ANSWER: I believe it extends to the new heavens and the new earth, wherein dwells righteousness, as does John 1:2929The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world. (John 1:29), "The Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world." The work that accomplishes it is done, but the power is not yet put forth. "He is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world" (1 John 2:22And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. (1 John 2:2)). That is, atonement has been made, and the blood is on the merry-scat, so that all hindrance is removed.
En Hebrews 9:26, 2826For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. (Hebrews 9:26)
28So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation. (Hebrews 9:28)
we get two things, putting away sin and sins borne, just as we get the sin offering and the scapegoat on the day of atonement. The blood of the sin offering was first sprinkled on and before the mercy-seat, then the sins of Israel were confessed over the head of the scapegoat (Lev. 16). The blood on the mercy-seat now is the ground of invitation to the sinner.
I say now to the sinner: Christ has died, and the blood is on the mercy-seat, and you will be received if you come. If you accept the invitation, I can tell you more. Not only has the Lord Jesus put away sin, but He has borne all your sins and confessed them as if they were His own, and they are all gone.
