R.V. marg. “autumn crocus.” Only mentioned twice. As the word is derived from a root meaning “a bulb,” it is no doubt a bulbous plant, of which there are many kinds in Palestine, as the lily, the crocus, the narcissus, any of which may be the plant referred to. No true roses are found, except on the Lebanons.

Rot. Num. 5:21²¹Then the priest shall charge the woman with an oath of cursing, and the priest shall say unto the woman, The Lord make thee a curse and an oath among thy people, when the Lord doth make thy thigh to rot, and thy belly to swell; (Numbers 5:21); Prov. 10:7⁷The memory of the just is blessed: but the name of the wicked shall rot. Rottenness. Prov. 12:4; 14:30⁴A virtuous woman is a crown to her husband: but she that maketh ashamed is as rottenness in his bones. (Proverbs 12:4)
³⁰A sound heart is the life of the flesh: but envy the rottenness of the bones. (Proverbs 14:30); Isa. 5:24²⁴Therefore as the fire devoureth the stubble, and the flame consumeth the chaff, so their root shall be as rottenness, and their blossom shall go up as dust: because they have cast away the law of the Lord of hosts, and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.
