Love to Man.

Is of God. 1 John 4:7⁷Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. (1 John 4:7).

Commanded by God. 1 John 4:21²¹And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also. (1 John 4:21).

Commanded by Christ. John 13:34³⁴A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. (John 13:34). John 15:12¹²This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. (John 15:12). 1 John 3:23²³And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment. (1 John 3:23).

After the example of Christ. John 13:34³⁴A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. (John 13:34). John 15:12¹²This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. (John 15:12). Eph. 5:2²And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savor. (Ephesians 5:2).

Taught by God. 1 The. 4:9.

Faith worketh by. Gal. 5:6⁶For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love. (Galatians 5:6).

A fruit of the Spirit. Gal. 5:22²²But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, (Galatians 5:22). Col. 1:8⁸Who also declared unto us your love in the Spirit. (Colossians 1:8).

Purity of heart leads to. 1 Peter 1:22²²Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently: (1 Peter 1:22).

Explained. 1 Cor. 13:4-7⁴Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, ⁵Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; ⁶Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; ⁷Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. (1 Corinthians 13:4‑7).

Is an active principle. 1 Thess. 1:3³Remembering without ceasing your work of faith, and labor of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, in the sight of God and our Father; (1 Thessalonians 1:3). Heb. 6:10¹⁰For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labor of love, which ye have showed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister. (Hebrews 6:10).

Is an abiding principle. 1 Cor. 13:8, 13⁸Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away. (1 Corinthians 13:8)
¹³And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity. (1 Corinthians 13:13).

Is the second great commandment. Matt. 22:37-39³⁷Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. ³⁸This is the first and great commandment. ³⁹And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. (Matthew 22:37‑39).

Is the end of the commandment. 1 Tim. 1:5⁵Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned: (1 Timothy 1:5).

Supernatural gifts are nothing without. 1 Cor. 13:1, 2¹Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. ²And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. (1 Corinthians 13:1‑2).

The greatest sacrifices are nothing without. 1 Cor. 13:3³And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing. (1 Corinthians 13:3).

Especially enjoined upon ministers. 1 Tim. 4:12¹²Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity. (1 Timothy 4:12). 2 Tim. 2:22²²Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart. (2 Timothy 2:22).

SAINTS SHOULD

Put on. Col. 3:14¹⁴And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness. (Colossians 3:14).

Follow after. 1 Cor. 14:1¹Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy. (1 Corinthians 14:1).

Abound in. Phi. 1:9. 1 Thess. 3:12¹²And the Lord make you to increase and abound in love one toward another, and toward all men, even as we do toward you: (1 Thessalonians 3:12).

Continue in. 1 Tim. 2:15¹⁵Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety. (1 Timothy 2:15). Heb. 13:1¹Let brotherly love continue. (Hebrews 13:1).

Provoke each other to. 2 Cor. 8:7⁷Therefore, as ye abound in every thing, in faith, and utterance, and knowledge, and in all diligence, and in your love to us, see that ye abound in this grace also. (2 Corinthians 8:7). 2 Cor. 9:2²For I know the forwardness of your mind, for which I boast of you to them of Macedonia, that Achaia was ready a year ago; and your zeal hath provoked very many. (2 Corinthians 9:2). Heb. 10:24²⁴And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: (Hebrews 10:24).

Be sincere in. Rom. 12:9⁹Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good. (Romans 12:9). 2 Cor. 6:6⁶By pureness, by knowledge, by longsuffering, by kindness, by the Holy Ghost, by love unfeigned, (2 Corinthians 6:6). 2 Cor. 8:8⁸I speak not by commandment, but by occasion of the forwardness of others, and to prove the sincerity of your love. (2 Corinthians 8:8). 1 John 3:18¹⁸My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth. (1 John 3:18).

Be disinterested in. 1 Cor. 10:24²⁴Let no man seek his own, but every man another's wealth. (1 Corinthians 10:24). 1 Cor. 13:5⁵Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; (1 Corinthians 13:5). Phi. 2:4.

