The formation of things which had no previous existence. Rom. 4:17¹⁷(As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were. (Romans 4:17), with Heb. 11:3³Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear. (Hebrews 11:3).

EFFECTED

By God. Gen. 1:1¹In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. (Genesis 1:1). Gen. 2:4, 5⁴These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens, ⁵And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew: for the Lord God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground. (Genesis 2:4‑5). Prov. 26:10¹⁰The great God that formed all things both rewardeth the fool, and rewardeth transgressors. (Proverbs 26:10).

By Christ. John 1:3, 10³All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. (John 1:3)
¹⁰He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. (John 1:10). Col. 1:16¹⁶For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: (Colossians 1:16).

By the Holy Ghost. Job 26:13¹³By his spirit he hath garnished the heavens; his hand hath formed the crooked serpent. (Job 26:13). Psa. 104:30³⁰Thou sendest forth thy spirit, they are created: and thou renewest the face of the earth. (Psalm 104:30).

By the command of God. Psa. 33:9⁹For he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast. (Psalm 33:9). Heb. 11:3³Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear. (Hebrews 11:3).

In the beginning. Gen. 1:1¹In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. (Genesis 1:1). Matt. 24:21²¹For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. (Matthew 24:21).

In six days. Ex. 20:11¹¹For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it. (Exodus 20:11) Ex. 31:17¹⁷It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever: for in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed. (Exodus 31:17).

According to God's purpose. Psa. 135:6⁶Whatsoever the Lord pleased, that did he in heaven, and in earth, in the seas, and all deep places. (Psalm 135:6).

For God's pleasure. Prov. 16:4⁴The Lord hath made all things for himself: yea, even the wicked for the day of evil. (Proverbs 16:4). Rev. 4:11¹¹Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created. (Revelation 4:11).

For Christ. Col. 1:16¹⁶For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: (Colossians 1:16).

By faith we believe, to be God's work. Heb. 11:3³Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear. (Hebrews 11:3).

ORDER OF

First day, making light and dividing it from darkness. Gen. 1:3³And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. (Genesis 1:3)-S. 2 Cor. 4:6⁶For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. (2 Corinthians 4:6).

Second day, making the firmament or atmosphere, and separating the waters. Gen. 1:6-8⁶And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters. ⁷And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so. ⁸And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day. (Genesis 1:6‑8).

Third day, separating the land from the water, and making it fruitful. Gen. 1:9-13⁹And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so. ¹⁰And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good. ¹¹And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so. ¹²And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good. ¹³And the evening and the morning were the third day. (Genesis 1:9‑13).

Fourth day, placing the sun, moon, and stars to give light, &c. Gen. 1:14-19¹⁴And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: ¹⁵And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so. ¹⁶And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also. ¹⁷And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth, ¹⁸And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good. ¹⁹And the evening and the morning were the fourth day. (Genesis 1:14‑19).

Fifth day, making birds, insects, and fishes. Gen. 1:20-23²⁰And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven. ²¹And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good. ²²And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth. ²³And the evening and the morning were the fifth day. (Genesis 1:20‑23).

Sixth day, making beasts of the earth, and man. Gen. 1:24, 28²⁴And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so. (Genesis 1:24)
²⁸And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth. (Genesis 1:28).

God rested from, on the seventh day. Gen. 2:2, 3²And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. ³And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made. (Genesis 2:2‑3).

Approved of by God. Gen. 1:31³¹And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day. (Genesis 1:31).

A subject of joy to angels. Job 38:7⁷When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy? (Job 38:7).

EXHIBITS

The deity of God. Rom. 1:20²⁰For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: (Romans 1:20).

The power of God. Isa. 40:26, 28²⁶Lift up your eyes on high, and behold who hath created these things, that bringeth out their host by number: he calleth them all by names by the greatness of his might, for that he is strong in power; not one faileth. (Isaiah 40:26)
²⁸Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding. (Isaiah 40:28). Rom. 1:20²⁰For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: (Romans 1:20).

The glory and handiwork of God. Psa. 19:1¹<<To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.>> The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament showeth his handywork. (Psalm 19:1).

The wisdom of God. Psa. 104:24²⁴O Lord, how manifold are thy works! in wisdom hast thou made them all: the earth is full of thy riches. (Psalm 104:24). Psa. 136:5⁵To him that by wisdom made the heavens: for his mercy endureth for ever. (Psalm 136:5).

The goodness of God. Psa. 33:5⁵He loveth righteousness and judgment: the earth is full of the goodness of the Lord. (Psalm 33:5).

God as the sole object of worship. Isa. 45:16¹⁶They shall be ashamed, and also confounded, all of them: they shall go to confusion together that are makers of idols. (Isaiah 45:16), with 18 v. Acts 17:24, 27²⁴God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands; (Acts 17:24)
²⁷That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us: (Acts 17:27).

Glorifies God. Psa. 145:10¹⁰All thy works shall praise thee, O Lord; and thy saints shall bless thee. (Psalm 145:10). Psa. 148:5⁵Let them praise the name of the Lord: for he commanded, and they were created. (Psalm 148:5).

God to be praised for. Neh. 9:6⁶Thou, even thou, art Lord alone; thou hast made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth, and all things that are therein, the seas, and all that is therein, and thou preservest them all; and the host of heaven worshippeth thee. (Nehemiah 9:6). Psa. 136:3-9³O give thanks to the Lord of lords: for his mercy endureth for ever. ⁴To him who alone doeth great wonders: for his mercy endureth for ever. ⁵To him that by wisdom made the heavens: for his mercy endureth for ever. ⁶To him that stretched out the earth above the waters: for his mercy endureth for ever. ⁷To him that made great lights: for his mercy endureth for ever: ⁸The sun to rule by day: for his mercy endureth for ever: ⁹The moon and stars to rule by night: for his mercy endureth for ever. (Psalm 136:3‑9).

Leads to confidence. Psa. 124:8⁸Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth. (Psalm 124:8). Psa. 146:5, 6⁵Happy is he that hath the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the Lord his God: ⁶Which made heaven, and earth, the sea, and all that therein is: which keepeth truth for ever: (Psalm 146:5‑6).

Insignificance of man seen from. Psa. 8:3, 4³When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; ⁴What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him? (Psalm 8:3‑4). Isa. 40:12, 17¹²Who hath measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, and meted out heaven with the span, and comprehended the dust of the earth in a measure, and weighed the mountains in scales, and the hills in a balance? (Isaiah 40:12)
¹⁷All nations before him are as nothing; and they are counted to him less than nothing, and vanity. (Isaiah 40:17).

Groaneth because of sin. Rom. 8:22²²For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now. (Romans 8:22).

ILLUSTRATIVE OF

The new birth. 2 Cor. 5:17¹⁷Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. (2 Corinthians 5:17). Eph. 2:10¹⁰For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. (Ephesians 2:10).

Daily renewal of saints. Psa. 51: 40. Eph. 4:24²⁴And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. (Ephesians 4:24).

Renewal of the earth. Isa. 65:17¹⁷For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind. (Isaiah 65:17). 2 Peter 3:11, 13¹¹Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness, (2 Peter 3:11)
¹³Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness. (2 Peter 3:13).
