Bob and Shirley decided to go for a car ride one day after Bob had been kept in the house with a cold for a while. With their two children, they set out on a drive to the mountains. It was nice to get out of the house, but later in the afternoon, it started to rain as they drove up the twisting mountain road.
“Maybe we ought to head for home,” Bob said, and he began to look for a place where he could turn the car around. But he couldn’t find a place to turn around on the narrow road which had been blasted out of the mountain, so he kept driving.
Soon they came to the end of the pavement. Here the road turned to clay, which was now very slippery because of the rain. When they finally slid down a hill to a place where Bob could turn the car around, he found he couldn’t steer the car on the wet clay. Soon, they were in the ditch. As Bob tried to drive the car out, the spinning tires only made them sink further into the mud.
Bob and Shirley got out to collect branches to fill in the ruts and give the car some traction, but it was no use. They tried pushing, but that didn’t help either. They were only getting muddier and wetter by the minute.
Not only was it raining steadily, but it was beginning to get dark and cold. Bob felt so sick he could hardly stand up. He began to worry about what they would do for the night if they couldn’t get out. Finally, he said, “Let’s get back in the car and cry to the Lord. It’s all we can do.”
The children calmed down at once when Bob and Shirley got back in, and they all prayed that the Lord would help them out of their trouble. They had just finished praying when they saw two 4-wheel-drive trucks driving toward them. Across the front of each in large letters was the word “RESCUE.” It seemed as though the Lord Jesus had just been waiting for them to ask for His help so He could send them the help they needed. Did you know that God wants us to trust in the Lord Jesus not only for salvation from our sins, but also to depend on Him to take care of us every moment of our lives, to rescue us when we are in trouble?
The first truck hitched a big chain onto their back bumper, and the other hitched its chain onto the front to steady the car. Together they pulled them backwards up the hill. Bob tried to steer but the car kept slipping sideways into the ditch. Each time it was pulled out, the car was more scratched up. By the time they got to the top of the hill, their car was a big mess.
But they were safe, and how they thanked God for their rescue! Bob thought of the verses in Psalm 40:2-3,2He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings. 3And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the Lord. (Psalm 40:2‑3) “He brought me up also out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings. And He [has] put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God.” Isn’t it wonderful that even our hard times can turn into a place where we see the Lord work for us and give us another opportunity to praise Him?
