ability to interpret dreams. Do we always give God the credit? Do we put God first in everything? How much we give Him priority in our lives shows how much we love Him. Put God FIRST!
Peace
ISA 32:17
And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness, quietness and assurance for ever.
Isa. 32:17
During our life there are many voices crying out to us. Some are for help, some are to distract us, some to cause doubts and fears, some to corrupt us from the way of righteousness. Let God do His work in your heart and enjoy peace, quietness, and assurance. He can never fail, neither can His work.
Living
1PE 3:10
He that will love life, and see good days, let him  .  .  .
1 Pet. 3:10
1. Refrain his tongue from evil; 2. turn from evil and do good; 3. seek peace and pursue it. Here are three good “rules” to follow in your daily life. Do them and you’ll have a full and happy life. You’ll notice that each one affects others. All three are for the benefit of others. There’s nothing so cold and lonely as to do everything for yourself. Show your Christianity by following these three characteristics. It’ll make you happy.
Worship
PSA 122:1
I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the Lord.
Psa. 122:1
There should be joy in our hearts when we go to meet the Lord, to worship Him. If we are occupied with His love for us, His death at Calvary, His resurrection, and His coming again, we should overflow in worship to think that He did it all for us. Let’s really think about Jesus today as we meet around Him again to remember His death on the cross.
Service
PRO 3:27
Withhold not good from them to whom it is due, when it is in the power of thine hand to do it.
Pro. 3:27
What an easy thing it is to hold back just a little because of something we want for ourselves. One way of serving the Lord can be in giving to others, whether it be praise, thanks, help, or money. If we have the power or the means to give, then let us give and not worry about losing something for ourselves. The Lord will repay in His own time. He is no man’s debtor.
Overcoming
1JO 2:14
I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one.
1 John 2:14
Three things characterize the “young men” in our verse: strength, God’s Word within the heart, and overcoming Satan. But the last is impossible without the second and the second without the first. “Be strong,” the Lord told Joshua. Be strong too, young Christian.
Walking Worthy
REV 3:4
Thou hast a few names  .  .  .  which have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with Me in white: for they are worthy.
Rev. 3:4
Another of Scripture’s big challenges - to be numbered among the few who are faithful. What a tremendous blessing to be found as one of the “few” when the Lord comes. Daniel and his three friends were the only ones who would not compromise or be “defiled” (see Daniel 1:8). How about you?
Discipleship
MAR 1:17
Jesus said unto them, Come ye after Me  .  .  .  and straightway they forsook their nets, and followed Him.
Mark 1:17, 18
Simon (Peter) and Andrew were immediately obedient to the call of the Lord. They dropped everything to follow their Messiah. Jesus is calling you to be a disciple too. Are you ready to follow Him? The path may have many rough spots - but the end is to be with Him in heaven. If you are not a Christian, give your life to Christ today. Tomorrow may be too late.
Fear
MAT 14:30
But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid.
Matt. 14:30
Do you get afraid when trouble comes? So did Peter. The wind around him was very strong. The waves he was walking on were rough - and his faith wavered. So it is with us often. When our faith is put to the test we become afraid and start to sink. Copy Peter and call out, “Lord, save me!” He’s there waiting for your call.
Praise
PSA 69:30
I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify Him with thanksgiving.
Psa. 69:30
How’s your singing? Does it reflect the fact that you’re a Christian? Or do you look all sad and miserable when you sing? We often seem to be that way. Let’s try to sing happily - not just to make a noise - but to praise God in song. Our praise will be nauseous to Him if we are not doing it from a full, happy heart.
Worship
2SA 12:20
Then David arose.  .  . washed.  .  . anointed.  .  . changed.  .  . came into the house of the Lord, and worshipped.
2 Sam. 12:20
Notice that respect is shown here by David. He didn’t go to meet the Lord without first preparing for it. He washed, put on deodorant, changed his clothes, and then he went into the Lord’s house to worship. Did you today wash, anoint, and change? How about a spiritual cleansing before you meet the Lord? He deserves  .  .  .  yes, He expects it.
Service
JOH 4:34
My meat is to do the will of Him that sent Me.
John 4:34
The Lord’s one object in life was to do His Father’s will. He served God in absolute faithfulness. Whatever God asked Him to do, He did. What a lesson for us. Is our desire to do God’s will - whatever it may be? Let’s serve Him in the week before us with unquestioning obedience and dedication.
