Jerusalem celebrated for. Psa. 48:3, 13³God is known in her palaces for a refuge. (Psalm 48:3)
¹³Mark ye well her bulwarks, consider her palaces; that ye may tell it to the generation following. (Psalm 48:13).

THE TERM APPLIED TO

Residences of kings. Dan. 4:4⁴I Nebuchadnezzar was at rest in mine house, and flourishing in my palace: (Daniel 4:4). Dan. 6:18¹⁸Then the king went to his palace, and passed the night fasting: neither were instruments of music brought before him: and his sleep went from him. (Daniel 6:18).

Houses of great men. Amos 3:9⁹Publish in the palaces at Ashdod, and in the palaces in the land of Egypt, and say, Assemble yourselves upon the mountains of Samaria, and behold the great tumults in the midst thereof, and the oppressed in the midst thereof. (Amos 3:9). Mic. 5:5⁵And this man shall be the peace, when the Assyrian shall come into our land: and when he shall tread in our palaces, then shall we raise against him seven shepherds, and eight principal men. (Micah 5:5).

The temple of God. 1 Chron. 29:1, 19¹Furthermore David the king said unto all the congregation, Solomon my son, whom alone God hath chosen, is yet young and tender, and the work is great: for the palace is not for man, but for the Lord God. (1 Chronicles 29:1)
¹⁹And give unto Solomon my son a perfect heart, to keep thy commandments, thy testimonies, and thy statutes, and to do all these things, and to build the palace, for the which I have made provision. (1 Chronicles 29:19).

The house of the high priest. Matt. 26:58⁵⁸But Peter followed him afar off unto the high priest's palace, and went in, and sat with the servants, to see the end. (Matthew 26:58).

DESCRIBED AS

High. Psa. 78:69⁶⁹And he built his sanctuary like high palaces, like the earth which he hath established for ever. (Psalm 78:69).

Polished. Psa. 144.12.

Pleasant. Isa. 13:22²²And the wild beasts of the islands shall cry in their desolate houses, and dragons in their pleasant palaces: and her time is near to come, and her days shall not be prolonged. (Isaiah 13:22).

OF KINGS

Called the house of the kingdom. 2 Chr. 2:1, 12¹And Solomon determined to build an house for the name of the Lord, and an house for his kingdom. (2 Chronicles 2:1)
¹²Huram said moreover, Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, that made heaven and earth, who hath given to David the king a wise son, endued with prudence and understanding, that might build an house for the Lord, and an house for his kingdom. (2 Chronicles 2:12).

Called the king's palace. Esther 1:5⁵And when these days were expired, the king made a feast unto all the people that were present in Shushan the palace, both unto great and small, seven days, in the court of the garden of the king's palace; (Esther 1:5).

Called the royal house. Est. 1:9.

Splendidly furnished. Esther 1:6⁶Where were white, green, and blue, hangings, fastened with cords of fine linen and purple to silver rings and pillars of marble: the beds were of gold and silver, upon a pavement of red, and blue, and white, and black, marble. (Esther 1:6).

Surrounded with gardens. Esther 1:5⁵And when these days were expired, the king made a feast unto all the people that were present in Shushan the palace, both unto great and small, seven days, in the court of the garden of the king's palace; (Esther 1:5).

Surrounded with terraces. 2 Chr. 9:11¹¹And the king made of the algum trees terraces to the house of the Lord, and to the king's palace, and harps and psalteries for singers: and there were none such seen before in the land of Judah. (2 Chronicles 9:11).

Under governors. 1 Kin. 4:6. Neh. 7:2²That I gave my brother Hanani, and Hananiah the ruler of the palace, charge over Jerusalem: for he was a faithful man, and feared God above many. (Nehemiah 7:2).

Often attended by eunuchs as servants. 2 Kin. 20:18. Dan. 1:3, 4³And the king spake unto Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring certain of the children of Israel, and of the king's seed, and of the princes; ⁴Children in whom was no blemish, but well favored, and skilful in all wisdom, and cunning in knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability in them to stand in the king's palace, and whom they might teach the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans. (Daniel 1:3‑4).

Were strictly guarded. 2 Kin. 11:5.

