We now meet Josiah, the king of Judah, ten years after he first started to reign. If you remember how old he was then, you will know that he is now 18. At this time in his life he did two very important and good things. We remember that he loved God and this is why he did these things.
The first thing he did was to hire carpenters and workmen to repair the “breaches” (holes in the wall) that were found in the house of God in Jerusalem. This house was called the “temple”. It is sad to learn that the people of God had let God’s house get into such a terrible condition. This happened, no doubt, because the people quit caring about the Lord.
During the time that the repair work was going on, the second thing happened. The book of the law (God’s Word to the Israelites) was found in the temple. Because the people had forgotten about God, they had also forgotten about His Word. But Josiah wanted to hear what God had to say and so he commanded that the law be read to him.
After we rest awhile as you look for these verses, we will see what Josiah learned from God’s Word.
