Zephaniah means “Jehovah hath hidden” (
Psa. 27:5
5
For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock. (Psalm 27:5)
).
V.2-3 God pronounces a general judgment on all who disobeyed Him, both Jews and Gentiles.
V.4-6 Judah’s judgment is singled out, because they had been specially blessed by the Lord and now they were doing the same wicked things as the Gentile nations. They had turned “back from the Lord” (Read
Heb. 10:38

Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him. (Hebrews 10:38)
).
V.7 God tells that He has prepared a sacrifice, the Lord on the cross, and is inviting guests — future glories on the earth.
V.8 Notice “strange apparel.” Today we can see the same thing in the weird clothes people are wearing. Read

When I saw among the spoils a goodly Babylonish garment, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, then I coveted them, and took them; and, behold, they are hid in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it. (Joshua 7:21)

Ezekiel 23:12

She doted upon the Assyrians her neighbors, captains and rulers clothed most gorgeously, horsemen riding upon horses, all of them desirable young men. (Ezekiel 23:12)

V.12 The Lord will search out all their wickedness.
V.14-17 This is referring to the time of the great tribulation.
V.18 All their wealth won’t buy an escape from the punishment coming for this world.
