Joshua 3:4
“There shall be a space between you and it, about two thousand cubits by measure; come not near unto it, that ye may know the way by which ye must go: for ye have not passed this way heretofore” —
Joshua 3:4
4
Yet there shall be a space between you and it, about two thousand cubits by measure: come not near unto it, that ye may know the way by which ye must go: for ye have not passed this way heretofore. (Joshua 3:4)
.
THE ark going down into the Jordan pictured our blessed Saviour going into the dark waters of judgment for us. He had to go on alone, none could share with Him in the work of making expiation of iniquity. Just as the people of Israel waited until there was a space of two thousand cubits between them and the ark, and did not enter the river-bed till the floods were rolled back, so we, who had no part in the atonement, now obtain the benefit of that death which Jesus endured alone in order that we might be saved. We could only look on in awe-struck silence as He took our place and bore our penalty.
“Alone He bare the cross,
Alone its grief sustained.
His was the shame and loss,
And He the victory gained;
The mighty work was all His own,
Tho’ we shall share His glorious throne.”
―Swain.
