Night.

The darkness first called. Gen. 1:5⁵And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day. (Genesis 1:5).

Caused by God. Psa. 104:20²⁰Thou makest darkness, and it is night: wherein all the beasts of the forest do creep forth. (Psalm 104:20).

Belongs to God. Psa. 75:16.

The heavenly bodies designed to separate day from. Gen. 1:14¹⁴And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: (Genesis 1:14).

The moon and stars designed to rule and given light by. Gen. 1:16-18¹⁶And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also. ¹⁷And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth, ¹⁸And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good. (Genesis 1:16‑18). Jer. 31:35³⁵Thus saith the Lord, which giveth the sun for a light by day, and the ordinances of the moon and of the stars for a light by night, which divideth the sea when the waves thereof roar; The Lord of hosts is his name: (Jeremiah 31:35).

Commenced at sunset. Gen. 28:11¹¹And he lighted upon a certain place, and tarried there all night, because the sun was set; and he took of the stones of that place, and put them for his pillows, and lay down in that place to sleep. (Genesis 28:11).

Continued until sunrise. Psa. 104:22²²The sun ariseth, they gather themselves together, and lay them down in their dens. (Psalm 104:22). Matt. 28:1¹In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre. (Matthew 28:1), with Mar. 16:2.

REGULAR SUCCESSIONS OF,

Established by covenant. Gen. 8:22²²While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease. (Genesis 8:22). Jer. 33:20²⁰Thus saith the Lord; If ye can break my covenant of the day, and my covenant of the night, and that there should not be day and night in their season; (Jeremiah 33:20).

Ordained for the glory of God. Psa. 19:2²Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night showeth knowledge. (Psalm 19:2).

Originally divided into three watches. Lam. 2:19¹⁹Arise, cry out in the night: in the beginning of the watches pour out thine heart like water before the face of the Lord: lift up thy hands toward him for the life of thy young children, that faint for hunger in the top of every street. (Lamentations 2:19), with Judg. 7:19¹⁹So Gideon, and the hundred men that were with him, came unto the outside of the camp in the beginning of the middle watch; and they had but newly set the watch: and they blew the trumpets, and brake the pitchers that were in their hands. (Judges 7:19). Ex. 14:24²⁴And it came to pass, that in the morning watch the Lord looked unto the host of the Egyptians through the pillar of fire and of the cloud, and troubled the host of the Egyptians, (Exodus 14:24).

Divided into four watches by the Romans. Luke 12:38³⁸And if he shall come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find them so, blessed are those servants. (Luke 12:38), with Matt. 14:25²⁵And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea. (Matthew 14:25). Mar. 13:35.

FREQUENTLY

Exceeding dark. Prov. 7:9⁹In the twilight, in the evening, in the black and dark night: (Proverbs 7:9).

Cold and frosty. Gen. 31:40⁴⁰Thus I was; in the day the drought consumed me, and the frost by night; and my sleep departed from mine eyes. (Genesis 31:40). Jer. 36:30³⁰Therefore thus saith the Lord of Jehoiakim king of Judah; He shall have none to sit upon the throne of David: and his dead body shall be cast out in the day to the heat, and in the night to the frost. (Jeremiah 36:30).

Accompanied by heavy dews. Num. 11:9⁹And when the dew fell upon the camp in the night, the manna fell upon it. (Numbers 11:9). Judg. 6:38, 40³⁸And it was so: for he rose up early on the morrow, and thrust the fleece together, and wringed the dew out of the fleece, a bowl full of water. (Judges 6:38)
⁴⁰And God did so that night: for it was dry upon the fleece only, and there was dew on all the ground. (Judges 6:40). Job 29:19¹⁹My root was spread out by the waters, and the dew lay all night upon my branch. (Job 29:19). SoS. 5:2.

Unsuitable for labor. John 9:4⁴I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work. (John 9:4).

Unsuitable for traveling. John 11:10¹⁰But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him. (John 11:10).

Designed for rest. Psa. 104:23²³Man goeth forth unto his work and to his labor until the evening. (Psalm 104:23).

Wearisome to the afflicted. Job 7:3, 4³So am I made to possess months of vanity, and wearisome nights are appointed to me. ⁴When I lie down, I say, When shall I arise, and the night be gone? and I am full of tossings to and fro unto the dawning of the day. (Job 7:3‑4).