Values
MAT 26:14-15
Judas Iscariot, went unto the chief priests.  .  .  and they covenanted with him for thirty pieces of silver.
Matt. 26:14, 15
The value of something has a great deal to do with what we are willing to sacrifice for it, or what we are willing to devote to it. To Judas, who was money crazy, Jesus was worth 30 pieces of silver - just a pocket full of money. Peter was willing to die for the Lord. Stephen was stoned for his faith in Jesus. The Apostle Paul went through unbelievable hardships because of his devotion to Christ. What is Jesus Christ worth to you?
Knowing Him
JOH 17:3
And this is life eternal, that they may know Thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom Thou hast sent.
John 17:3
What does it mean to know someone? Does it simply mean to recognize their face or their voice or their handwriting? No, there’s something far deeper. It means to know how they think, how they act in certain situations, how they treat others. How well do you really know the Lord? Do you know Him as God, as Love, as the Good Shepherd, as Wisdom? Spend some time with Him today and try to get to know Him a little better.
God for Us
JOS 1:9
Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee wither soever thou goest.
Josh. 1:9
We can have confidence and assurance that Jesus is with us and on our side in our daily battles with Satan. We must never forget that we are very special to God and to the Lord. After all, He gave His life for us on Calvary’s cross. He died so that we could be with Him for all eternity. This should be a real encouragement to us. God does not look down on us. We are His children and He loves us very much. Remember Calvary - and hold your head up.
Testimony
COL 3:1-2
If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above.  .  .  .  Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.
Col. 3:1, 2
There is a terrible danger in going too far in our desire for money (or things). Regarding our testimony, Larry Burkett, a well-known Christian financial counselor, has stated that one of the things that most impresses an unbeliever is a Christian who uses moderation in the use of money. No one says that we should live in tents or not eat ice cream but let’s be careful not to splash our wealth around. Be careful how you spend.
Lust
1CO 10:6
We should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted.
1 Cor. 10:6
We are being bombarded with that which would make us lust after evil things. Pornography is on a rapid increase. BEWARE! It will catch you like a mouse in a trap and you MAY NOT BE ABLE TO ESCAPE! The murderer Ted Bundy started out in pornography and ended up in a series of murders for which he was executed. Don’t allow yourself to get into situations where your lust will be fed.
Worship
1CO 29:20
Now bless the Lord your God. And all the congregation  .  .  .  bowed down their heads, and worshipped the Lord.
1 Chron. 29:20
A call to bless the Lord caused a reaction of reverence and worship in the Lord’s people. As we go to meet the Lord and to bless [thank] Him for enduring Calvary, don’t forget to show reverence and to worship with your heart full of praise for what He has done.
Service
1PE 4:10
As every man hath received  .  .  .  so minister  .  .  .  as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.
1 Pet. 4:10
A good steward! That’s what we should be. As you have received - so minister (or serve). Use what God has given you, whether it be wealth, the ability to pray, an ability to visit the old or the sick, use it for Him - today and every day.
Obedience
1SA 15:22
To obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.
1 Sam. 15:22
Saul thought that it was more important to offer a sacrifice than to obey. God says the opposite. Obedience to Him is first - offering a sacrifice comes next. How can God accept our praise if we aren’t obedient to Him in our daily lives? Let’s get our priorities straight. OBEY, then OFFER.
Goals
PHI 3:14
I press toward the mark [goal] for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.
Phil. 3:14
The object in hockey or soccer is to score a goal. Without that you can’t win the game. The Apostle Paul was interested in one thing too - getting to the goal. What about you? Are you interested in reaching the goal so that you can win the prize? You won’t get the prize if you drop out of the race, or if you sit down and rest awhile, or if you run backwards or in the wrong direction. Let’s get our sights set on heaven - and then run, run, run.
Self-Control
PRO 20:1
Wine is a mocker  .  .  .  whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.
Prov. 20:1
Recently in Akron, Ohio, three teenage college students were killed by a drunk man driving the wrong way on an interstate highway. He escaped injury and gave the excuse that he was unfamiliar with that section of the road! Alcohol not only interferes with our muscle control and judgment, but even worse, it weakens our self-control - the ability to say no to sin. Don’t even take the first drink! If you already did, don’t take another or you may ruin your life - and someone else’s - even if you are a Christian.
