Masters.

Authority of, established Col. 3:22²²Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God: (Colossians 3:22). 1 Peter 2:18¹⁸Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward. (1 Peter 2:18).

SHOULD, WITH THEIR HOUSEHOLDS,

Worship God. Gen. 35:3³And let us arise, and go up to Beth-el; and I will make there an altar unto God, who answered me in the day of my distress, and was with me in the way which I went. (Genesis 35:3).

Fear God. Acts 10:2²A devout man, and one that feared God with all his house, which gave much alms to the people, and prayed to God alway. (Acts 10:2).

Serve God. Josh. 24:15¹⁵And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. (Joshua 24:15).

Observe the Sabbath. Ex. 20:10¹⁰But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: (Exodus 20:10). Deut. 5:12-14¹²Keep the sabbath day to sanctify it, as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee. ¹³Six days thou shalt labor, and do all thy work: ¹⁴But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thine ox, nor thine ass, nor any of thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates; that thy manservant and thy maidservant may rest as well as thou. (Deuteronomy 5:12‑14).

Put away idols. Gen. 35:2²Then Jacob said unto his household, and to all that were with him, Put away the strange gods that are among you, and be clean, and change your garments: (Genesis 35:2).

Should select faithful servants. Gen, 24:2. Psa. 101:6, 7⁶Mine eyes shall be upon the faithful of the land, that they may dwell with me: he that walketh in a perfect way, he shall serve me. ⁷He that worketh deceit shall not dwell within my house: he that telleth lies shall not tarry in my sight. (Psalm 101:6‑7).

Should receive faithful advice from servants. 2 Kin. 5:13, 14.

DUTY OF, TOWARD SERVANTS;

To act justly. Job 31:13,15¹³If I did despise the cause of my manservant or of my maidservant, when they contended with me; (Job 31:13)
¹⁵Did not he that made me in the womb make him? and did not one fashion us in the womb? (Job 31:15). Col, 4:1.

To deal with them in the fear of God. Eph. 6:9⁹And, ye masters, do the same things unto them, forbearing threatening: knowing that your Master also is in heaven; neither is there respect of persons with him. (Ephesians 6:9). Col: 4:1.

To esteem them highly, if saints. Phile. 16.

To take care of them in sickness. Luke 7:3³And when he heard of Jesus, he sent unto him the elders of the Jews, beseeching him that he would come and heal his servant. (Luke 7:3).

To forbear threatening them. Eph. 6:9⁹And, ye masters, do the same things unto them, forbearing threatening: knowing that your Master also is in heaven; neither is there respect of persons with him. (Ephesians 6:9).

Not to defraud them. Gen. 31:7⁷And your father hath deceived me, and changed my wages ten times; but God suffered him not to hurt me. (Genesis 31:7).

Not to keep back their wages. Lev. 19:13¹³Thou shalt not defraud thy neighbor, neither rob him: the wages of him that is hired shall not abide with thee all night until the morning. (Leviticus 19:13). Deut. 24:15¹⁵At his day thou shalt give him his hire, neither shall the sun go down upon it; for he is poor, and setteth his heart upon it: lest he cry against thee unto the Lord, and it be sin unto thee. (Deuteronomy 24:15).

Not to rule over them with rigor. Lev. 25:43⁴³Thou shalt not rule over him with rigor; but shalt fear thy God. (Leviticus 25:43). Deut. 24:14¹⁴Thou shalt not oppress an hired servant that is poor and needy, whether he be of thy brethren, or of thy strangers that are in thy land within thy gates: (Deuteronomy 24:14).

Benevolent, blessed. Deut. 15:18¹⁸It shall not seem hard unto thee, when thou sendest him away free from thee; for he hath been worth a double hired servant to thee, in serving thee six years: and the Lord thy God shall bless thee in all that thou doest. (Deuteronomy 15:18).

Unjust, denounced. Jer. 22:13¹³Woe unto him that buildeth his house by unrighteousness, and his chambers by wrong; that useth his neighbor's service without wages, and giveth him not for his work; (Jeremiah 22:13). Jas. 5:4⁴Behold, the hire of the laborers who have reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth: and the cries of them which have reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord of sabaoth. (James 5:4).

Good-Exemplified. Abraham, Gen. 18:19¹⁹For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the Lord, to do justice and judgment; that the Lord may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him. (Genesis 18:19). Bad—Exemplified. Egyptians, Ex. 1:13,14¹³And the Egyptians made the children of Israel to serve with rigor: ¹⁴And they made their lives bitter with hard bondage, in mortar, and in brick, and in all manner of service in the field: all their service, wherein they made them serve, was with rigor. (Exodus 1:13‑14). Nabal, 1 Sam. 25:17 Amalekite, 1 Sam. 30:13.
