Fountains and Springs.

Created by God. Psa. 74:15¹⁵Thou didst cleave the fountain and the flood: thou driedst up mighty rivers. (Psalm 74:15). Psa. 104:10¹⁰He sendeth the springs into the valleys, which run among the hills. (Psalm 104:10).

God to be praised for. Rev. 14:7⁷Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters. (Revelation 14:7).

Come from the great deep. Gen. 7:11¹¹In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened. (Genesis 7:11). Job 38:16¹⁶Hast thou entered into the springs of the sea? or hast thou walked in the search of the depth? (Job 38:16).

Found in hills and valleys. Deu. S: 7. Psa. 104:10¹⁰He sendeth the springs into the valleys, which run among the hills. (Psalm 104:10).

Send forth each but one kind of water. James 3:11¹¹Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter? (James 3:11).

AFFORD

Drink to the beasts. Psa. 104:11¹¹They give drink to every beast of the field: the wild asses quench their thirst. (Psalm 104:11).

Refreshment to the birds. Psa. 104:12¹²By them shall the fowls of the heaven have their habitation, which sing among the branches. (Psalm 104:12).

Fruitfulness to the earth. 1 Kin. 18:5. Joel 3:18¹⁸And it shall come to pass in that day, that the mountains shall drop down new wine, and the hills shall flow with milk, and all the rivers of Judah shall flow with waters, and a fountain shall come forth of the house of the Lord, and shall water the valley of Shittim. (Joel 3:18).

Frequented by travelers. Gen. 16:7⁷And the angel of the Lord found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur. (Genesis 16:7).

Abound in Canaan. Deut. 8:7⁷For the Lord thy God bringeth thee into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and depths that spring out of valleys and hills; (Deuteronomy 8:7). 1 Kin. 18:5.

Sometimes dried up. Isa. 58:11¹¹And the Lord shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not. (Isaiah 58:11).

Drying up of, a severe punishment. Psa. 107:33, 34³³He turneth rivers into a wilderness, and the watersprings into dry ground; ³⁴A fruitful land into barrenness, for the wickedness of them that dwell therein. (Psalm 107:33‑34). Hos. 13:15¹⁵Though he be fruitful among his brethren, an east wind shall come, the wind of the Lord shall come up from the wilderness, and his spring shall become dry, and his fountain shall be dried up: he shall spoil the treasure of all pleasant vessels. (Hosea 13:15).

CONSTANTLY FLOWING

Especially esteemed. Isa. 58:11¹¹And the Lord shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not. (Isaiah 58:11).

Could not be ceremonially defiled. Lev. 11:36³⁶Nevertheless a fountain or pit, wherein there is plenty of water, shall be clean: but that which toucheth their carcase shall be unclean. (Leviticus 11:36).

Sometimes stopped or turned off to distress enemies. 2 Chr. 32:3, 4³He took counsel with his princes and his mighty men to stop the waters of the fountains which were without the city: and they did help him. ⁴So there was gathered much people together, who stopped all the fountains, and the brook that ran through the midst of the land, saying, Why should the kings of Assyria come, and find much water? (2 Chronicles 32:3‑4).

MENTIONED IN SCRIPTURE

In the way to Shur. Gen. 16:7⁷And the angel of the Lord found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur. (Genesis 16:7).

Of the waters of Nephtoah. Josh. 15:9⁹And the border was drawn from the top of the hill unto the fountain of the water of Nephtoah, and went out to the cities of mount Ephron; and the border was drawn to Baalah, which is Kirjath-jearim: (Joshua 15:9).

Of Jezreel. 1 Sam. 29:1¹Now the Philistines gathered together all their armies to Aphek: and the Israelites pitched by a fountain which is in Jezreel. (1 Samuel 29:1).

Of Pisgah. Deut. 4:49⁴⁹And all the plain on this side Jordan eastward, even unto the sea of the plain, under the springs of Pisgah. (Deuteronomy 4:49).

Upper and nether springs. Josh. 15:19¹⁹Who answered, Give me a blessing; for thou hast given me a south land; give me also springs of water. And he gave her the upper springs, and the nether springs. (Joshua 15:19). Judg. 1:15¹⁵And she said unto him, Give me a blessing: for thou hast given me a south land; give me also springs of water. And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the nether springs. (Judges 1:15).

ILLUSTRATIVE

Of God. Psa. 36:9⁹For with thee is the fountain of life: in thy light shall we see light. (Psalm 36:9). Jer. 2:13¹³For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water. (Jeremiah 2:13). Jer. 17:13¹³O Lord, the hope of Israel, all that forsake thee shall be ashamed, and they that depart from me shall be written in the earth, because they have forsaken the Lord, the fountain of living waters. (Jeremiah 17:13).

Of Christ. Zech. 13:1¹In that day there shall be a fountain opened to the house of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem for sin and for uncleanness. (Zechariah 13:1).

Of the Holy Ghost. John 7:38, 39³⁸He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. ³⁹(But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.) (John 7:38‑39).

Of constant supplies of grace. Psa. 87:7⁷As well the singers as the players on instruments shall be there: all my springs are in thee. (Psalm 87:7).

Of eternal life. John 4:14¹⁴But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life. (John 4:14). Rev. 21:6⁶And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely. (Revelation 21:6).

Of the means of grace. Isa. 41:18¹⁸I will open rivers in high places, and fountains in the midst of the valleys: I will make the wilderness a pool of water, and the dry land springs of water. (Isaiah 41:18). Joel 3:18¹⁸And it shall come to pass in that day, that the mountains shall drop down new wine, and the hills shall flow with milk, and all the rivers of Judah shall flow with waters, and a fountain shall come forth of the house of the Lord, and shall water the valley of Shittim. (Joel 3:18).

Of a good wife. Prov. 5:18¹⁸Let thy fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of thy youth. (Proverbs 5:18).

Of a numerous posterity. Deut. 33:28²⁸Israel then shall dwell in safety alone: the fountain of Jacob shall be upon a land of corn and wine; also his heavens shall drop down dew. (Deuteronomy 33:28).

Of spiritual wisdom. Prov. 16:22²²Understanding is a wellspring of life unto him that hath it: but the instruction of fools is folly. (Proverbs 16:22). Prov. 18:4⁴The words of a man's mouth are as deep waters, and the wellspring of wisdom as a flowing brook. (Proverbs 18:4).

Of the law of the wise. Prov. 13:14¹⁴The law of the wise is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death. (Proverbs 13:14).

Of godly fear. Prov. 14:27²⁷The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death. (Proverbs 14:27).

(Sealed up) of the church. SoS. 4:12.

(Not failing) of the church. Isa. 58:11¹¹And the Lord shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not. (Isaiah 58:11).

(Always flowing) of unceasing wickedness of the Jews. Jer. 6:7⁷As a fountain casteth out her waters, so she casteth out her wickedness: violence and spoil is heard in her; before me continually is grief and wounds. (Jeremiah 6:7).

(Corrupt) of the natural heart. James 3:11¹¹Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter? (James 3:11), with Matt. 15:18, 19¹⁸But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man. ¹⁹For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies: (Matthew 15:18‑19).

(Troubled) of saints led astray. Prov. 25:26²⁶A righteous man falling down before the wicked is as a troubled fountain, and a corrupt spring. (Proverbs 25:26).