Integrity
PRO 4:23
Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.
Prov. 4:23
Chuck Colsen was once asked what three things were most needed by the church today. His answer?
“Integrity - integrity - integrity.”
We know of sad examples of prominent Christians who lacked integrity and ended up in public disgrace. How about you? Are you carefully guarding your heart?
Purity
JAM 1:21
Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness.
James 1:21
James is talking about moral evil and wickedness. Keep away from it! Don’t touch it! How easy it is to slip into immorality. How hard to get out. Make it a matter of special prayer that the Lord will help you to keep clear of evil and preserve you “blameless” until the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Worship
2CO 7:3
And when all  .  .  .  saw  .  .  .  the glory of the Lord  .  .  .  they  .  .  .  worshipped, and praised the Lord.
2 Chron. 7:3
Oh, that we each might see the glory of the Lord as we come to worship. Perhaps if we really saw we would really worship. And along with worship comes praise. Don’t forget why we meet together around the Lord today - to remember - and worship - and praise.
Service
1PE 4:9
Use hospitality one to another without grudging [complaining].
1 Pet. 4:9
This is a way to do the Lord’s service - in being hospitable. Be friendly to the lonely, invite others over for a meal. Take some young children to the zoo. There are many ways that you can show hospitality. Without grudging? This means that you’re not to get discouraged or complain because you never get thanked or your kindness is not returned. Don’t complain - the Lord will repay you - later.
Unfruitfulness
MAT 13:22
The care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful.
Matt. 13:22
Just the everyday cares of this life can choke the Word and make you unproductive in the Christian life. Let’s learn to cast all our cares on Jesus who cares very much for our happiness. Do what is your responsibility to your employer, or at school, but give yourself to God. Be a fruitful Christian.
Good Conscience
ACT 24:16
I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void of offense toward God, and toward men.
Acts 24:16
This is so important. Paul was very careful to KEEP a good conscience. So should we. Let’s get together with the Lord every day and confess the failures and sins and keep the “line” open at all times. Ask Him to help you live as a Christian should. Don’t forget He already knows everything you do and think. So you shouldn’t be afraid to confess and repent, asking Him to cleanse your heart and way, and KEEP you clean.
Reality
HEB 10:38
If any man draw back, My soul shall have no pleasure in him.
Heb. 10:38
It is not possible for someone who has truly believed on the Lord to lose their salvation. But it is possible, and happens, that one who only professed and didn’t believe in their heart will turn away and go back into the world. It is so important to be real and not just a tag-along. Be a true believer in the Lord Jesus Christ. Then when difficulties come He’ll be right there to help you. Those who are pretenders will find no comfort in time of trial and will turn back.
Fear
PRO 3:24
When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid.
Prov. 3:24
Are you afraid at night? Do you have fear of what tomorrow might bring? Are you afraid of someone at school? Are you afraid that you may be laid off? Just remember that you are not alone. God is with you. He told Joshua, “Be not afraid.” Nothing is too big for you to face with the Lord beside you. Was David afraid when he faced the giant? I don’t believe he had one fear. He had great confidence in God to help him through. Don’t be afraid. God is there.
End of Time
ROM 13:12
The night is far spent, the day is at hand.
Rom. 13:12
Okay, so you’ve heard all your life that Jesus is coming and He hasn’t come yet. But do you know why He hasn’t come? Because God’s giving everyone as much time as possible to believe the gospel. But time is running out. Jesus is just about ready to come. He really is! Are you watching for Him? Are you ready for Him? You’d better make sure of it today. Tomorrow, you may wake up and find all the Christians gone - and then it’ll be too late!
Worship
2CO 29:28
And all the congregation worshipped, and the singers sang.
2 Chron. 29:28
Our singing is sometimes not as good as we’d like. It sounds so draggy and slow. As we worship the Lord today and remember what He has done for us at the cross of Calvary, may our songs of praise sound like we really mean it. It’s up to you. Don’t blame anyone else if your heart’s not in it.
Service
JOH 13:15
For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.
John 13:15
What an example to follow! This was right before Calvary and the Lord was thinking of His disciples - not Himself. Even though we are facing difficulties we should be considerate of others and still willing to serve them. In so doing we are serving the Lord.
