TWO INDIANS were beside the dying embers of a fire. One was a chief, the other a warrior. After a time of silence the warrior said to the chief, “I have been thinking of some beautiful words spoken by the Man whom the white men call Jesus.”

“Let me hear them,” said the chief. “As ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.” Luke 6:31³¹And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise. (Luke 6:31).

“Impossible,” returned the chief. Rising from beside the fire, he began to pace to and fro. Then he said, “There is one way, and only one, in which that rule could be kept. If the Great Spirit who made man were to give him a new heart, then it might be done.”

The chief did not know then that this is just what God has done through Christ Jesus, for all who have faith to trust Him as their Saviour. They are “born again” — born of His Spirit (John 3:3, 6³Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. (John 3:3)
⁶That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. (John 3:6)); they have a new life — eternal life (John 3:16¹⁶For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. (John 3:16)); they have a new nature, for they are made “partakers of the divine nature” (2 Pet. 1:4⁴Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. (2 Peter 1:4)); and they have a new Object—Christ Himself in glory, who is coming for them (Tit. 2:13¹³Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; (Titus 2:13)).
