Put them in mind . . . to speak evil of no man.
Evil speaking or slander is so easy to do. You get talking with a group of friends and before you know it you’re discussing someone and perhaps saying unkind things about them, even malicious gossip. Sure, there are people that we naturally don’t get along with or are not close to, but that’s no reason to speak evil of them. But our verse goes much farther than that. It tells us to speak no evil of anybody, whether we know them or not. Turn away from gossip-mongers and speak only those things that edify (or build up).
