And the twelve gates were twelve pearls; every several gate was of one pearl: and the street of the city was pure gold, as it were transparent glass.
It is significant that the gates are of pearl. The pearl is the only adornment that is perfect just as it is found. Gold and silver must be refined and shaped; gems must be cut and polished. You and I will never be more fit to enter the presence of the Lord than we were the day we were saved. There is nothing that man can add to improve on salvation! Most who wear pearls enjoy their beauty but don’t remember that the pearl is the fruit of suffering in the oyster. Let us not forget the suffering of our Lord who opened the gate of salvation for us.