Favorable to the purposes of the wicked. Gen. 31:39³⁹That which was torn of beasts I brought not unto thee; I bare the loss of it; of my hand didst thou require it, whether stolen by day, or stolen by night. (Genesis 31:39). Job 24:14, 15¹⁴The murderer rising with the light killeth the poor and needy, and in the night is as a thief. ¹⁵The eye also of the adulterer waiteth for the twilight, saying, No eye shall see me: and disguiseth his face. (Job 24:14‑15). Oba. 5 v. 1 Thess. 5:2²For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night. (1 Thessalonians 5:2).

Wild beasts go forth in search of prey during. 2 Sam. 21:10¹⁰And Rizpah the daughter of Aiah took sackcloth, and spread it for her upon the rock, from the beginning of harvest until water dropped upon them out of heaven, and suffered neither the birds of the air to rest on them by day, nor the beasts of the field by night. (2 Samuel 21:10). Psa. 104:21, 22²¹The young lions roar after their prey, and seek their meat from God. ²²The sun ariseth, they gather themselves together, and lay them down in their dens. (Psalm 104:21‑22).

THE JEWS

Forbidden to keep the wages of servants during. Lev. 19:13¹³Thou shalt not defraud thy neighbor, neither rob him: the wages of him that is hired shall not abide with thee all night until the morning. (Leviticus 19:13).

Forbidden to allow malefactors to hang during. Deut. 21:23²³His body shall not remain all night upon the tree, but thou shalt in any wise bury him that day; (for he that is hanged is accursed of God;) that thy land be not defiled, which the Lord thy God giveth thee for an inheritance. (Deuteronomy 21:23).

In affliction spent, in sorrow and humiliation. Psa. 6:6⁶I am weary with my groaning; all the night make I my bed to swim; I water my couch with my tears. (Psalm 6:6). Psa. 30:5⁵For his anger endureth but a moment; in his favor is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning. (Psalm 30:5). Joel 1:13¹³Gird yourselves, and lament, ye priests: howl, ye ministers of the altar: come, lie all night in sackcloth, ye ministers of my God: for the meat offering and the drink offering is withholden from the house of your God. (Joel 1:13).

In affliction spent, in prayer. Psa. 22:2²O my God, I cry in the daytime, but thou hearest not; and in the night season, and am not silent. (Psalm 22:2).

Often kept lamps burning during. Prov. 31:18¹⁸She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out by night. (Proverbs 31:18).

Eastern shepherds watched over their flocks during. Gen. 31:40⁴⁰Thus I was; in the day the drought consumed me, and the frost by night; and my sleep departed from mine eyes. (Genesis 31:40). Luke 2:8⁸And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. (Luke 2:8).

Eastern fishermen continued their employment during. Luke 5:5⁵And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net. (Luke 5:5). John 21:3³Simon Peter saith unto them, I go a fishing. They say unto him, We also go with thee. They went forth, and entered into a ship immediately; and that night they caught nothing. (John 21:3).

GOD FREQUENTLY

Revealed His will in. Gen. 31:24²⁴And God came to Laban the Syrian in a dream by night, and said unto him, Take heed that thou speak not to Jacob either good or bad. (Genesis 31:24). Gen. 46:2²And God spake unto Israel in the visions of the night, and said, Jacob, Jacob. And he said, Here am I. (Genesis 46:2). Num. 22:20²⁰And God came unto Balaam at night, and said unto him, If the men come to call thee, rise up, and go with them; but yet the word which I shall say unto thee, that shalt thou do. (Numbers 22:20). Dan. 7:2²Daniel spake and said, I saw in my vision by night, and, behold, the four winds of the heaven strove upon the great sea. (Daniel 7:2).

Visited His people in. 1 Kin. 3:5. Psa. 17:3³Thou hast proved mine heart; thou hast visited me in the night; thou hast tried me, and shalt find nothing; I am purposed that my mouth shall not transgress. (Psalm 17:3).

Executed His Judgments in. Ex. 12:12¹²For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the Lord. (Exodus 12:12). 2 Kin. 19:35. Job 27:20²⁰Terrors take hold on him as waters, a tempest stealeth him away in the night. (Job 27:20). Dan. 5:30³⁰In that night was Belshazzar the king of the Chaldeans slain. (Daniel 5:30).

ILLUSTRATIVE OF

Spiritual darkness. Rom. 13:12¹²The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light. (Romans 13:12).

Seasons of severe calamities. Isa. 21:12¹²The watchman said, The morning cometh, and also the night: if ye will inquire, inquire ye: return, come. (Isaiah 21:12). Amos 5:8⁸Seek him that maketh the seven stars and Orion, and turneth the shadow of death into the morning, and maketh the day dark with night: that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth: The Lord is his name: (Amos 5:8).

Seasons of spiritual desertion. SoS. 3:1.

Death. John 9:4⁴I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work. (John 9:4)
