Padecer “con” Cristo (Romanos 8:17) es un aspecto de sufrimiento que viene como consecuencia directa de tener “el Espíritu de Cristo” (Romanos 8:9). Esta función especial del Espíritu forma a Cristo en nosotros. Y una de las características de Cristo que Él está formando en nosotros son los sentimientos de Cristo. Cuando Cristo contempla la escena donde el pecado ha obrado, Él padece compasivamente por el padecimiento que tienen Sus criaturas bajo “servidumbre de corrupción” (Romanos 8:20-22). Como hijos de Dios y linaje de Dios, hemos sido hechos recipientes de las compasiones de Dios. Por lo tanto, estando enlazados por el cuerpo a la creación gimiente y teniendo el Espíritu de Cristo en nosotros, sufrimos compasivamente con Cristo en una pequeña medida. Cada creyente padece en cierta medida de esta manera porque tiene el Espíritu morando en él.
Padecer “por” Cristo (Filipenses 1:29; Hechos 5:41, 9:16, etcétera), por el contrario, tiene que ver con sufrir reproche y persecución por el testimonio del evangelio que está siendo anunciado en este mundo. Podemos evitar este tipo de padecimiento negándonos a confesar a Cristo ante los hombres. Hay un tipo de esta clase de padecimiento en la historia de David y Jonatán. David es un tipo de Cristo y Jonatán es un tipo del creyente. Cuando Jonatán se identificó públicamente con David, Saúl y los que le seguían se enfurecieron. Saúl incluso lanzó una lanza a Jonatán—¡su propio hijo! (1 Samuel 20:30-34; 230Then Saul's anger was kindled against Jonathan, and he said unto him, Thou son of the perverse rebellious woman, do not I know that thou hast chosen the son of Jesse to thine own confusion, and unto the confusion of thy mother's nakedness? 31For as long as the son of Jesse liveth upon the ground, thou shalt not be established, nor thy kingdom. Wherefore now send and fetch him unto me, for he shall surely die. 32And Jonathan answered Saul his father, and said unto him, Wherefore shall he be slain? what hath he done? 33And Saul cast a javelin at him to smite him: whereby Jonathan knew that it was determined of his father to slay David. 34So Jonathan arose from the table in fierce anger, and did eat no meat the second day of the month: for he was grieved for David, because his father had done him shame. 30Wherefore the Lord God of Israel saith, I said indeed that thy house, and the house of thy father, should walk before me for ever: but now the Lord saith, Be it far from me; for them that honor me I will honor, and they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed. 31Behold, the days come, that I will cut off thine arm, and the arm of thy father's house, that there shall not be an old man in thine house. 32And thou shalt see an enemy in my habitation, in all the wealth which God shall give Israel: and there shall not be an old man in thine house for ever. 33And the man of thine, whom I shall not cut off from mine altar, shall be to consume thine eyes, and to grieve thine heart: and all the increase of thine house shall die in the flower of their age. 34And this shall be a sign unto thee, that shall come upon thy two sons, on Hophni and Phinehas; in one day they shall die both of them.
