Find mercy in God. Hos. 14:3³Asshur shall not save us; we will not ride upon horses: neither will we say any more to the work of our hands, Ye are our gods: for in thee the fatherless findeth mercy. (Hosea 14:3).

GOD WILL

Be a father of. Psa. 68:5⁵A father of the fatherless, and a judge of the widows, is God in his holy habitation. (Psalm 68:5).

Be a helper of. Psa. 10:14¹⁴Thou hast seen it; for thou beholdest mischief and spite, to requite it with thy hand: the poor committeth himself unto thee; thou art the helper of the fatherless. (Psalm 10:14).

Hear the cry of. Ex. 22:23²³If thou afflict them in any wise, and they cry at all unto me, I will surely hear their cry; (Exodus 22:23).

Execute the judgment of. Deu. 10:18. Psa. 10:18¹⁸To judge the fatherless and the oppressed, that the man of the earth may no more oppress. (Psalm 10:18).

Punish those who oppress. Exo. 22:24²⁴And my wrath shall wax hot, and I will kill you with the sword; and your wives shall be widows, and your children fatherless. (Exodus 22:24). Isa. 10:1-3¹Woe unto them that decree unrighteous decrees, and that write grievousness which they have prescribed; ²To turn aside the needy from judgment, and to take away the right from the poor of my people, that widows may be their prey, and that they may rob the fatherless! ³And what will ye do in the day of visitation, and in the desolation which shall come from far? to whom will ye flee for help? and where will ye leave your glory? (Isaiah 10:1‑3). Mal. 3:5⁵And I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against false swearers, and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the stranger from his right, and fear not me, saith the Lord of hosts. (Malachi 3:5).

Punish those who judge not. Jer. 5:28, 29²⁸They are waxen fat, they shine: yea, they overpass the deeds of the wicked: they judge not the cause, the cause of the fatherless, yet they prosper; and the right of the needy do they not judge. ²⁹Shall I not visit for these things? saith the Lord: shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this? (Jeremiah 5:28‑29).

Visit in affliction. James 1:27²⁷Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world. (James 1:27).

Let them share in our blessings. Deut. 14:29²⁹And the Levite, (because he hath no part nor inheritance with thee,) and the stranger, and the fatherless, and the widow, which are within thy gates, shall come, and shall eat and be satisfied; that the Lord thy God may bless thee in all the work of thine hand which thou doest. (Deuteronomy 14:29).

Defend. Psa. 82:3³Defend the poor and fatherless: do justice to the afflicted and needy. (Psalm 82:3). Isa. 1:17¹⁷Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow. (Isaiah 1:17).

Wrong not, in judgment. Deut. 24:17¹⁷Thou shalt not pervert the judgment of the stranger, nor of the fatherless; nor take a widow's raiment to pledge: (Deuteronomy 24:17).

Defraud not. Prov. 23:10¹⁰Remove not the old landmark; and enter not into the fields of the fatherless: (Proverbs 23:10).

Afflict not. Ex. 22:22²²Ye shall not afflict any widow, or fatherless child. (Exodus 22:22).

Oppress not. Zech. 7:10¹⁰And oppress not the widow, nor the fatherless, the stranger, nor the poor; and let none of you imagine evil against his brother in your heart. (Zechariah 7:10).

Do no violence to. Jer. 22:3³Thus saith the Lord; Execute ye judgment and righteousness, and deliver the spoiled out of the hand of the oppressor: and do no wrong, do no violence to the stranger, the fatherless, nor the widow, neither shed innocent blood in this place. (Jeremiah 22:3).

Blessedness of taking care of. Deu. 14:29. Job 29:12, 13¹²Because I delivered the poor that cried, and the fatherless, and him that had none to help him. ¹³The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me: and I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy. (Job 29:12‑13). Jer. 7:6, 7⁶If ye oppress not the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, and shed not innocent blood in this place, neither walk after other gods to your hurt: ⁷Then will I cause you to dwell in this place, in the land that I gave to your fathers, for ever and ever. (Jeremiah 7:6‑7).

THE WICKED

Rob. Isa. 10:2²To turn aside the needy from judgment, and to take away the right from the poor of my people, that widows may be their prey, and that they may rob the fatherless! (Isaiah 10:2).

Overwhelm. Job 6:27²⁷Yea, ye overwhelm the fatherless, and ye dig a pit for your friend. (Job 6:27).

Vex. Ezek. 22:7⁷In thee have they set light by father and mother: in the midst of thee have they dealt by oppression with the stranger: in thee have they vexed the fatherless and the widow. (Ezekiel 22:7).

Oppress. Job 24:3³They drive away the ass of the fatherless, they take the widow's ox for a pledge. (Job 24:3).

Murder. Psa. 94:6⁶They slay the widow and the stranger, and murder the fatherless. (Psalm 94:6).

Judge not for. Isa. 1:23²³Thy princes are rebellious, and companions of thieves: every one loveth gifts, and followeth after rewards: they judge not the fatherless, neither doth the cause of the widow come unto them. (Isaiah 1:23). Jer. 5:28²⁸They are waxen fat, they shine: yea, they overpass the deeds of the wicked: they judge not the cause, the cause of the fatherless, yet they prosper; and the right of the needy do they not judge. (Jeremiah 5:28).

A curse on those who oppress. Deu. 27:19.

Promises with respect to. Jer. 49:11¹¹Leave thy fatherless children, I will preserve them alive; and let thy widows trust in me. (Jeremiah 49:11).

A type of Zion in affliction. Lam. 5:3³We are orphans and fatherless, our mothers are as widows. (Lamentations 5:3).

Exemplified. Lot, Gen. 11:27, 28²⁷Now these are the generations of Terah: Terah begat Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran begat Lot. ²⁸And Haran died before his father Terah in the land of his nativity, in Ur of the Chaldees. (Genesis 11:27‑28).

Daughter of Zelophehad, Num. 27:1-5¹Then came the daughters of Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of Manasseh the son of Joseph: and these are the names of his daughters; Mahlah, Noah, and Hoglah, and Milcah, and Tirzah. ²And they stood before Moses, and before Eleazar the priest, and before the princes and all the congregation, by the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, saying, ³Our father died in the wilderness, and he was not in the company of them that gathered themselves together against the Lord in the company of Korah; but died in his own sin, and had no sons. ⁴Why should the name of our father be done away from among his family, because he hath no son?
