3 John 5‑7
“Beloved, thou doest faithfully whatsoever thou doest to the brethren, and to strangers; which have borne witness of thy charity before the church: whom if thou bring forward on their journey after a godly sort, thou shalt do well: because that for His name’s sake they went forth, taking nothing of the Gentiles” ―3 John 5-75Beloved, thou doest faithfully whatsoever thou doest to the brethren, and to strangers; 6Which have borne witness of thy charity before the church: whom if thou bring forward on their journey after a godly sort, thou shalt do well: 7Because that for his name's sake they went forth, taking nothing of the Gentiles. (3 John 5‑7).
JOHN’S third Epistle is addressed to one known as Gaius, host to visiting brethren on numerous occasions, and evidently at times to John himself. There is now no way of knowing whether he was identical with “Gaius mine host” of whom Paul writes in Romans 16:23,23Gaius mine host, and of the whole church, saluteth you. Erastus the chamberlain of the city saluteth you, and Quartus a brother. (Romans 16:23) or whether this is the same as the Gaius whom he baptized at Corinth (1 Cor. 1:1414I thank God that I baptized none of you, but Crispus and Gaius; (1 Corinthians 1:14)). Gaius, answering to the Roman Caius, was a very common name in apostolic times.
By assisting these traveling servants of Christ, Gaius earned the commendation of the apostle, who was thus speaking for his Lord. Similar conduct today will have the Lord’s approval, we may be sure. He counts all done to His servants as done to Himself (Matt. 25:4040And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. (Matthew 25:40)). This principle abides in all dispensations.
“‘For My sake’ press thou still with patience onward.
Although the race be hard, the battle long;
Within My Father’s house are many mansions,
There thou shalt rest, and join the victor’s song.
And if in coming days the world revile thee,
If ‘for My sake’ thou suffer pain and loss,
Bear on, faint heart, thy Master went before thee;
They only wear His crown who share His cross.”