Afforded support to all the King's retainers. Ezra 4:14¹⁴Now because we have maintenance from the king's palace, and it was not meet for us to see the king's dishonor, therefore have we sent and certified the king; (Ezra 4:14). Dan. 1:5⁵And the king appointed them a daily provision of the king's meat, and of the wine which he drank: so nourishing them three years, that at the end thereof they might stand before the king. (Daniel 1:5).

Royal decrees issued from. Esther 3:15¹⁵The posts went out, being hastened by the king's commandment, and the decree was given in Shushan the palace. And the king and Haman sat down to drink; but the city Shushan was perplexed. (Esther 3:15). Esther 8:14¹⁴So the posts that rode upon mules and camels went out, being hastened and pressed on by the king's commandment. And the decree was given at Shushan the palace. (Esther 8:14).

Royal decrees laid up in. Ezra 6:2²And there was found at Achmetha, in the palace that is in the province of the Medes, a roll, and therein was a record thus written: (Ezra 6:2).

Contained treasures of the king. 1 Kin. 15:18. 2 Chr. 12:9⁹So Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem, and took away the treasures of the house of the Lord, and the treasures of the king's house; he took all: he carried away also the shields of gold which Solomon had made. (2 Chronicles 12:9). 2 Chr. 25:24²⁴And he took all the gold and the silver, and all the vessels that were found in the house of God with Obed-edom, and the treasures of the king's house, the hostages also, and returned to Samaria. (2 Chronicles 25:24).

Gorgeous apparel suited to, alone. Luke 7:25²⁵But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they which are gorgeously apparelled, and live delicately, are in kings' courts. (Luke 7:25).

Were entered by gates. Neh. 2:8⁸And a letter unto Asaph the keeper of the king's forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the palace which appertained to the house, and for the wall of the city, and for the house that I shall enter into. And the king granted me, according to the good hand of my God upon me. (Nehemiah 2:8).

Often the storehouses of rapine. Amos 3:10¹⁰For they know not to do right, saith the Lord, who store up violence and robbery in their palaces. (Amos 3:10).

OFTEN AS A PUNISHMENT

Spoiled. Amos 3:11¹¹Therefore thus saith the Lord God; An adversary there shall be even round about the land; and he shall bring down thy strength from thee, and thy palaces shall be spoiled. (Amos 3:11).

Forsaken. Isa. 32:14¹⁴Because the palaces shall be forsaken; the multitude of the city shall be left; the forts and towers shall be for dens for ever, a joy of wild asses, a pasture of flocks; (Isaiah 32:14).

Desolate. Psa. 69:25²⁵Let their habitation be desolate; and let none dwell in their tents. (Psalm 69:25). (marg.) Ezek. 19:7⁷And he knew their desolate palaces, and he laid waste their cities; and the land was desolate, and the fulness thereof, by the noise of his roaring. (Ezekiel 19:7).

Scenes of bloodshed. Jer. 9:21²¹For death is come up into our windows, and is entered into our palaces, to cut off the children from without, and the young men from the streets. (Jeremiah 9:21).

Burned with fire. 2 Chr. 36:19¹⁹And they burnt the house of God, and brake down the wall of Jerusalem, and burnt all the palaces thereof with fire, and destroyed all the goodly vessels thereof. (2 Chronicles 36:19). Jer. 17:27²⁷But if ye will not hearken unto me to hallow the sabbath day, and not to bear a burden, even entering in at the gates of Jerusalem on the sabbath day; then will I kindle a fire in the gates thereof, and it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem, and it shall not be quenched. (Jeremiah 17:27).

Overgrown with thorns, &c. Isa. 34:13¹³And thorns shall come up in her palaces, nettles and brambles in the fortresses thereof: and it shall be an habitation of dragons, and a court for owls. (Isaiah 34:13).

The habitation of dragons, &c. Isa. 13:22²²And the wild beasts of the islands shall cry in their desolate houses, and dragons in their pleasant palaces: and her time is near to come, and her days shall not be prolonged. (Isaiah 13:22).

The spider makes its way even into. Prov. 30:28²⁸The spider taketh hold with her hands, and is in kings' palaces. (Proverbs 30:28).

ILLUSTRATIVE OF

The splendor of the church. SoS. 8:9.

The godly children of saints. Psa. 144:12¹²That our sons may be as plants grown up in their youth; that our daughters may be as corner stones, polished after the similitude of a palace: (Psalm 144:12).

The place of Satan's dominion. Luke 11:21²¹When a strong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace: (Luke 11:21).
