Casting or drawing of, a usual way of settling questions

Possibly marked pebbles were used, in a bag or box. Canaan was allotted to the tribes of Israel (Num. 26:55⁵⁵Notwithstanding the land shall be divided by lot: according to the names of the tribes of their fathers they shall inherit. (Numbers 26:55); Josh. 15; 19). Scapegoat so chosen (Lev. 16:8⁸And Aaron shall cast lots upon the two goats; one lot for the Lord, and the other lot for the scapegoat. (Leviticus 16:8)); priest’s courses (1 Chron. 24; 25), property divided (Matt. 27:35³⁵And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots. (Matthew 27:35)).
