OF course I believe the Bible: do you think I am a heathen ?"
All right; since you say so, I will read you a few verses, beginning at Rom. 3:23,23For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; (Romans 3:23) All have sinned."
How sweeping are these three words from God—how universal. All, without exception. The degrees may differ, but the same fact governs all, and "the wages of sin is death" (Rom. 6:2323For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Romans 6:23)). So since you claim to believe the Bible, you won't mind me putting it thus, as you know you have sinned against God:
"Be sure your sin will find you out." Numbers 32:2323But if ye will not do so, behold, ye have sinned against the Lord: and be sure your sin will find you out. (Numbers 32:23). Find you out; yes, do not forget it. Every thought, idle word and deed must be given account of to a just God.
But here are other three words from that blessed Book,
"It is finished." John 19:3030When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost. (John 19:30). Blessed, precious, soul-emancipating words! Only 3 words, but, O their full meaning no tongue nor word can express; speaking volumes to the sin-sick soul. Do you believe these three words ? "It is finished". What do they mean?
"Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners."
What blessed news for sinners like you and me. "It is finished!" The work that saves is a finished work. God gave Him a work to do, the work of saving poor sinners, who were lost and undone, and He never turned aside until on Calvary He could cry triumphantly,
"IT IS FINISHED!"
"It is finished, yes indeed,
Finished every jot, Sinner,
this is all you need;
Tell me, is it not?"
No prayers, tears, or works of any kind can add to the work of Calvary's victim, Christ Jesus, Who now adorns the Throne of God.
"Till to Jesus' work you cling,
By a simple faith,
DOING is a deadly thing,
Doing ends in death."
"Away with doubts, away with fears,
When this by faith I know,
God's Word shall stand forevermore,
My Saviour tells me so."
Dear reader, can you say this from your heart ? I know with your tongue you may have said, "I believe the Bible," but can you say truthfully, when asked this question by the Lord's own Word, "Dost thou believe on the Son of God?"
"Lord, I believe. I believe that on Calvary Thou didst die for me a sinner, Thou hast borne my heavy load of sins; the judgment that was mine by right, fell on Thy sacred Head, and with Thy stripes I am healed. Lord, I believe! I believe!"
"If you can say these last three words from your heart, then 'it is well with thy soul,' and now like the once blind man, will you tell to others around you, One thing I KNOW, whereas I was lost, now I am saved, and this blessed assurance I obtained from where 'it is written' by the finger of God—the Bible, which I believe."