Be fervent in. 1 Peter 1:22²²Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently: (1 Peter 1:22). 1 Peter 4:8⁸And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins. (1 Peter 4:8).

Should be connected with brotherly-kindness. Rom. 12:10¹⁰Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honor preferring one another; (Romans 12:10). 2 Peter 1:7⁷And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. (2 Peter 1:7).

Should be with a pure heart. 1 Pet. 1:22²²Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently: (1 Peter 1:22).

All things should be done with. 1 Cor. 16:14¹⁴Let all your things be done with charity. (1 Corinthians 16:14).

SHOULD BE EXHIBITED, TOWARD

Saints. 1 Peter 2:17¹⁷Honor all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king. (1 Peter 2:17). 1 John 5:1¹Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him. (1 John 5:1).

Ministers. 1 Thess. 5:13¹³And to esteem them very highly in love for their work's sake. And be at peace among yourselves. (1 Thessalonians 5:13).

Our families. Eph. 5:25²⁵Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; (Ephesians 5:25). Titus 2:4⁴That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, (Titus 2:4).

Fellow-countrymen. Ex. 32:32³²Yet now, if thou wilt forgive their sin; and if not, blot me, I pray thee, out of thy book which thou hast written. (Exodus 32:32). Rom. 9:2,3²That I have great heaviness and continual sorrow in my heart. ³For I could wish that myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh: (Romans 9:2‑3). Rom. 10:1¹Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved. (Romans 10:1).

Strangers. Lev. 19:34³⁴But the stranger that dwelleth with you shall be unto you as one born among you, and thou shalt love him as thyself; for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God. (Leviticus 19:34). Deut. 10:19¹⁹Love ye therefore the stranger: for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt. (Deuteronomy 10:19).

Enemies. Ex. 23:4, 5⁴If thou meet thine enemy's ox or his ass going astray, thou shalt surely bring it back to him again. ⁵If thou see the ass of him that hateth thee lying under his burden, and wouldest forbear to help him, thou shalt surely help with him. (Exodus 23:4‑5). 2 Kin. 6:22. Matt. 5:44⁴⁴But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; (Matthew 5:44). Rom. 12:14, 20¹⁴Bless them which persecute you: bless, and curse not. (Romans 12:14)
²⁰Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. (Romans 12:20). 1 Peter 3:9⁹Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing. (1 Peter 3:9).

All men. Gal. 6:10¹⁰As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith. (Galatians 6:10).

SHOULD BE EXHIBITED, IN

Ministering to the wants of others. Matt. 25:35³⁵For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: (Matthew 25:35). Heb. 6:10¹⁰For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labor of love, which ye have showed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister. (Hebrews 6:10).

Loving each other. Gal. 5:13¹³For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another. (Galatians 5:13).

Relieving strangers. Lev. 25:35³⁵And if thy brother be waxen poor, and fallen in decay with thee; then thou shalt relieve him: yea, though he be a stranger, or a sojourner; that he may live with thee. (Leviticus 25:35). Matt. 25:35³⁵For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: (Matthew 25:35).

Clothing the naked. Isa. 58:7⁷Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh? (Isaiah 58:7). Matt. 25:36³⁶Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. (Matthew 25:36).

Visiting the sick, &c. Job 31:1622. James 1:27²⁷Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world. (James 1:27).

Sympathizing. Rom. 12:15¹⁵Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep. (Romans 12:15). 1 Cor. 12:26²⁶And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honored, all the members rejoice with it. (1 Corinthians 12:26).

Supporting the weak. Gal. 6:2²Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ. (Galatians 6:2). 1 The. 5:14.

Covering the faults of others. Pro. 10:12¹²Hatred stirreth up strifes: but love covereth all sins. (Proverbs 10:12), with 1 Peter 4:8⁸And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins. (1 Peter 4:8).

Forgiving injuries. Eph. 4:32³²And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you. (Ephesians 4:32). Col. 3:13¹³Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. (Colossians 3:13).

