Redemption.

Defined. 1 Cor. 6:20²⁰For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's. (1 Corinthians 6:20). 1 Cor. 7:23²³Ye are bought with a price; be not ye the servants of men. (1 Corinthians 7:23).

Is of God. Isa. 44:21-23²¹Remember these, O Jacob and Israel; for thou art my servant: I have formed thee; thou art my servant: O Israel, thou shalt not be forgotten of me. ²²I have blotted out, as a thick cloud, thy transgressions, and, as a cloud, thy sins: return unto me; for I have redeemed thee. ²³Sing, O ye heavens; for the Lord hath done it: shout, ye lower parts of the earth: break forth into singing, ye mountains, O forest, and every tree therein: for the Lord hath redeemed Jacob, and glorified himself in Israel. (Isaiah 44:21‑23). Isa. 43:1¹But now thus saith the Lord that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine. (Isaiah 43:1), with Luke 1:68⁶⁸Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people, (Luke 1:68).

Is by Christ. Matt. 20:28²⁸Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many. (Matthew 20:28). Gal. 3:13¹³Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: (Galatians 3:13).

Is by the blood of Christ. Acts 29:28. Heb. 9:12¹²Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us. (Hebrews 9:12). 1 Peter 1:19¹⁹But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: (1 Peter 1:19). Rev. 5:9⁹And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation; (Revelation 5:9).

Christ sent to effect. Gal. 4:4, 5⁴But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, ⁵To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. (Galatians 4:4‑5).

Christ is made, unto us. 1 Cor. 1:30³⁰But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption: (1 Corinthians 1:30).

IS FROM

The bondage of the law. Gal. 4:5⁵To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. (Galatians 4:5).

The curse of the law. Gal. 3:13¹³Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: (Galatians 3:13).

The power of sin. Rom. 6:18, 22¹⁸Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness. (Romans 6:18)
²²But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. (Romans 6:22).

The power of the grave. Psa. 49:15¹⁵But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave: for he shall receive me. Selah. (Psalm 49:15).

All troubles. Psa. 25:22²²Redeem Israel, O God, out of all his troubles. (Psalm 25:22).

All iniquity. Psa. 130:8⁸And he shall redeem Israel from all his iniquities. (Psalm 130:8). Titus 2:14¹⁴Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. (Titus 2:14).

All evil. Gen. 48:16¹⁶The Angel which redeemed me from all evil, bless the lads; and let my name be named on them, and the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac; and let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth. (Genesis 48:16).

This present evil world. Gal. 1:4⁴Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father: (Galatians 1:4).

Vain conversation. 1 Peter 1:18¹⁸Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; (1 Peter 1:18).

Enemies. Psa. 106:10, 11¹⁰And he saved them from the hand of him that hated them, and redeemed them from the hand of the enemy. ¹¹And the waters covered their enemies: there was not one of them left. (Psalm 106:10‑11). Jer. 15:21²¹And I will deliver thee out of the hand of the wicked, and I will redeem thee out of the hand of the terrible. (Jeremiah 15:21).

Death. Hos. 13:14¹⁴I will ransom them from the power of the grave; I will redeem them from death: O death, I will be thy plagues; O grave, I will be thy destruction: repentance shall be hid from mine eyes. (Hosea 13:14).

Destruction. Psa. 103:4⁴Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies; (Psalm 103:4).

Man cannot effect. Psa. 49:7⁷None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him: (Psalm 49:7).

Corruptible things cannot purchase. 1 Peter 1:18¹⁸Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; (1 Peter 1:18).

PROCURES FOR US

Justification. 3:24.

Forgiveness of sin. Eph. 1:7⁷In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace; (Ephesians 1:7). Col. 1:14¹⁴In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: (Colossians 1:14).

Adoption. Gal. 4:4, 5⁴But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, ⁵To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. (Galatians 4:4‑5).

Purification. Titus 2:14¹⁴Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. (Titus 2:14).

The present life, the only season for. Job 36:18, 19¹⁸Because there is wrath, beware lest he take thee away with his stroke: then a great ransom cannot deliver thee. ¹⁹Will he esteem thy riches? no, not gold, nor all the forces of strength. (Job 36:18‑19).

Precious. Psa. 49:8⁸(For the redemption of their soul is precious, and it ceaseth for ever:) (Psalm 49:8).

Plenteous. Psa. 130:7⁷Let Israel hope in the Lord: for with the Lord there is mercy, and with him is plenteous redemption. (Psalm 130:7).

Eternal. Heb. 9:12¹²Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us. (Hebrews 9:12).

SUBJECTS OF,

The soul. Psa. 49:15¹⁵But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave: for he shall receive me. Selah. (Psalm 49:15).

The body. Rom. 8:23²³And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body. (Romans 8:23).

The life. Psa. 103:4⁴Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies; (Psalm 103:4). Lam. 3:58⁵⁸O Lord, thou hast pleaded the causes of my soul; thou hast redeemed my life. (Lamentations 3:58).

The inheritance. Eph. 1:14¹⁴Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory. (Ephesians 1:14).

