Peaceful Night!
Gemmed with thy stars, whose loveliness is given
As watchfires radiant on the road to Heaven,
‘Mid spheres of light.
Lovely night!
From whose soft garments falls the trembling shade,
Half dark, half light, in shapes of beauty made
And rich delight.
I watched the sheen of silver bars,
I heard the song of glorious stars:
And hymns of praise, and choral song
Swept all the universe along.
From height to height the music sped,
From radiant hosts, divinely led:
To my rapt soul the bliss was given,
Of listening at the Gate of Heaven.
All grosser passions passed away
Refining elements of clay,
And the hushed earth in sweet delight
Thrilled with the music of the night.