Forbearing. Eph. 4:2²With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; (Ephesians 4:2).

Rebuking. Lev. 19:17¹⁷Thou shalt not hate thy brother in thine heart: thou shalt in any wise rebuke thy neighbor, and not suffer sin upon him. (Leviticus 19:17). Matt. 18:15¹⁵Moreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother. (Matthew 18:15)

Necessary to true happiness. Pro. 15:17¹⁷Better is a dinner of herbs where love is, than a stalled ox and hatred therewith. (Proverbs 15:17).

The love of God is a motive to. John 13:34³⁴A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. (John 13:34). 1 John 4:11¹¹Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another. (1 John 4:11).

AN EVIDENCE OF

Being in the light. 1 John 2:10¹⁰He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him. (1 John 2:10).

Discipleship with Christ. John 13:35³⁵By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another. (John 13:35).

Spiritual life. 1 John 3:14¹⁴We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death. (1 John 3:14).

Is the fulfilling of the law. Rom. 13:8-10⁸Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law. ⁹For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. ¹⁰Love worketh no ill to his neighbor: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law. (Romans 13:8‑10). Gal. 5:14¹⁴For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. (Galatians 5:14). James 2:8⁸If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself, ye do well: (James 2:8).

Love to self is the measure of. Mar. 12:33.

Is good and pleasant. Psa. 133:1, 2¹<<A Song of degrees of David.>> Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity! ²It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron's beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments; (Psalm 133:1‑2).

Is a bond of union. Col. 2:2²That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ; (Colossians 2:2).

Is the bond of perfectness. Col. 3:14¹⁴And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness. (Colossians 3:14).

Hypocrites, devoid of. 1 John 2:9, 11⁹He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now. (1 John 2:9)
¹¹But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes. (1 John 2:11). 1 John 4:20²⁰If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen? (1 John 4:20).

The wicked devoid of. 1 John 3:10¹⁰In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother. (1 John 3:10).

Exemplified. Joseph. Gen. 45:15¹⁵Moreover he kissed all his brethren, and wept upon them: and after that his brethren talked with him. (Genesis 45:15). Ruth, Ruth 1:16, 17¹⁶And Ruth said, Entreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God: ¹⁷Where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried: the Lord do so to me, and more also, if ought but death part thee and me. (Ruth 1:16‑17). Jonathan, &c. 1 Sam. 20:17, 41, 42¹⁷And Jonathan caused David to swear again, because he loved him: for he loved him as he loved his own soul. (1 Samuel 20:17)
⁴¹And as soon as the lad was gone, David arose out of a place toward the south, and fell on his face to the ground, and bowed himself three times: and they kissed one another, and wept one with another, until David exceeded. ⁴²And Jonathan said to David, Go in peace, forasmuch as we have sworn both of us in the name of the Lord, saying, The Lord be between me and thee, and between my seed and thy seed for ever. (2 Corinthians 6:11‑12). Epaphroditus, Phi. 2:25, 26, 30. Philippians, Phi. 4:15-19. Colossians, Col. 1:4⁴Since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus, and of the love which ye have to all the saints, (Colossians 1:4). Thessalonians, 1 Thess. 3:6⁶But now when Timotheus came from you unto us, and brought us good tidings of your faith and charity, and that ye have good remembrance of us always, desiring greatly to see us, as we also to see you: (1 Thessalonians 3:6). Onesiphorus, 2 Tim. 1:16-18¹⁶The Lord give mercy unto the house of Onesiphorus; for he oft refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain: ¹⁷But, when he was in Rome, he sought me out very diligently, and found me. ¹⁸The Lord grant unto him that he may find mercy of the Lord in that day: and in how many things he ministered unto me at Ephesus, thou knowest very well. (2 Timothy 1:16‑18). Philemon, Phile. 7-9. Moses, Heb. 11:25²⁵Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season; (Hebrews 11:25).
