Heavenly Grace: 1 Kings 19 to 2 Kings 4

"And he said, I have been very jealous for the Lord God of hosts: because the children of Israel have forsaken Thy covenant, thrown down Thine altars, and slain Thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away. And the Lord said unto him, Go, return on thy way to the wilderness of Damascus: and when thou comest, anoint Hazael to be king over Syria: And Jehu the son of Nimshi shalt thou anoint to be king over Israel: and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abelmeholah shalt thou anoint to be prophet in thy room. And it shall come to pass, that him that escapeth the sword of Hazael shall Jehu slay: and him that escapeth from the sword of Jehu shall Elisha slay. A marvelous change took place in the life of Elijah. He learned that the breaking of the will (repentance) was a great means of opening the understanding. Elisha, too, learned the lesson of repentance and passed from Elijah's lost commission of restoring Israel to the law to the happy position of being a type of a dead, risen and glorified Christ.
"Now it was not written for his sake alone, that it was imputed to him; but for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on Him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead; who was delivered for our offenses, and was raised again for our justification." Elijah and Elisha are brought before us by the Lord Jesus Himself in the Gospel of Luke.
"But I tell you of a truth, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elias [Elijah], when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when great famine was throughout all the land; but unto none of them was Elias sent, save unto Sarepta, a city of Sidon, unto a woman that was a widow. And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Eliseus [Elisha] the prophet; and none of them was cleansed, saving Naaman the Syrian." From the lives of Elijah and Elisha we can learn two ministries of the Lord Jesus. Elijah sets forth His earthly ministry calling for repentance, and Elisha opens to us the character of the new ministry, which is especially to the Gentiles and is after the Lord Jesus is risen and has returned to heaven. This ministry He committed to the Apostle Paul.
