First mention of, in Scripture. Ex. 15:27²⁷And they came to Elim, where were twelve wells of water, and threescore and ten palm trees: and they encamped there by the waters. (Exodus 15:27).

Jericho celebrated for. Deut. 34:3³And the south, and the plain of the valley of Jericho, the city of palm trees, unto Zoar. (Deuteronomy 34:3). Judg. 1:6⁶But Adoni-bezek fled; and they pursued after him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes. (Judges 1:6).

DESCRIBED AS

Tall. SoS. 7:7.

Upright. Jer. 10:5⁵They are upright as the palm tree, but speak not: they must needs be borne, because they cannot go. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither also is it in them to do good. (Jeremiah 10:5).

Flourishing. Psa. 92:12¹²The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree: he shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon. (Psalm 92:12).

Fruitful to a great age. Psa. 92:14¹⁴They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing; (Psalm 92:14).

The fruit of, called dates. 2 Chr. 31:5⁵And as soon as the commandment came abroad, the children of Israel brought in abundance the firstfruits of corn, wine, and oil, and honey, and of all the increase of the field; and the tithe of all things brought they in abundantly. Requires a moist and fertile soil. Ex. 15:27²⁷And they came to Elim, where were twelve wells of water, and threescore and ten palm trees: and they encamped there by the waters. (Exodus 15:27).

Tents often pitched under the shade of. Judg. 4:5⁵And she dwelt under the palm tree of Deborah between Ramah and Beth-el in mount Ephraim: and the children of Israel came up to her for judgment. (Judges 4:5).

THE BRANCHES OF, WERE

The emblem of victory. Rev. 7:9⁹After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands; (Revelation 7:9).

Carried at feast of tabernacles. Lev. 23:40⁴⁰And ye shall take you on the first day the boughs of goodly trees, branches of palm trees, and the boughs of thick trees, and willows of the brook; and ye shall rejoice before the Lord your God seven days. (Leviticus 23:40).

Used for constructing booths. Neh. 8:15¹⁵And that they should publish and proclaim in all their cities, and in Jerusalem, saying, Go forth unto the mount, and fetch olive branches, and pine branches, and myrtle branches, and palm branches, and branches of thick trees, to make booths, as it is written. (Nehemiah 8:15).

Spread before Christ. John 12:13¹³Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord. (John 12:13).

Blasted as a punishment. Joel 1:12¹²The vine is dried up, and the fig tree languisheth; the pomegranate tree, the palm tree also, and the apple tree, even all the trees of the field, are withered: because joy is withered away from the sons of men. (Joel 1:12).

Represented in carved work on the walls and doors of the temple of Solomon. 1 Kin. 6:29, 32, 35.

2 Chr. 3:5⁵And the greater house he cieled with fir tree, which he overlaid with fine gold, and set thereon palm trees and chains. (2 Chronicles 3:5).
