WHAT is it? It is found in the excellency of the Person trusted, not the merit of the person trusting. Take a simple figure. A genuine English sovereign is declared, in the King’s name, to be worth twenty shillings; and no matter who presents it at the Bank, he is entitled to receive the full value of it—young or old, black or white, learned or ignorant, English or foreign. It is the quality of the coin trusted, not the merit of the person presenting it, which determines the amount to be received; the most trembling is as welcome to it as the boldest. Each has the same title to receive twenty shillings for the genuine sovereign trusted. And it is on this principle that eternal blessings are being dispensed today. It is not now a matter of what we justly deserve. On the cross the blessed Redeemer bore that and said, “It is finished.” It is now God’s delight to bless believers according to what He thinks Jesus is worthy of; and as He is worthy of a place on His Father’s throne, those who trust Him will in the coming day be seen sitting with Him on His own throne.
When a man’s eyes are opened to see this, every thought of improving his title is banished Forever.
Take note, reader, of one thing. If your title to heaven could in any way be improved, it is certainly not Christ that you are trusting; for who dare to say that He could be improved? Such a thought would be an insult to the God Who sent Him, as well as to His beloved sent One; Who suffered for sins, the Just for the unjust, to bring us to God. He would have us as fit for His holy presence as the Saviour Himself! It is the writer’s joy to say and sing, ―
“I stand upon His merit,
I know no other stand.
Not e’en where glory dwelleth
In Immanuel’s land.”
“On Christ the solid Rock I stand;
All other ground is sinking sand.”
Does the reader rest on the same foundation?
