(prophet). (1) A mountain of Moab, whence Moses viewed the promised land (Deut. 32:49; 34:1⁴⁹Get thee up into this mountain Abarim, unto mount Nebo, which is in the land of Moab, that is over against Jericho; and behold the land of Canaan, which I give unto the children of Israel for a possession: (Deuteronomy 32:49)
¹And Moses went up from the plains of Moab unto the mountain of Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, that is over against Jericho. And the Lord showed him all the land of Gilead, unto Dan, (Deuteronomy 34:1)). (2) A Reubenite city (Num. 32:3,38; 33:47³Ataroth, and Dibon, and Jazer, and Nimrah, and Heshbon, and Elealeh, and Shebam, and Nebo, and Beon, (Numbers 32:3)
³⁸And Nebo, and Baal-meon, (their names being changed,) and Shibmah: and gave other names unto the cities which they builded. (Numbers 32:38)
⁴⁷And they removed from Almon-diblathaim, and pitched in the mountains of Abarim, before Nebo. (Numbers 33:47)). (3) Father of returned captives (Ezra 2:29²⁹The children of Nebo, fifty and two. (Ezra 2:29)). (4) A Chaldean god, presiding over learning. Counterpart of the Greek Hermes (Isa. 46:1¹Bel boweth down, Nebo stoopeth, their idols were upon the beasts, and upon the cattle: your carriages were heavy loaden; they are a burden to the weary beast. (Isaiah 46:1); Jer. 48:1¹Against Moab thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Woe unto Nebo! for it is spoiled: Kiriathaim is confounded and taken: Misgab is confounded and dismayed. (Jeremiah 48:1)).
