Genesis 2
God had ended His great work, and so on the seventh day He rested. So God blessed it and called it the Sabbath or Rest Day. But now, sin has come into this world so Jesus said, “My Father worketh hitherto, and I work” (
John 5:17
17
But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work. (John 5:17)
). Why do Christians gather for worship on the First Day of the week? Because the Lord Jesus rose from the dead on the First Day.
The First Man’s Family
You remember God created the world by His word, but “The Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. And the Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there He put the man whom He had formed.” The Lord God made beautiful trees and fruit for food and the Tree of Life in the middle of the garden. Also there was the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. “A river went out of Eden to water the garden” (
Gen. 2:7-10
7
And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
8
And the Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed.
9
And out of the ground made the Lord God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.
10
And a river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from thence it was parted, and became into four heads. (Genesis 2:7‑10)
). The Lord God put the man Adam in the garden to dress it and keep it. “The Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die. And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.” The Lord God made him sleep, and took out one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh. The Lord God used the rib bone of the man to make a woman. He brought her to the man, and Adam said: “This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.” So a man should leave his father and mother and cling closely to his wife: the two shall be one. What a wonderful way for God to make the first man and woman! Just so, the Lord Jesus, “the last Adam” to get His bride went into a “deep sleep,” that means, He died on the cross. “Christ loved the church, and gave Himself for it.” This is a deep secret. See
Ephesians 5:23-32
23
For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.
24
Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.
25
Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;
26
That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,
27
That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.
28
So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.
29
For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church:
30
For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.
31
For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.
32
This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church. (Ephesians 5:23‑32)
