This is a day of lawlessness in thought as well as in act. People give the free rein to their imaginations and foolish reasonings (which seems to be the meaning of the word
inventions
in
Eccl. 7:29
29
Lo, this only have I found, that God hath made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions. (Ecclesiastes 7:29)
), and to this our attention should be directed, not in the way of answering them by counter-reasonings, but by seeking to reach the heart’s affections and the conscience as to what is due to God and to Christ.