MANIFESTS THE

Power of God. Isa. 50:2²Wherefore, when I came, was there no man? when I called, was there none to answer? Is my hand shortened at all, that it cannot redeem? or have I no power to deliver? behold, at my rebuke I dry up the sea, I make the rivers a wilderness: their fish stinketh, because there is no water, and dieth for thirst. (Isaiah 50:2).

Grace of God. Isa. 52:3³For thus saith the Lord, Ye have sold yourselves for nought; and ye shall be redeemed without money. (Isaiah 52:3).

Love and pity of God. Isa. 63:9⁹In all their affliction he was afflicted, and the angel of his presence saved them: in his love and in his pity he redeemed them; and he bare them, and carried them all the days of old. (Isaiah 63:9). John 3:16¹⁶For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. (John 3:16). Rom. 6:8⁸Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him: (Romans 6:8). 1 John. 4:10.

A subject for praise. Isa. 44:22, 23²²I have blotted out, as a thick cloud, thy transgressions, and, as a cloud, thy sins: return unto me; for I have redeemed thee. ²³Sing, O ye heavens; for the Lord hath done it: shout, ye lower parts of the earth: break forth into singing, ye mountains, O forest, and every tree therein: for the Lord hath redeemed Jacob, and glorified himself in Israel. (Isaiah 44:22‑23). Isa. 51:11¹¹Therefore the redeemed of the Lord shall return, and come with singing unto Zion; and everlasting joy shall be upon their head: they shall obtain gladness and joy; and sorrow and mourning shall flee away. (Isaiah 51:11).

Old Testament saints partakers of. Heb. 9:15¹⁵And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance. (Hebrews 9:15).

Are the property of God. Isa. 43:1¹But now thus saith the Lord that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine. Are a peculiar people. 2 Sam. 7:23²³And what one nation in the earth is like thy people, even like Israel, whom God went to redeem for a people to himself, and to make him a name, and to do for you great things and terrible, for thy land, before thy people, which thou redeemedst to thee from Egypt, from the nations and their gods? (2 Samuel 7:23). Titus 2:14¹⁴Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. (Titus 2:14), with 1 Peter 2:9⁹But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should show forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: (1 Peter 2:9).

Are assured of. Job 19:25²⁵For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth: (Job 19:25). Psa. 31:5⁵Into thine hand I commit my spirit: thou hast redeemed me, O Lord God of truth. (Psalm 31:5).

Are sealed unto the day of. Eph. 4:30³⁰And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. (Ephesians 4:30).

Are Zealous of good works. Eph. 2:10¹⁰For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. (Ephesians 2:10). Titus 2:14¹⁴Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. (Titus 2:14). 1 Peter 2:9⁹But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should show forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: (1 Peter 2:9).

Walk safely in holiness. Isa. 35:8, 9⁸And an highway shall be there, and a way, and it shall be called The way of holiness; the unclean shall not pass over it; but it shall be for those: the wayfaring men, though fools, shall not err therein. ⁹No lion shall be there, nor any ravenous beast shall go up thereon, it shall not be found there; but the redeemed shall walk there: (Isaiah 35:8‑9).

Shall return to Zion with joy. Isa. 35:10¹⁰And the ransomed of the Lord shall return, and come to Zion with songs and everlasting joy upon their heads: they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away. (Isaiah 35:10).

Alone can learn the songs of heaven. Rev. 14:3, 4³And they sung as it were a new song before the throne, and before the four beasts, and the elders: and no man could learn that song but the hundred and forty and four thousand, which were redeemed from the earth. ⁴These are they which were not defiled with women; for they are virgins. These are they which follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth. These were redeemed from among men, being the firstfruits unto God and to the Lamb. (Revelation 14:3‑4).

Commit themselves to God. Psa. 31:5⁵Into thine hand I commit my spirit: thou hast redeemed me, O Lord God of truth. (Psalm 31:5).

Have an earnest of the completion of. Eph. 1:14¹⁴Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory. (Ephesians 1:14), with 2 Cor. 1:22²²Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts. (2 Corinthians 1:22).

Wait for the completion of. Rom. 8:23²³And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body. (Romans 8:23). Phi. 3:20, 21. Tit. 2:11-13¹¹For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, ¹²Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; ¹³Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; (Titus 2:11‑13).

Pray for the completion of. Psa. 26:11¹¹But as for me, I will walk in mine integrity: redeem me, and be merciful unto me. (Psalm 26:11). Psa. 44:26²⁶Arise for our help, and redeem us for thy mercies' sake. (Psalm 44:26).

Praise God for. Psa. 71:23²³My lips shall greatly rejoice when I sing unto thee; and my soul, which thou hast redeemed. (Psalm 71:23). Psa. 103:4⁴Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies; (Psalm 103:4). Israel, Ex. 6:6⁶Wherefore say unto the children of Israel, I am the Lord, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will rid you out of their bondage, and I will redeem you with a stretched out arm, and with great judgments: (Exodus 6:6).
